    -DSP GROUP MEETING (1)
-PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT SAYS 2002 YEAR TO BE YEAR OF DEMOCRACY, PROGRESS AND
    DEVELOPMENT
ANKARA - Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) said on Thursday that if there won't be any problem, the 2002 year will be a year of democracy, development and progress.

''Things are going fine,'' told Ecevit in the party group meeting and noted that the 2002 year will be year of hope for Turkey.

Ecevit said that the economic signs started to be positive, adding that ''we must protect the sensitivity in markets. The important mission in this regard is keeping harmony in the coalition government.''

Ecevit recalled that he would go to the U.S. next week upon the invitation of U.S. President George W. Bush, adding that the business circles showed great interest in his visit.

Noting that having more concrete and effective strategic partnership with the U.S. depends on improving the bilateral economic and commercial relations, Ecevit said that ''our difficulty in this issue is the presence of certain lobbies which are against Turkey in the U.S. Turkey's lobbies in the U.S. are not that fast and widespread. If our commercial and economic relations with the U.S. improve and if the obstacles that stand in front of our trade with the U.S. are lifted, Turkish enterpreneurs will contribute to Turkey in respect of lobby.''

Ecevit noted that they reached an agreement about the bill that gave the opportunity to transfer sources to the banks.

Meanwhile, State Minister Kemal Dervis participated in the DSP group meeting to give information about the regulation on banking.

    -DSP GROUP MEETING (2)
-PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT SAYS DESPITE POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN MARKETS, THEY
SHOULD PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO SENSITIVITY OF MARKET
ANKARA - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) said on Thursday, ''despite positive developments in markets, we should pay careful attention to sensitivity of the market. Harmony among three political parties forming the coalition government is of great importance to this end.''

Speaking at the DSP group meeting, Prime Minister Ecevit said, ''decrease in inflation rate has been continuing. Interest rates have also been reducing. Turkish lira has begun to gain value against U.S. dollar. Our exports increased to 31 billion U.S. dollars in 2001. Increase in exports also revives production, and reduces unemployment. These are very positive developments. However, despite all these positive developments in markets, we should pay careful attention to sensitivity of the market. Harmony among three political parties forming the coalition government is of great importance to this end.''

Referring to his scheduled visit to the United States next week, Prime Minister Ecevit said that more than 100 entrepreneurs will participate in the visit.

Underlining importance of strategical partnership between Turkey and the United States, Prime Minister Ecevit said that efforts to make this partnership more concrete and influential depended on further improvement of economic and commercial relations with the United States.

''There are lobbies in the United States expending efforts against Turkey. However, Turkish lobbies are not widespread. If our economic and commercial relations with the United States are further improved, our entrepreneurs can contribute to lobby activities in the United States. We attribute great importance to further improvement of our economic and commercial relations with the United States. I believe that this issue would be taken up during our contacts with U.S. officials in detail,'' he said.

Prime Minister Ecevit said, ''the prior condition to revive economy, to strengthen investment and production and to increase welfare of our people is banks' support to production and investment. New draft law about banks aims at increasing the support to production and investment.''

Prime Minister Ecevit said that Halk Bankasi and Ziraat Bankasi would provide additional loan opportunities to small and medium scale enterprises (KOBIs), tradesmen, artisans and farmers.

Referring to severe winder conditions throughout Turkey, Prime Minister Ecevit said, ''although we can take measures against earthquake and flood disasters, there is nothing that can be done against snowfall. Relevant public institutions have been expending efforts to prevent any problem in transportation.''

Ecevit added that State Minister Kemal Dervis for Economy was invited to the DSP group meeting upon desire of DSP deputies.

Later, Dervis informed DSP deputies on the arrangement about banking sector.
