    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    GARIH WOULD VISIT HIS SHEIK IN EYUP GRAVEYARD
    Famous businesssman Uzeyir Garih was found slain, stabbed several

    times, near a war hero's grave in Eyub graveyard in Istanbul yesterday. He would visit Huseyin Efendi's grave, one of Naksibendi sects sheiks whose grave was near the grave of Marshal Fevzi Cakmak. Garih was a prominent member of the Jewish community and he frequently visited the grave of Huseyin Efendi.

    MAD FUAT CAPTURED
    A few hours after the killing of Uzeyir Garih, police captured a mentally disturbed Turkish youth for the stabbing. Police said the F. D. whose nickname was ''Mad Fuat'' and who was a drug addict was captured. A total of 14 persons were also taken into custody with him.

    MILLIYET (LIBERAL)

    ALATON SAYS BUSINESS WORLD LOST ONE GENERAL
    The killing of Uzeyir Garih shocked everybody. Ishak Alaton, the partner of Garih for 45 years, said that Turkish business world lost one of its generals. Alaton who felt sick after hearing his partner's being killed, said that he might be killed by poor persons who wanted to get his mobile phone.

    ECEVIT GIVES FIRST SIGNAL
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that the government is resolved to encourage invesments while taking steps to further improve the respectability of Turkish Lira (TL). Ecevit told in a news conference that the government prepares to lift the bureaucratic impediments in front of foreign capital, adding that the government expects investment, not donations or loans from citizens living abroad.

    Ecevit said that the campaign started by business circles to increase the respectability of TL is very pleasing.''The currency of a state is its honour. A powerful economy can't be set up with weak currency. Giving priority to TL in shoppings and financial transactions is a very effective measure. But we must accept one reality: our currency's losing value is not the reason, but the result of the problems in economy. Thus we must both improve the respectability of TL, and at the same time we must speed up efforts to strengthen real economy. The government has started to apply effective monetary policies to this end.'' When asked if the government plans to benefit from ''money under the mattress,'' Ecevit said that the government also takes measures on this issue.

    SABAH (LIBERAL)

    RELIGIOUS DIRECTORATE SUPPORTS TL
    The Religious Affairs Directorate decided to support the campaign started by certain vocational organizations and which is also backed by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Religious Affairs Director Mehmet Nuri Yılmaz said that they prepare a sermon to be delivered at prayers in mosques to support TL.

    YILMAZ SAYS TURKEY CAN MISS EU TRAIN
    State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz said that if political parties can't reach agreement about the constitutional amendment package till mid-September, Turkey won't be able to abide by the calendar foreseen to be a member of EU and can miss the EU train. ''If this is the case, Turkey's relations with EU will be left over at least for one year. This is the thing that Turkey must be afraid of at most,'' Yılmaz told the private tv channel CNN Turk.

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    KIVRIKOGLU VISITS AZERBAIJAN
    Chief of General Staff Gen. Huseyin Kıvrıkoglu who went to Baku, Azerbaijan for two days, was received by Azerbaijani President Haydar Aliyev yesterday. Noting that Azerbaijan attributes great importance to its relations with Turkey, Aliyev said that the bilateral relations have to further improve. Gen. Kıvrıkoglu said that Turkey regards Azerbaijan as ''one nation, two states,'' adding Turkey will continue to support Azerbaijan. Aliyev also presented ''Azerbaijani Flag'' medal to Gen. Kıvrıkoglu for the contributions he made to improving of the relations between the two countries.

    OSS EXAM RESULTS TO BE ANNOUNCED TODAY
    The results of University Entrance Exams (OSS) and Foreign Language Exam (YDS) will be announced today. The students will learn which universities they were elected from internet, telephone lines starting with the number 900 and exam result paper.

    HEZBOLLAH CONFESSOR AND HIS SON KILLED
    A father and son, both former members of terrorist Hezbollah organization, were killed on Saturday in their car when it stopped for red light in Esenler district of Istanbul. Two gunmen shot dead the persons in the car dead and later ran away from the scene. Saban Elaltunteri had acted together with Hezbollah chief Huseyin Velioglu, who was earlier killed in a police operation in Beykoz district of Istanbul. Elaltunteri who was sentenced to 12 years and six months by Diyarbakır State Security Court (DGM) No. 3, had later benefited from the repentance Law and released. Elaltunteri was a confessor who benefited from the repentance law. He later told the police that the Hezbollah terrorist organization issued an order to kill him.

    TURKIYE (RIGHT)

    STATE SHOULD ALSO SUPPORT CAMPAIGN TO BOOST TL
    Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the business world extend great support to the campaign started by Ankara Trade Chamber (ATO) to improve the respectability of Turkish Lira (TL). These groups want the state to support the campaign, too and to give up using the U.S. dollars as a basis in tenders.

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    YUCELEN SAYS GARIH'S KILLING IS VERY SERIOUS
    Interior Minister Rustu Kazım Yucelen said that the suspect who is beleieved to kill Uzeyir Garih, a famous businessman, was captured and his interrogation continued. Yucelen said that the incident is very serious, adding that ''the killing is investigated very broadly. We can get a result within few days.''

    [02] CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF VISITS MARTYRS STREET IN BAKU

    BAKU - Chief of General Staff Gen. Huseyin Kıvrıkoglu visited on Sunday Martrys Street and laid a wreath to Martyrs Monument.

    Gen. Kıvrıkoglu got information from officials about the plaquette on which the names of Turkish martyrs were written.

    Azerbaijani Defense Minister Sefer Abiyev, Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Kadri Ecvet Tezcan and other officials were also present during Gen. Kıvrıkoglu's visit.

    The Martyrs Street was built to commomerate Turks who came to Azerbaijan from Turkey in 1918 to join the fight for independence of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijanis who were killed during this fight.

    [03] EARTHQUAKE SHAKES DUZCE

    BOLU - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook Duzce and Bolu provinces early on Sunday.

    Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory and Seismology Centre said that the epicenter of the quake was Yıgılca township of northwestern Duzce province and it was recorded at 3.41 a.m.

    The quake was also felt in Ankara, Zonguldak, Bartın and Karabuk provinces.

    Bolu governor Mehmet Ali Turker said after the quake that two citizens who got panic during the quake jumped from the balconies, were injured and hospitalized. Turker said that there are no casualties in Bolu and Duzce provinces.

    Many citizens who left their homes during the quake spent the night outside.

    [04] GARIH'S KILLING -SUSPECT IS 13 YEARS OLD

    ISTANBUL - Fuat N. who was taken into custody as he was accused of killing famous businessman Uzeyir Garih, was reported on Saturday night to be 13 years old.

    The interrogation of Fuat M. who is called ''Mad Fuat'' in Eyup district of Istanbul and who is a drug addict, continues.

    Meanwhile the other persons who were taken into custody are also questioned at Istanbul Anti-Terrorism Department.

    [05] ISTANBUL GOVERNOR CAKIR AND ACTING ISTANBUL SECURITY DIRECTOR OZDEMIR RE-EXAMINE SCENE OF GARIH MURDER

    ISTANBUL - Istanbul Governor and Acting Istanbul Director Hasan Ozdemir re- examined on Sunday Eyub graveyard where famous businessman Uzeyir Garih was stabbed to death on Saturday.

    Nearly 200 policemen started to search the graveyard to find knives or other things used in the murder.

    Interior Minister Rustu Kazım Yucelen said yesterday that the interrogation of the suspect continued and a result could be taken soon. He added that the murder has to be investigated in a detailed way.

    Security Director General Kemal Onal also said late on Saturday that the investigation into the killing of Garih continued. All clues are investigated, he said.

    [06] STATE MINISTER GUREL LEAVES FOR CHINA

    ISTANBUL - State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel left for China on Saturday evening.

    Speaking at Ataturk Airport before his departure, Gurel said that

    he would meet with Chinese Foreign Minister and hold contacts about the ties of Turkish Coal Authority and Eti Holding in this country.

    Gurel said that he would proceed to Australia from China and meet with Australian Foreign Minister and certain ministers there. Gurel stated that he would also have a meeting with Turkish associations in Australia.

    After having contacts in China and Australia, Gurel will proceed to Singapore and return to Turkey on September 11.

    [07] GREEK TOURISM DIRECTOR GENERAL KOSTA SAYS TURKEY AND GREECE MUST SIGN TOURISM COOPERATION AGREEMENT

    FETHIYE - Greek Tourism Director General Kastigiannis Kosta said on Saturday that Turkey and Greece must sign a tourism cooperation agreement.

    Kosta came to Kayakoy, a village in Fethiye township of western Mugla province with a group of Greek people the same day. Kayakoy (Rock village) has been declared as ''International World Peace and Friendship Village.''

    Kosta and Kayakoy head official Erdogan Kaya decided to start studies to make sister villages Kayakoy and Levissi village, which was found near Athens by Greek people who migrated from Karakoy to Greece in the past.

    ''Ecologic and cultural tourism between the two countries have to improve, '' added Kosta.

    [08] GARIH MURDER -POLICE FIND SACK WRITTEN ''GOD'' ON IT WITH BLOOD IN EYUP GRAVEYARD

    ISTANBUL - Police found on Sunday a sack written ''God'' in Arabic on it with blood in Eyup graveyard where Uzeyir Garih, a famous businessman was stabbed to death on Saturday.

    Nearly 200 policemen searched this morning for things used in murder of Garih in the graveyard.

    The sack which was found near the grave of Kucuk Huseyin Efendi (next to the grave of Marshal Fevzi Cakmak) was taken to the security directorate.

    Fuat N. who was taken into custody as he was charged of killing Garih, was kept in a police car during the search.

    [09] SOCCER-EURO-2008 -TURKISH AND GREEK SOCCER FEDERATIONS WORKING GROUPS TO HOLD MEETING IN ISTANBUL ON MONDAY

    ISTANBUL - The working groups of Turkish and Greek Football Federations which want to organize together the finals of European Football Championship in 2008 (EURO-2008), will come together for the last time in Istanbul on Monday.

    The working groups were formed by the two soccer federations to organize together EURO-2008 finals.

    Cooperation protocol on candidacy will be declared on August 28 in Conrad Hotel.

    [10] TURKEY AND SUDAN SIGN AGREEMENT ON PREVENTION OF DOUBLE TAXATION

    IZMIR - Finance Minister Sumer Oral and Sudanese Minister of Industry and Investment Galal Al-Diggeir signed on Sunday an agreement on prevention of double taxation on behalf of Turkey and Sudan.

    The agreement will contribute to improvement of economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

    Addressing the signing ceremony, Oral said that the economic and commercial relations between Turkey and Sudan are not at sufficient level. Inviting Sudanese businessmen to invest in Turkey, Oral said that ''there is suitable atmosphere in Turkey for foreign investments.''

    Oral said that Turkey signed 63 agreements on prevention of double taxation with various countries to date, adding that 46 of them went into force.

    Galal Al-Diggeir said in his part that the relations between Turkey and Sudan have special importance, adding that Sudan wants to further improve the relations.

    Al Daggeer said that Turkish businessmen should also benefit from the stability atmosphere in Sudan and make investment in this country.

    The bilateral relations will further improve after the signing of the agreement on prevention of double taxation, he said.

    The agreement aims to prevent the taxation of the same income in both countries and to end the problems caused by double taxation on capital, technology and labour transfer.

    Meanwhile high ranking representatives of 68 countries including 14 ministers who came to Izmir for 70th International Izmir Fair, came together in breakfast at Efes Hotel.

    The guests were later informed about foreign capital, investment, incentives, free zones and foreign trade of Turkey in a meeting.

    [11] STATE MINISTER DERVIS TO MEET WITH TIM MEMBERS ON MONDAY

    ISTANBUL - Oguz Satıcı, the Chairman of Turkey Exporters Assembly (TIM) asserted on Sunday that producers and exporters have been left alone for the last two years adding that these sectors expect certain concrete results to be taken.

    State Minister Kemal Dervis will come together with Oguz Satıcı, TIM Chairman and TIM's Executive Board members in Istanbul on Monday and discuss the problems of real sector.

    Eximbank Director General Ahmet Kılıcoglu and Exports Director General Soner Masa will also be present in the meeting.

    Satıcı told A.A that the meeting is in fact a ''late'' one, adding that ''the representatives of 20 sectors will explain Mr. Dervis their problems and the situation in export market.''

    Satıcı stressed that the real sector should not be ignored anymore, commenting that Turkey will no longer produce goods if necessary measures are not taken soon to activate the whole real sector.

    The economic difficulty Turkey has today stems from its being a model which is only based on imports and consumption for the last 10 years, he stressed and asserted that Turkey's problems can be solved with an export model based on production.

    TIM will also submit a report to Dervis about the problems and solutions of the real sector.

    [12] STATE MINISTER GUREL MEETS WITH CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER JIAXUAN

    BEIJING - State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel, who came to China on Sunday morning, met with Chinese Foreign Minister

    Tang Jiaxuan.

    Gurel conveyed the verbal message of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit about the passage of Varyag ship from the Turkish straits in the meeting and said that an instruction was given for the passage, which will come true after the completion of technical studies.

    Gurel and Tang also took up issues related to improvement of the cooperation between Turkey and China in their meeting.

    The two ministers reached an agreement to continue consultations about political issues and to make cooperation in fields like tourism to correct the inbalance in the bilateral trade.

    State Minister Gurel reiterated Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's invitation to Chinese Prime Minister Rongji Zhu. The Chinese side said that visit would take place soon.

    Gurel who will continue his contacts with Chinese officials on Monday, will also come together with Turks living in Beijing.

    [13] ITALIAN DEPUTY MINISTER OF PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES STEFANI HOLDS CONTACTS IN IZMIR

    IZMIR - Italian Deputy Minister of Productive Activities Stefano Stefani said on Sunday that the issue of closing the Italian consulate in Izmir which serves persons for 140 years, is not clear yet.

    Stefani who is currently in western Izmir province to participate in International Izmir Fair, to know better the general economic structure of the city and to examine projects for the future, met with representatives of Aegean Region Industry Chamber (EBSO), Izmir Trade Chamber (EBSO), Izmir Trade Chamber (IZTO), Aegean Free Zone Founder and Operator Inc. (ESBAS) and Turkish-Italian Businessman Association.

    IZTO Executive Board President Demirtas said after the meeting that the trade volume between the two countries recently decreased from 10 million dollars to 6 million dollars.

    Noting that they asked Italian deputy minister to review the decision of closing Izmir Italian Consulate, Demirtas said that ''Izmir Trade Chamber proposes opening of a representation office whose secretariat to be financed by us to ensure continuity of economic and cultural activities. The political issues of the Consulate will be carried out in Istanbul and Ankara and cultural and economic issues can be carried out in Izmir.''

    Demirtas said that EBSO informed Italian deputy minister about regional industry, infrastructure services and cooperation fields and EBSAS informed him about the free zone and invited Italian investors at the meeting.

    Stefano Stefani said in his part that they would evaluate the proposal of IZTO about Italian Consulate in Izmir.

    [14] UZEYIR GARIH TO BE BURIED ON AUGUST 28

    ISTANBUL - Famous businessman Uzeyir Garih, who was stabbed to death in Eyup graveyard on Saturday, will be buried in Istanbul on Tuesday.

    Alarko Holding said on Sunday that a religious ceremony will take place at Neve Shalom Synagogue at 13.00 local time on Tuesday and Garih will later be laid to rest at Ulus Jewish Graveyard.

    [15] ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTRY UNDERSECRETARY ARAZI COMES TO TURKEY

    ISTANBUL - Israeli Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Arik Arazi came to Turkey on Sunday.

    Arazi said that he came to Turkey for an official visit, but he didn't give details about his contacts.
