Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press
this morning
[01] DEMIREL STARTING FAR EAST TOUR
President Suleyman Demirel, accompanied by a 200-person
delegation, flies to Beijing for a 10-day tour to the Far East
covering China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Demirel will be the
second Turkish President to visit China and Indonesia, after
Kenan Evren. Late President Turgut Ozal was also due to go to
China, but he passed away just before his impending visit.
President Demirel will visit the Wall of China and the Tetra
Cota Museum in Xian City following his contacts in Beijin.
Foreign Minister Erdal Inonu will also go to China. State
Minister A.Baki Atac will accompany the president on his visit.
In China, Demirel is due to meet with President Jiang Zemin,
Prime Minister Li Peng and other top officials and visit
historical sites, a statement by the presidential press office
said yesterday. Zemin gave a message to the China Special
Issue of the Eka International Magazine which will be published
in English and Chinese on May 22 on the occasion of Demirel's
visit and said: "China, which attaches great importance to its
relations with Turkey, is ready to develop bilateral contacts
in economy, commerce and in other fields. I am sure that
President Demirel's visit to China will carry our friendly
relations and cooperation to new levels". Flying to Hong Kong
on May 27, Demirel will address two conferences. On May 29, he
will start a visit to Indonesia as the official guest of
President Suharto. Demirel is expected to return home on May

[02] 20,000 WALK TO MARK TURKISH DAY IN US
Some 20,000 Turks participated in the 14th traditional "Turkish
Day Walk" held in New York, the Anatolia news agency reported
yesterday. Nuzhet Kandemir, Turkish Ambassador to the US, Inal
Batu, Turkish Ambassador to the UN and several Turkish deputies
took part in the walk. US President Bill Clinton, in a message
marking the day, said that foreign groups settled in the
country should be proud of their contributions to the US.
Turks from the Crimea, the Balkans, Azerbaijan, Karachay, Kazan
and Cyprus, and people from Turkistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Macedonia, Albania and Chechnya
participated in the walk. A banner reading "No to the Shari'a"
carried by the Young Turks institution was applauded by the

[03] CAPPADOCCIA A POPULAR DESTINATION
Cappadoccia, one of the most popular tourist destinations in
Turkey, has been visited by almost 79,000 tourists in the last
month, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. Quoting
tourism officials, the agengy said that almost 40,000 of the
tourists were foreigners, and the number of tourists is
expected to double this month.
[04] TURKISH RED CRESCENT RECEIVES ATATURK PEACE AWARD
Kemal Demir, Chairman of the Turkish Red Crescent society was
presented with this year's Ataturk peace award by President
Suleyman Demirel at a special ceremony, the Anatolia news
agency reported yesterday. Speaking at the presentation
ceremony, Demirel said he was satisfied that the Turkish Red
Crescent had received the award. Noting that the society had
worked for peace throughout its history, Demirel said: "Our
dear Red Crescent definitely deserved this award. Look how
well they suit each other. Great Ataturk, his peace award and
the Turkish Red Crescent side by side. I can hardly imagine a
more beautiful picture".
[05] US DELEGATION TO VISIT ANKARA
A high-level delegation from the US will arrive in Turkey at
the end of the month to take up a number of issues including
the future of an allied force stationed in Turkey, according to
a report yesterday by the Anatolia news agency from Washington.
The agency reported that the delegation would be headed by Mark
Parris, Near East Adviser to the National Security Council.
Members of the State Department will also be in the delegation.
The visit takes place following a suggestion by Prime Minister
Tansu Ciller to US President Bill Clinton that the shape of
Operation Poised Hammer -the popular name for an allied
coalition force based in Turkey to maintain the no-fly zone
over northern Iraq- must be changed.
[06] CILLER LAYS FOUNDATION OF POWER PLANT
Prime Minister Tansu Ciller laid the foundation of a power
plant in Esenyurt near Istanbul yesterday. The thermal power
plant, which will cost $190 million, is projected to produce
1.3 billion KWh of electricity annually when completed. The
plant is also planned to supply heating and hot water
facilities to nearly 14,000 homes in Esenyurt, officials told
the Anatolia news agency.
[07] "SECRET" CYPRUS TALKS ARE DUE TO BEGIN TODAY
TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos
Klerides are to begin secret talks in London today to try to
bridge the gap between the two sides on the divided island of
Cyprus. The talks, suggested by Washington and London, will
take place in the London office of US President Bill Clinton's
Special Envoy to Cyprus, Richard Beattie. Attorney General
Alecos Markidis and former justice minister Stella Souliotis
will represent the Greek-Cypriots while an advisor to
Turkish-Cypriot President Rauf Denktas, Necati Munir Ertekun,
and Ozker Koray will speak for the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus (TRNC). Beattie and the British diplomat in Cyprus,
Colin Jennings will attend the meetings as observers.

[08] MENTESE VISITS BULGARIA
Interior Minister Nahit Mentese went to Bulgaria yesterday to
discuss cooperation between the two countries against terrorism
and organized crime. Ankara is concerned that the PKK
terrorist organization is establishing bases in Bulgaria
because of the country's proximity to Turkey. Mentese will
meet with Bulgarian Prime Minister Jan Videnov today and he
will give a press conference tomorrow. He will return to
Turkey on Tuesday. /All papers/
[09] YOUTH AND SPORTS DAY CELEBRATED WITH GUSTO
The May 19 National Youth and Sports Day, which is recognized
as the start of the Turkish Republic's War of Liberation, was
celebrated with gusto in several ceremonies throughout the
country as well as in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

[10] "BLACK VOICE" BURIED
The remains of Cemalettin Kaplan, a Turkish mufti who declared
himself "caliph" and who died last Monday at his house in
Cologne, Germany were brought to Turkey and buried in Erzurum
province on Friday, the Anatolia news agency reported.
[11] EXPORTS ON FURTHER RISE
In the first four months of 1995, registered exports increased
by 31 % and reached $6.91 billion, compared to the same period
last year, according to statistics provided by the Exporters'

[12] BRITISH TRADE MISSION TO TURKEY
24 British companies will be represented on a trade mission to
Turkey organized by the Wolverhampton Chamber of Commerce and
Industry from May 22 to May 26. This will be the chamber's
third mission to Turkey since 1993. /All papers/
[13] OSCE GROUP MEETS IN MOSCOW
Representatives from the Minsk group, formed within the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to
sponsor a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute
between Azerbaijan and Armenia, met in Moscow on Friday for a
new round of peace talks. Senior diplomats represent Turkey at
the meeting of the 11-nation Minsk group. /All papers/
[14] MOTHERLAND PARTY CELEBRATES 12TH ANNIVERSARY
The Motherland Party (ANAP) celebrated the 12th anniversary of
its establishment, over the weekend. The Saturday ceremonies
included a visit by ANAP leader Mesut Yilmaz to the Istanbul
grave of the party's founder, late President Turgut Ozal,
before joining the celebrations in Ankara's Ataturk Sports

[15] MONETARY AID TO NORTHERN IRAQ
Monetary aid is to be extended to Northern Iraqi Kurds who
suffered losses during the "Steel Operations" undertaken by the
Turkish Armed Forces. Payment will be made by the Turkish
Ministry of Defence at a ceremony in Silopi on 24 May.

[16] GREEK GOVERNMENT GIVEN TO COURT
Yildirim Aktuna, State Minister and Spokesman of the Turkish
government is sueing the Greek government on the grounds that
it did not prevent the attack against him in Western Thrace and
did not take necessary measures. Recalling that the smallest
problem in Turkey was referred to the European Human Rights
Court by Westerns, Aktuna said that aside from lack of
necessary measures during his visit, the Greek government had
withdrawn the police from areas where the protestation
demonstrations were most rampant. /Hurriyet/
[17] THIRTEEN PKK TERRORISTS KILLED
Thirteen PKK terrorists have been killed in the conflicts
between the security forces and terrorists in operations in
Southeast Anatolia. During the conflicts in the Cudi and
Kupeli mountains of Sirnak, 10 PKK terrorists were killed and
one wounded. Additionally three terrorists were killed in in
conflicts in Siirt's Baykan, Bitlis Kavakdibi and Mardin's
Nusaybin districts. During the search conducted in Nusaybin, a
large cache of weapons was unearthed. In an operation
undertaken in the center of Mus province, 25 members of the
illegal "Hizbullah" organization have been taken into custody.
Meanwhile, another operation has been started to search for PKK
terrorists responsible for razing, a trailer and lorry
belonging to the Rural Services Directorate in Karincali
village in Mus Malazgirt district.
[18] COALITION SET UP IN THE TURKISH REPUBLIC OF NORTHERN CYPRUS
The 84 days government crisis in the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been resolved yesterday and the
coalition partners, Democrat Party and The Turkish Republican
Party have come to an agreement. Hakki Atun, leader of the DP
who has been charged to set up the government fifteen days ago,
presented the new cabinet to Denktas after the agreement
between the two parties. No changes on a ministerial level
have been affected in the 10-member cabinet. /Hurriyet/
