    GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER AND TURKISH JOURNALIST
    VISITS TURKISH VILLAGES IN NORTH GREECE
    Akis Tsochadzopoulos, the Defense Minister of Greece, and Nur Batur, a Turkish journalist, visited the Turkish villages in the north of Greece. The entrance and exit to these villages were forbidden in the civil war in 1936 to prevent the communists from sneaking into Greece in those days. Nowadays, Greece is planning to cancel this policy and the Turkish people living in these villages won't have to take permits for leaving or entering the region.

    CULTURE TRAIN ON ITS WAY FOR FRIENDSHIP
    The parliamentarians of the Parliamentary Turkish-Macedonian Interparliamentary Friendship Group, artists, and journalists started to visit several cities in Balkan region by the culture train. Kemal Vatan, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Turkish-Macedonian Interparliamentary Friendship Group, said that the tour with the culture train was important as it would strengthen the friendship ties betweeen Turkey and the Balkan countries. A documentary film named Anatolian Light will also be projected in different cities during the tour.

    DEMIREL IN INVESTIGATION COMMITTEE OF THE MIDDLE EAST
    The White House declared that an investigation committee would be founded to investigate the recent clashes between Istraelis and the Palestinians in the Middle East. Suleyman Demirel, former President of Turkey, will be one of the members of the Committee which will be headed by George Mitchell, a former American senator. The committee will be impartial and objective to provide solution to the recent clashes in the Middle East.

    INITIATIVES STARTED TO ORGANIZE FORMULA 1 RACES IN TURKEY
    Initiatives were started to organize Formula 1 Races in Turkey in the coming days. Mumtaz Tahincioglu, the Chairman of the Turkish Automobile Users Federation said that they started to work for the organization of Formula 1 Races in Turkey. Noting that this organization would cost around 60 million U.S. dollars, Tahincioglu said the income obtained from the races would be around 150 million U.S. dollars. Tahincioglu added that the Formula 1 Races would also contribute to the promotion of Turkey.

    GARIPOGLU CONFESSES: ''YES, I DID''
    Hayyam Garipoglu, the former owner of Sumerbank who was transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund'', confessed the crime he had committed 11 months later. Garipoglu, who filed a lawsuit against the Council of State demanding that his bank should be given back to him, was interrogated by the Istanbul State Security Court (DGM) and then sent to prison. Garipoglu confessed that he transferred 52 million U.S. dollars from the off-shore accounts to his personal account when he learned that his bank would be transferred to the Fund.

    YILMAZ: ''NEW AGENDA WILL BE REFORM''
    Mesut Yilmaz, the Deputy Prime Minister, said that Turkey has to start working after the European Union (EU) gives the road map. Yilmaz said that Turkey should comply with and adjust to the EU in every field from sports to laws, from health to education and to bureaucracy.

    FOREIGN MINISTER CEM: ''THERE IS NO RETURN FROM HELSINKI''
    Foreign Minister Ismail Cem said that the Helsinki Summit was a milestone and that Turkey is trying to plan the further stages following this summit. Cem said that the Accession Partnership Accord will not be very different from the resolutions taken at the Helsinki Summit.

    STRUGGLE AGAINST CORRUPTION AND FUNDAMENTALISM
    Interior Minister Saadettin Tantan sent circulars to the governors in which he requested the governors to determine the strategies to struggle against corruption, fundamentalism and gangs. Emphasizing that the dimension of the corruption cannot be understood yet, the circular said that the governors and head officials are not efficient in struggling against corruption, fundamentalism and gangs.

    RADIKAL (LEFT)

    GALATASARAY QUALIFIES TO SECOND TOUR
    Galatasaray soccer club drew with Sturm Graz 2-2. When Glasgow Rangers drew with AS Monaco soccer club in the other match played in the Group D, Galatasaray qualified to the second tour.

    IMRALI TO BE DISCUSSED
    State Minister Rustu Kazim Yucelen said that the project for imprisonment of leaders of gangs in Imrali Prison is a virtual project. Yucelen noted that the Council of Ministers will discuss this issue. Yucelen said that a meeting on the conditions and details of this issue has not been held yet, adding that human rights is a right also valid for the inmates.

    YENI BINYIL (LIBERAL)

    ISRAELI PREMIER BARAK WRITES LETTER TO ECEVIT
    Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak wrote a letter to Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, and claimed that the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat wasn't sincere for his quest of peace in the Middle East. Barak also claimed that Israel wasn't responsible for the death of the civilians during the clashes. Meanwhile, Ecevit asked the Middle East Department of the Turkish Foreign Ministry to write a reply to Barak's letter, adding that the style in the letter should be objective and balanced.

    GARCIA, AMBASSADOR OF FRANCE TO TURKEY, SAYS YOUTH POPULATION
    IS THE ADVANTAGE OF TURKEY FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP IN EU
    Bernard Garcia, the Ambassador of France to Turkey said that the youth population of Turkey was an advantage for the full membership of Turkey to the European Union (EU). Garcia added that among the candidate countries Turkey had the biggest chance to be the full member of the EU. Noting that France extended support to the membership of Turkey, Garcia said the recent developments in the economy, and efficiency of the Turkish state were the reasons of this support.

    TURKIYE (RIGHT)

    FOREIGN CAPITAL TO FLOW IN TURKEY
    The International Institution of Finance (IIF) said that foreign capital worth of 13 billion U.S dollars will flow in Turkey next year. The officials of the IIF pointed out that this inflow would be realized as there were recent developments in the privatization in Turkey. IIF added that the economic program which was implemented with the support of International Monetary Fund (IMF) had also increased the credibility of Turkey in the economic arena.

    NORWAY TO FOUND POWER STATION IN TURKEY
    Cumhur Ersumer, the Minister of Evergy and Natural Resources who had a meeting with Olav Akselsen, the Norwegian Minister of Petrolium and Energy, said that Norway wanted to establish a hydroelectric power station in Turkey. Ersumer noted that the power station with the capacity of 150 megawatts was planned to be founded in Arhavi township of northern Artvin province.

    PIERRE LOTI AGAINST ARMENIAN ALLEGATIONS
    Culture Minister Istemihan Talay sent a letter to Francois Poncelet, the Speaker of French Senate, in which he showed the letters of famous French author Pierre Loti against the allegations on the so-called genocide on the Armenians. Talay also sent letters to French Culture Minister Catherine Tasca, French National Education Minister Jack Lang, and French Ambassador Bernard Garcia due to the resolution on the so-called genocide on the Armenians. Talay said that he enclosed the book titled ''Letters of Turkey'' which included the letters that Loti had written to witness some historical incidents, in his letter. Talay said that this book included some of the letters that Loti had written to Louis Barthou between 1910 and 1922. The book included Loti's opinion about some incidents which occured in the east of Turkey during and after the World War I, Talay stated. Talay added, ''I hope you will be persuaded about the rightness of the opinion of the Turkish historians, Turkish nation, and Turkish government by the letters that Loti, who was one of the most reliable witnesses that the two nations can accept, had written.''

    TENDER FOR SALE OF THY TO BE OPENED IN THE END OF THIS MONTH
    Fevzi Aricioglu, the Deputy Chairman of the Privatization Administration Board, said that 51 percent of the Turkish Airlines (THY) will be privatized and that the tender wil be opened no later than the end of this month. Reminding that 51 percent of the shares of Eregli Iron and Steel Enterprises (ERDEMIR) belongs to the state, Aricioglu said that they aim at decreasing this amount below 50 percent by public offers.

    -ADOPTION OF RESOLUTION ON SO-CALLED
    GENOCIDE ON ARMENIANS BY FRENCH SENATE
    -DEPUTY AKARCALI: ''THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS
    UNDERESTIMATED AND DECEIVED TURKEY''
    PARIS - Bulent Akarcali, a deputy who was in the parliamentary delegation which went to France, said on Wednesday that the French government has underestimated and deceived Turkey.

    The resolution on the so-called genocide on the Armenians was adopted by the French Senate. The resolution will be submitted to the French parliament.

    Prior to the voting, French senators Jacques Richard Delong and Michel Pelchat, who supported Turkey, submitted a motion for the rejection of the resolution because it is against the French constitution. But, this motion was rejected.

    Before the voting, Akarcali met with the French senators and said that neither French President Jacques Chirac nor French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin carried out initiatives to prevent the resolution.

    Akarcali noted that if the resolution is put into force, economic, cultural and social relations between Turkey and France will be damaged.

    -U.S. AMBASSADOR PEARSON SAYS RESULTS OF ELECTIONS
    WILL NOT AFFECT TURKISH-U.S. RELATIONS
    ANKARA - Robert Pearson, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, said on Wednesday that the results of the U.S. presidential elections will not affect the present Turkish-U.S. relations.

    Pearson and his wife Margareth Pearson, and some high-ranking U.S. embassy officials came to the Turkish-American Association to watch the results of the presidential elections.

    When asked how the results of the elections will affect the Turkish-U.S. relations, Pearson said that he has been asked this question very often for the last few days.

    Pearson noted that he does not think that the results of the elections will change the present relations.

    The relations between the two countries depend on very important and stable issues, Pearson stated.

    Pearson said that besides the traditional friendship between the two nations, there is an increase in the economic and commercial relations between Turkey and the U.S.

    Because of all these reasons, I do not think our relations will be affected, Pearson added.

    -HAYYAM GARIPOGLU, FORMER OWNER OF SUMERBANK ARRESTED
    ISTANBUL - Hayyam Garipoglu, the former owner of Sumerbank, was arrested and sent to prison early on Wednesday.

    Sumerbank was previously transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund.

    The testimonies of Garipoglu, and other eleven people including the brother of Garipoglu, were taken in the State Security Court (DGM) No.6.

    Garipoglu was arrested and sent to prison on charges of forming a gang to empty the bank's coffers.

    Nizam Garipoglu, the brother of Hayyam Garipoglu, Burhan Tastan, Murat Yuksel, Ali Aydin, Cem Feridun Yesil, Nadir Naseh, Bulent Gokhan Gunay, Tugrul Huseyin Mataraci, Faruk Unal, and Metin Berk were released to be tried without detention.

    -SECURITY FORCES CAPTURE 69 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN SEFERIHISAR
    SEFERIHISAR - Security forces captured 69 illegal immigrants, who wanted to proceed to foreign countries, in Seferihisar township of Aegean Izmir province on Wednesday.

    Security forces, patrolling off shore Seferihisar by a coastguard boat, noticed 69 illegal immigrants in a boat.

    The officials said there were an Iranian, two Indian, 11 Iraqi, 23 Pakistani, 10 Palestinian and 22 Afghan illegal immigrants, and 3 Greek crew on the boat.

    Stating that the boat was taken to Sıgırcık port, the officials added that investigation into the incident is underway.

    -TURKEY AND EU SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN BRUSSELS
    BRUSSELS - Turkey and the European Union(EU) Symposium, which was organized by the Centre for Studies on Turkey and Konrad Adenauer Foundation, will be held in Brussels on Thursday.

    The international symposium will be organized after the declaration of the Accession Partnership Accord which was prepared by the European Commission for Turkey, and the participants would discuss whether Turkey would meet the prerequisites for the full membership to the EU.

    The economic relations of Turkey and the EU, and the contributions of Turkey to the European Security and Defense Identity(EDSI) will also be discussed in the symposium.

    Experts from Turkey, Germany, and several EU countries, politicians, bureaucrats, and scientist will participate in the symposium.

    Bulent Akarcali, the Deputy Leader of the Motherland Party(ANAP); Onur Oymen, the Permanent Representative of Turkey in NATO; Ozan Ceyhun, the member of the European Parliament; Peter Hintze, the Chairman of the German Christian Democrat CDU/CSU Parties European Working Group; Aydin Sezgin, the General Director of Directorate General of Press and Information; Gunther Rinsche, the Chairman of Konrad Adenauer Foundation; and Faruk Sen, the Chairman of the Center for Studies on Turkey, will participate in the symposium.

    The symposium will end late on Thursday.

    -NINE-MONTH INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION INCREASES 6.3 PERCENT
    ANKARA - The production in the industrial sector increased by 6.3 percent in the first nine months of 2000 compared to figures for the same period last year.

    The State Institute of Statistics (DIE) announced that the production increase in September 2000 was 7 percent.

    The differences between industrial productions in September 1999 and 2000 and between January-September periods in 1999 and 2000 according to the DIE statistics are as follows:
