  • [01] YILMAZ VISITS UZBEKISTAN

    Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and the Turkish delegation accompanying him are continuing with their contacts in Uzbekistan. Following meetings between Yilmaz and Uzbek President Islam Kerimov and the Turkish and Uzbek delagations, a joint declaration was issued. Yilmaz and Kerimov signed four agreements for the training of border personnel, for the prevention of smuggling of historical and cultural assets, the protection of copyright, and for more cooperation in economy and trade. /Sabah/Milliyet_

    [02] TANER PARTICIPATES IN IMF MEETING

    State Minister Gunes Taner and a delegation accompanying him is going today to the United States where they will participate in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. In their contacts with IMF officials, a survey will be made on the latest results of Turkish economic policy. A spokesman from the Turkish delegation declared that a more detailed inspection will be made on April 27, when the IMF representatives will be in Ankara for an annual assessment. /Hurriyet/

    [03] KARADAYI IN AZERBAIJAN

    The Chief of General Staff Ismail Hakki Karadayi yesterday went to Azerbaijan. Responding to suggestions that his visit was unexpected and whether the Army had any concern over the provocative remarks targeting Azebaijan by Armenia's newly elected president Robert Kocarian, Karadayi said it was a "normal visit" to a friendly country and that matters of that kind were the business of politicians. He also answered a question on the security of the proposed Baku-Ceyhan pipeline saying that this problem should be solved through the ccoperation of all the parties involved. /Hurriyet/

    [04] ERSUMER RECEIVES US DELEGATION

    Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Cumhur Ersumer yesterday received a US delegation headed by Chairman of the Allocations Committee of the US House of Representatives, Bob Livingston. Following a briefing, during which information was given to the US delegation regarding Turkey's future energy demands, a press conference was held jointly by Undersecretary of Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry, Yurdakul Yigitguden, and Livingston. Furnishing information regarding the meeting, Yigitguden said that they had gathered to exchange views on proposed energy cooperation between Turkey and the US. /Milliyet/

    [05] AGRICULTURE MINISTER TOURING AMERICAN FARMS

    Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Mustafa Tasar is continuing his US visit aiming to have contacts with American officials on agricultural matters such as an agricultural products stock exchange, and cooperation between the two countries in agriculture and animal husbandry. At the beginning of his trip, Tasar visited several farms and organizations having enormous production capacities. Before participating in a meeting on "job opportunities in agriculture", he met with his American counterpart, Dan Clickman in Washington. He is scheduled to leave Washington today for New York where he will stay until his return on the 16th of April. /Hurriyet/

    [06] SYNDICATION CREDIT FOR DEMIRBANK

    Demirbank has received one-year term syndication credits worth $150 million under the leadership of the Bank of America and Bayerische Vereinsbank and with the participation of 26 international banks. Thus, Demirbank now has foreign credits worth $220 million including a previous credit facility worth $70 million, which it received in March. /Milliyet/

    [07] NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE DEVOTES WIDE COVERAGE TO ATATURK

    Itogi, published by the US Newsweek magazine in Russian, gave wide coverage to Ataturk, founder of the Turkish Republic, in its latest issue. The magazine promoted Ataturk's accomplishments under the title of "important figures of the century". It also noted that Ataturk established the "Turkish Republic" instead of an empire, by setting up a secular state and removing the Caliphate. /Milliyet/

    [08] INTEREST RATES FALL, STOCK EXCHANGE RISES

    The Turkish stock exchange reached 3,645 points yesterday with a daily transaction volume of TL 83.4 trillion. Meanwhile, interest rates fell two points on average. Developments stemming from new economic optimism, which continued during the nine-day holiday, positively affected the markets. /Sabah/

    [09] TWO PKK TERRORISTS SEIZED

    Two members of the PKK terrorist organization who left put a bomb in a park in Sultanahmet, Istanbul on 12 April and wounded nine civilians three of whom were tourists, have been seized by security forces. Questioned at the Department of the Struggle Against Terrorism, the PKK members confessed that they had been trained in PKK camps in Greece for three months and that they had come to Turkey just a day before the incident. /Sabah/Cumhuriyet_

    [10] SEMDIN SAKIK BROUGHT TO TURKEY

    Semdin Sakik, sheltered by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) after escaping from the PKK terrorist organization, has been arrested and brought to Turkey by a special team of the Office of the Chief of General Staff. Before the operation, Turkish Foreign Ministry and National Intelligence Agency (MIT) officials asked Mesut Barzani, leader of the KDP to hand Sakik over to Turkey. However, Barzani refused, claiming that it would put him into a difficult position opposite factions in the troubled region of northern Iraq. /Sabah/ Cumhuriyet/ Milliyet/

    [11] EARTHQUAKE IN SOUTHEAST ANATOLIA

    An earthquake measuring five 5 points on the Richter Scale was recorded yesterday in the southeast regions. The epicentre of the quake was the Karliova township of Bingol. Fifteen people had been reported injured.

    Meanwhile a second earthquake was reported in Erzurum with an intensity of 4.1 points. Although no casualties have been reported, damage is severe. /Sabah/ Milliyet_

    [12] POLICE WEEK CELEBRATED

    The 153rd anniversary of the Security Administration was celebrated yesterday. At the opening ceremony taking place in front of the Directorate General of Security, students from the Police Academy pledged their allegience to the Republic and Ataturk, the founder of the Republic. Director General of Security, Necati Bilican, said that the organization was now more successful in the services it was rendering throughout the country when compared to recent years and added that it would continue to serve the nation as it was expected to. /Hurriyet/
