    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] CULTURE FESTIVAL FOR D-8 GROUP

    The "Cultur Day" of the ceremony in the Bab-i Humayun Garden of Topkapi Palace on Wednesday morning was attended by PM Necmettin Erbakan and the cultural ministers of the D-8 member countries.

    Due to the establishment of the "Developing 8 (D-8) economic cooperation" project led by Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan which will be officially declared by a presidential summit next Sunday, the cultural festival which took place was a first of its kind. Music and dance groups from all member countries took the stage at Topkapi Palace and it was a true carnival of colors. The event was intended to celebrate the foundation of the D-8 group and was attended by the cultural ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

    The festival is now expected to take place on a yearly basis in the name of strengthening cultural ties between the D-8 members. This years events will continue until the 16th of June./Sabah/Cumhuriyet_

    [02] RED CRESCENT HOLDS 130TH ANNIVERSARY

    President Suleyman Demirel on Wednesday praised the Red Crescent on the occasion of its 130th year in operation, saying it had provided significant service since its inception. He called upon the public to help with donations of blood, personal property and funds, reported the Anatolia news agency.

    The general chairman of the Red Crescent, Kemal Demir, said that the organization, which was established on June 11, 1868, was preparing for the year 2000 by which time the institution will be reorganized, a factory for blood products will be built, and a computer network will be set up.

    [03] GENERAL STAFF: NEARLY 3,000 TERRORISTS TAKEN OUT OF ACTION

    Nearly 3,000 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists have so far been taken out of action during the Turkish Armed Forces recent cross-border operation in northern Iraq, announced the General Staff. A statement released by the General Secretariat of the Generla Staff claimed that the ongoing cross-border operation was being carried out successfully. "The PKK's Sedra and Qarfiyo camps have also been captured and 35 terrorists were killed," said the statement.

    Meanwhile during the operations conducted around Adakli province of Bingol, eight PKK terrorist and five soldiers were killed./Hurriyet/

    [04] TURKEY AND BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA RELEASE JOINT DECLARATION

    Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina released a joint declaration underlining that bilateral relations between the countries should be developed in many fields and that consensus should be reached on important matters such as the implementation of the Dayton Agreement. The joint declaration was signed by both countrys' presidents as an outcome of the official visit of the President of Bosnia-Herzegovina would be a new and important turn in the peace process. Both presidents that the Dayton Agreement was an un breakable entity that had to be implemented fully. They stressed too that the results of ethnic cleansing during the war era must be abolished./All papers/

    [05] NATO DEFENSE MINISTERS DISCUSS TERRORISM THREAT

    NATO defense ministers are expected to meet on Thursday in Brussels to review plans to overhaul the alliance command structures. Turkish Defense Minister Turhan Tayan together with General Staff and Defense Ministry analysts will represent Turkey at the meeting.

    Apart from the new alliance command structure , subjects such as fighting against terrorism and expansion of mass destruction weapons will be topics of discussion of the meeting.

    Ankara wants concrete collaboration within the alliance to combat terrorism and has a proposal to build a solidarity mechanism to control the transfer of weapons. Ankara recommends not hurrying while forming the new command structure. Defense Minister Turhan Tayan is expected to say again at the Brussels' meeting that Ankara lays stress on parallelism between the enlargement processes of NATO, the EU and the WEU./Milliyet/Cumhuriyet_

    [06] DIRECT TALKS IN CYPRUS SCHEDULED FOR JULY 9-13

    U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's invitation to hold direct talks on the Cyprus issue scheduled to take place between July 9-13 reached both leaders of the divided island on Wednesday. /Milliyet/Cumhuriyet_

    [07] WATER SUMMIT

    General Secretary of the Arab Union, Ismet Abdulmecit, has called upon Arab countries to discuss the water issue. Abdulmecit said that water quotas were determined by agreements and added that Arab countries should act in harmony in the water issue. /Milliyet/

    [08] BRUJERDI: "THERE ARE NO PKK CAMPS IN IRAN"

    Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alaadin Brujerdi said yesterday that relations between Turkey and Iran were not operating at the desired level. Brujerdi said that during his meetings in Ankara he had got the message that Turkish troops would withdraw from northern Iraq, which was very positive. He also denied claims that Iran was helping the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The Deputy Prime Minister said 30 PKK militants had been captured in Iran and had been handed over to the Turkish authorities. He claimed that his country would do its best for Turkey's security concerns, adding that a number of PKK militants had been captured but that their extradition was a matter of negotiation. He also asked Turkey to take necessary measures against Iranian opposition groups action in Turkey./Sabah/

    [09] SAHIN, NOMINEE FOR GERMAN OSCAR

    Kemal Sahin, the head of the executive board of Sahinler Holding, has been nominated for this year's "Entrepreneur of the Year" award viewed in Germany as the "Oscar" of the business world. This is the first time a Turk has been nominated for the award which is presented by Ernst and Young, and Manager magazines, the leading world consultant companies. With his 25 companies, Sahin has provided business opportunities for a total of 9,000 people, including 1,400 people in Germany. The award will be presented during a ceremony in Stuttgart, Germany, on 17 June. /Milliyet/

    [10] DELEGATION FROM CUBA IN TURKEY

    A delegation of the Friendship Association from Cuba has visited the Freedom and Solidarity Party in Turkey. Ricardo Rodriguez and Elio Gomez from the delegation said in a statement that their association was a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and added that they would meet with those Turkish political parties and institutions reacting against the economic embargo imposed by the US on Cuba. /Cumhuriyet/

    [11] DIRECT FLIGHTS TO SEUL

    The South Korean private airways company, Asiana Airlines, which has attracted attention with its investments especially in automotive and electronics, has started direct flights between Istanbul and Seul. Turkey's trade volume with South Korea has been rapidly increasing. /Cumhuriyet/

    [12] ITALIAN INVESTMENTS IN DIYARBAKIR

    It is reported that the Italian Lafer Company and Turkish Has Holding will jointly build a new plant in order to produce textile machines in Diyarbakir. Head of the Executive Board of Has Holding Saip Hasbay said that they had set up the Has-Trade Company jointly with Lafer. /Cumhuriyet/

    [13] TURKISH POLICE IN ALBANIA

    Turkey, which has sent 800 soldiers to Albania to contribute to security there, will now send police reinforcements. A Turkish high-level security official will also participate in 22-person international police training force. The international police force, consisting of high-level officials from European countries, will train Albanian police and conduct necessary studies to re-structure the Albanian police organization. /Hurriyet/

    [14] TURKISH INCLUDED IN TEXTILE CATALOGUES

    Because the Turkish textile sector is a big customer of the international textile and clothing machinery producers, Turkish has become the third main language of product catalogues. Previously printed using only English and German, now the big producers are using Turkish as well to describe their products in their trade catalogues. /Sabah/

    [15] TURKISH READY WEAR IN THE US

    After entrenching in the European market, Turkish ready wear producers are steadily becoming firmly established in the US market. Turkish products are totally accepted in Britain, Italy, Germany and France and are now looking strong in the States, said sector leader Onder Eren yesterday. /Hurriyet/

    [16] NEW INVESTMENT IN MARITIME SERVICES

    Chairman of the Turkish Chambers of Maritime Trade, Cengiz Kaptanoglu said yesterday that 100 million dollar's worth of new investment in the sector was now on the water- after five new cargo vessels were launched from Turkish shipyards during May.

    Turkey wants to beef up its maritime trade, and sector representatives noted during a meeting yesterday that a 500 vessel fleet of carriers and tankers would mean that Turkey could take on serious maritime transport commitments. /Cumhuriyet/

    [17] ANKARA IN THE MUSEUM OF ANATOLIAN CIVILIZATIONS

    A new section has been opened in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The section, now only partly open for visitors gives details about the Turkish capital of Ankara. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations was elected the "Best Meseum in Europe" from among 65 museums from 20 countries. /Hurriyet/

    [18] AYMATOV HONORARY CHAIRMAN OF TURKISH WRITERS' UNION

    World known Kyrgyz writer Cengiz Aymatov has been made the honorary chairman of the Foundation of Turkish Writers and Artists. Aymatov, who arrived in Turkey on the invitation of the foundation to participate in various cultural activities in Turkey, will be presented tomorrow with an award by President Demirel for his valuable contributions to the development of the Turkish world. /Hurriyet/

    [19] INTERNATIONAL IZMIR FESTIVAL

    The 11th International Izmir Festival was opened yesterday in the historic Ephesus Theatre with a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The festival is organized by the Izmir Foundation for Culture, Arts and Education. /Hurriyet/

    [20] BRITISH SUPPORT FOR TURKISH STUDENTS

    The British government will extend scholarships worth TL 350 billion to 110 Turkish students. The British Chevening schoolarship will be given especially to post-graduate students conducting research in fields like business administration, political sciences, economics, computer technologies and engineering. /Hurriyet/
