    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    VISIT FROM MINISTER AYDIN TO TOKYO
    Koray Aydin, Minister of Settlement and Public Works, and Premiership Chief Adviser Ahmet Vefik Alp, will go to Tokyo to hold observations about quake. Aydin and Alp will exchange views with the officials about the administrations in Tokyo and the implementation of the administrations in Turkey.

    GREEN LIGHT TO BAKU-CEYHAN
    The works within the scope of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan crude oil pipeline will start soon. Sources said the selection of companies and the relevant process were underway while the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, BP Amoco and Socar had reached an agreement to start works. Within framework of the agreement reached in the meetings which were held to start the project earlier, the Pipeline Transportation Corp (BOTAS) will start field researches in Turkish territories by next Wednesday as it would be difficult to carry out such researches in winter.

    MILLIYET (LIBERAL)

    BUDGETARY PERFORMANCE IN FIRST SEVEN MONTHS OF 2000
    Finance Minister Sumer Oral said the 2000 year budget implementations put forward a structure which could remove the current interest burden of the budget. Releasing a statement, Oral said that the consolidated budget expenditures had been 27 quadrillion 238 trillion Turkish lira (TL) including 14 quadrillion 256 trillion TL of interest payments in the January-July period of 2000.

    Noting that the budget expenditures excluding interest had been 12 quadrillion 982 trillion TL, Oral said that the budget revenues had been 18 quadrillion 176 trillion TL including 14 quadrillion 373 trillion TL of tax income.

    NO COUNTRY COULD BE FOUND TO SEND FEHRIYE ERDAL
    Belgium can not find a country to send Fehriye Erdal, one of the suspects of assasination on businessmen Ozdemir Sabanci. Belgium earlier released Erdal from prison and placed her under house arrest.

    Officials said Belgian Foreign Ministry continue their efforts to find a country, and defended that their initiatives resulted in negative outcomes.

    Meanwhile Jan Fermon, one of the lawyers of Erdal, accused Interior Ministry being ''insincere,'' and that they did not keep their promises.

    SABAH (LIBERAL)

    DEMIREL TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP TOWARD THE NEW PERIOD OF HIS LIFE IN IZMIR
    Suleyman Demirel, the 9th president, chose Aegean Izmir province to take the first step toward the new period of his political life. Demirel attributes a great importance to Izmir in his political life. ''I will be in Izmir in October,'' Demirel said. Demirel will address a meeting titled ''How Can a Better Administration Be.''

    INDIAN GESTURE TO PREMIER ECEVIT
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit always says he was affected by the phisophy of Tagore, the Famous Indian poet. Ecevit, last April paid a visit to India, which he defined as his ''biggest dream.'' Bhadra Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Ankara, said they attributed great importance to history of relations between Turkey and India. Indian government made a gesture to Prime Minister Ecevit. Bhadra Kumar, who paid a visit to Ecevit's house saw that there was not a book about Mahatma Ghandi, India's national leader, and later gave him books as present.

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    ''POISON'' PROTEST OF GREENPEACE
    Members of International Environment organization Greenpeace came to Aliaga Petkim installations on Friday as a part of their protests carried out against the pollution of the Mediterranean. They hang a sign saying, ''Petkim stop the chlorine.'' Members of Greenpeace pointed out that this environmental disaster should be stopped soon. Nine Greenpeace members were taken into custody in connection with the protest.

    CAY, STATE MINISTER, ''WE WILL PUT OUR SIGNATURE TO THE BALKANS''
    Abdulhaluk Cay, the State Minister, said Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) focused on the projects toward the Balkan countries within the framework of Balkan Stability Pact. Cay staged a news conference in TIKA, and briefed about the projects regarding the Balkan countries. Cay pointed out that Turkey will give priority to the project to improve small and medium scale enterprises system in Albania, Bosnia- Herzegovina, and Macedonia.

    RADIKAL (LEFT)

    ZEUGMA IN KAHTA
    As efforts are underway to save the history in Zeugma, historical ruins were found in Guzelcay Village in Kahta township in Adiyaman province as the dam waters were lessened. Officals of museum and culture directorate said the ruins belonged to Kommagene Kingdom period and Bizantine or Islam period.

    Villagers complained that the officials were not interested in the ruins.

    ERDAL GOES ON HUNGER STRIKE AGAIN
    Lievan Van Mele, the Spokesman of Belgian Interior Ministry, said on Friday that Fehriye Erdal, one of the assailants of businessman Ozdemir Sabanci assassination and a member of illegal extreme leftist DHKP-C organization, went on hunger strike again upon the instruction of her illegal organization. Van Mele noted that the terrorist DHKP-C organization accused the Belgian government of announcing the secret place where Erdal is staying.

    Meanwhile, reliable sources said that the place where Erdal is staying was revealed as one of members of terrorist organization leaked out information to Turkish press.

    YENİ BİNYIL (LIBERAL)

    TURKEY HITS NORTHERN IRAQ
    It was reported that 38 Northern Iraqi civilians died, and 11 others were seriously injured in the recent air operation which Turkey staged on the PKK bases in Northern Iraq. Foreign Ministry initiated an ''investigation, '' regarding the incident which was reported to take place on August 15.

    Members of Iraqi Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), which struggle against the terrorist PKK organization with Turkey, told international news agencies that, Turkish planes bombed the region in Turkey-Iraq-Iran border, and noted that unfortunately civilians points were hit.

    10.64 HECTARES OF FOREST BURNT
    A total of 10.64 hectares of forest were destroyed in forest fires which broke out in various regions of the country on Friday. According the to Forest Ministry's Fire Action Center report, 10.64 hectares of forest were destroyed in 15 fires which broke out in Konya, Mugla, Istanbul, Adana, Denizli, Balikesir, Amasya, Izmir, Isparta, Kutahya, Kahramanmaras, and Antalya.

    TURKIYE (RIGHT)

    SIGNATURE CRISIS CONTINUES
    As the government is insistent on signing of decree with the force of law (KHK) on civil servants, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer continues to be persistent on issuing of the decree as law. In case the decree is returned , the government will convene the Parliament on an extraordinary meeting, and send it to the Presidency again.

    DROUGHT THREAT
    Husnu Yusuf Gokalp, the Agriculture Minister, pointed out the danger throughout the country, and noted, ''the only solution is to use our water sources. The only solution to prevent Turkey from being a desert is not to withdraw the population from Anatolia. He said, ''Anatolia should be cultivated, so that rain would drop on it.''

    Gokalp said, ''there is a possibility of drought in the coming four years, we should not waste our waters.''

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    FOREIGN MINISTRY THANKS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
    The Foreign Ministry thanked international community for its ''unique'' solidarity in the wake of the massive earthquake which hit Marmara Region on August 17, 1999. Releasing a statement to mark the first anniversary of last year's devastating earthquake disaster, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday that more than 90 countries had taken action to contribute to mobilization in Turkey.

    The statement stressed, ''the Turkish people will never forget such a great solidarity of international organizations and non-governmental organizations.''

    [02] LAWYERS OF FEHRIYE ERDAL REJECT THE PROPOSAL OF INTERIOR MINISTRY TO HOSPITALIZE ERDAL

    BRUSSELS- Lawyers of Fehriye Erdal, one of the assailants of businessman Ozdemir Sabanci assassination, on Saturday rejected the proposal of Belgium Interior Ministry to hospitalize Erdal.

    Jan Fermon, one of the lawyers of Erdal, said Erdal would not be send to hospital unless her health condition deteriorates.

    Erdal went on hunger strike again after the secret address she was staying was revealed on Friday.

    Lieven Van Mele, Belgian Interior Ministry Press Spokesman, pointed out that officials of Interior Ministry will convene again and submit a proposal as the lawyers rejected their proposal.

    [03] PLEASING DEVELOPMENT IN EXPORTATION

    GAZIANTEP - Agricultural products, worth of 4,554 million U.S. dollars, were exported to Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) from the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) region in the recent seven months. Also, agricultural products, worth of 26. 193 million U.S. dollars, were exported to Eastern European countries.

    In the same period of last year, exportation, worth of 3.504 million U.S. dollars were made to CIS countries, and exportation worth of 16.738 million U.S. dollars were made to Eastern European countries.

    According to the date of Southeastern Anatolia Exporters Union, grains, and its products, dried fruits, and textile products were exported in January- July 2000 period.

    [04] GUMUSHANE ARTABEL LAKES WAIT FOR PROMOTION

    GUMUSHANE - Artabel lakes in Torul township in the Black Sea Gumushane province, which were declared as natural parks with the decision of Council of Ministers in 1998, wait for promotion.

    Salih Isik, Gumushane Acting Governor, told A.A correspondent that there were around 18 lakes on 5, 850 hectares of field in the region, adding that, ''the region is 60 km away from Gumushane provincial center. There is problem about the roads, yet no works can be made not to spoil the natural balance of this field.''

    Isik said they were exerting efforts to open the region, which is a natural beauty, to tourism.

    [05] INCREASE IN NUMBER OF TOURISTS VISITING TRABZON

    TRABZON- Number of local and foreign tourists, visiting the Black Sea Trabzon province increased in the first seven months of this year. It was reported that there was 57 percent increase when compared with the same period of last year.

    Tourism Provincial Directorate officials said a total of 398, 531 people visited Trabzon in seven months. They said 312, 565 local tourists, 73, 602 western, and 12,363 people from the Commonwealth of Independent States visited the region in this period.

    [06] FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEVASTATING MARMARA QUAKE -FOREIGN MINISTRY: ''COOPERATION EXHIBITED BY TURKEY AND GREECE FOLLOWING THE QUAKE DISASTERS, HAVE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO DIALOGUE PROCESS''

    ANKARA - Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that cooperation exhibited by Turkey and Greece following the massive earthquakes in the two countries, contributed a lot to the dialogue process that was initiated before the quakes.

    Foreign Ministry released a statement in the first anniversary of the devastating Marmara earthquake and recalled that Greek government and non- governmental organizations rushed to the help of Turkey following August 17 quake, adding that, ''may be the only positive thing we experienced following this tragic disaster was that many countries rushed to our help and showed solidarity.''

    Pointing out that Greece had experienced a quake disaster on September 7, 1999, the statement said Turkish government and people also rushed to their help similarly.

    The statement said Turkish and Greek people rushed to the help of each other in the quake disasters, and this showed that friendship feelings prevail between the peoples of the two countries.

    The statement also pointed out that Turkey would continue to exert every kind of effort for the maintenance of this rapproachment and cooperation process.

    [07] FOREST FIRE IN EGIRDIR

    EGIRDIR- A total of three hectares of field was burnt after forest fire which broke out in Egirdir township in Isparta province late on Friday.

    Fire brigades intervened the fire and took it under control in a short time. The fire could be put out totally early on Saturday.

    It was reported that three hectares of forest land was burnt in the fire.

    [08] TOBB CHAIRMAN MIRAS AND TOSYOV CHAIRMAN CELEBI TO STAGE NEWS CONFERENCE ON AUGUST 21

    ANKARA- Fuat Miras, Chairman of Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB), and Isin Celebi, Chairman of Turkish Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Members of Professions and Administrators Foundation (TOSYOV) will stage a news conference on August 21, 2000.

    A written statement issued by TOBB said Miras and Celebi will brief about the series of conferences titled ''Initiative Soul and KOBI's in the New Century,'' which TOBB and TOSYOV will stage throughout Izmir International Fair.

    Problems regarding the implementation of economic program, risk capital, improvement of exportation, and measures to be taken in solution of similar issues will be discussed in conferences that will end on September 10.

    [09] AYTEKIN, ENVIRONMENT MINISTER: ''TURKEY SHOULD IMPROVE ITS OWNS TECHNOLOGY REGARDING REFINING SYSTEM''

    DENIZLI - Fevzi Aytekin, the Environment Minister, said on Saturday that Turkey should improve its own technology regarding refining system.

    Aytekin visited Pamukkale Karahayit Akkoy Sewerage construction and construction of refining installation, which started at the begining of 1998, and which was planned to be concluded next year.

    ''Turkey, which is about to enter the European Union (EU), should improve its own technology regarding the refining system,'' said Aytekin, and called on the industrialists to invest in this issue.

    Aytekin also called on number of installations to be increased and the services to be bettered to increase tourism incomes in the region.

    [10] YILMAZ, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, ATTENDS EXPO-2000 FAIR

    HANNOVER - Mesut Yilmaz, the State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, said on Saturday that, ''those who think they will draw a Europe without Turkey, do not know about the history of Europe, and have no knowledge about European geography.''

    Yilmaz attended Turkey National Day celebration activities, which was staged within the framework of Expo-2000 World Fair in Hannover city of Germany.

    Yilmaz said, ''Turkey has historical and cultural riches,'' and mentioned the efforts in international platform for peace and the efforts exerted by Turkey in this respect. Yilmaz said people of Turkey want their country to integrate with the west and enter to the EU.

    Werner Muller, German Economy and Technology Minister, addressing at the ceremony said they have friendly relations with Turkey.

    Muller said Turkey, which is a tourism country, should provide the ecological balance, as well as economical development.

    [11] 20 FAMILIES RETURN TO THEIR VILLAGE

    BINGOL - A total of 20 families, who had left their villages because of the attacks of the terrorist PKK organization in Boyali village in Adakli township in southeastern Bingol province, returned to their village.

    Those who live in the village left the region after terrorist PKK organization killed two villagers in an attack in 1994. Now, six years passed, and 20 families returned to their village in April with the confidence atmosphere that has been provided.

    The families wait for help from the state for the repair of their village before winter comes.

    [12] ATLAS CARPET FACTORY EXPORTS MACHINE MADE CARPETS WORTH OF 10.9 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS

    KAYSERI - Atlas Carpet Manufacturing Company reflect the traditions of the countries on the products which it exports.

    Mehmet Aykut, Atlas Carpet Manufacturing Company, told A.A correspondent that they export 60 percent of their products, adding that there was a 43 percent increase when last year's exportation and exportation of this year's first seven months are compared.

    Aykut said while producing the machine made carpets, they considered the traditions of the countries they exported their products.

    Aykut said they exported machine made carpets worth of 10.884 million U.S. dollars, to the European Union (EU) member countries, the U.S., United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Russia, Australia, Malaysia, Jordan and Palestine.

    Mehmet Aykut said they were looking for other foreign markets to increase their exportation, and noted that they continue contacts with Israel, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentine.

    [13] YILMAZ, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, IN EXPO-2000 FAIR

    HANNOVER - Mesut Yilmaz, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, said on Saturday that people in Turkey wanted their country to integrate with the west, and also wanted their country to be the member of the European Union (EU). ''Turkey means a cultural richness, dialogue between the cultures, and development of universal values for Europe,'' he noted.

    Addressing the official ceremony of Turkey National Day activities, staged within the framework of Expo-2000 World Fair in Hannover city in Germany, Yilmaz said Expo was a place where peaceful competition takes place in the fields of development and civilization.

    Pointing out that he was pleased that Turkey in its history took place among the developed countries, Yilmaz said, ''I want to stress that I am proud that Turkey played an important role in Expo's history.''

    ''I think we should consider Expo-2000 as an important opportunity,'' Yilmaz said adding that, ''Expo forms an opportunity to become aware of our problems and responsibilities at the begining of a new millenium. We should allow new visions and improve new concepts.''

    ''Humanbeing, nature, and technology is the slogan of Expo,'' Yilmaz pointed out and noted that, ''culture and civilization is the outcome of relations between humanbeing, nature and technology.''

    Stressing that Turkey was rich of history and cultural experiences, Yilmaz said, ''evenmore we have privileges. Is there any other country like Anatolia where synthesis, variety and difference are in all harmony.''

    Yilmaz said, ''those who think they could draw a Europe where Turkey does not exist, don't know about Europe's history and culture, and don't have knowledge about Europe's geography.''

    He said people in Turkey share the same idea: They want their country to integrate with the west, and become a member of the European Union (EU). Turkey means a cultural richness, a dialogue between the cultures and improvement of universal values for Europe.

    Pointing out that globalization have dangers as well as its benefits, Yilmaz said, ''we should develop cultural exchange forms that will enrich us

    mutually.''

    [14] MHP ANKARA PROVINCAL CONGRESS

    ANKARA- Abdurrahman Kucuk, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Secretary General, said on Saturday that if the politicians act in principle, solutions could be found to the problems of Turkey and that struggle can be made against corruption.

    MHP Ankara Provincial Chairmanship 6th Regular Congress convened. Speaking at the Congress, Kucuk said although Turkey has every kind of facilities, solutions could not be found to the problems because of daily policies. Kucuk said they believed that solutions could be found to the problems with the understanding of long term policies.

    Pointing out that many laws were issued in the Parliament in this period, Kucuk said compromising attitude of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), played an important role in this respect. Kucuk stressed that they would not allow those who want to spoil the unity of the country, and the game of those who created the impression that, ''there is a gap in the government, '' would be in vain.

    Meanwhile, Devlet Bahceli, the State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, sent a message to the congress and said Turkey should soon get rid of vicious conflicts, and the distorted mentalities who want to make politics by basing on religious and ethnical differences. In his message Bahceli said understanding of a consistent and clean policy should be settled.

    ''Such a political basis would absolutely be one of the pre-conditions of our country to improve in every field. MHP, being a party which adopted these goals and methods, will continue to develop by overcoming every kind of problems. Unity and future of great Turkish nation are the only right and meaningful things for us.''

    [15] OIL PRODUCTION IN SOUTHEASTERN ADIYAMAN PROVINCE

    ADIYAMAN - Turkish Petroleum Corp (TPAO)

    produced 20,000 barrels of crude oil in 170 wells in 16 fields in southeastern Adiyaman province.

    The report which TPAO submitted to Provincial Coordination Committee, said the oil produced in Adiyaman, was pumped to Saril sation with pipeline, and later transfered to Batman-Dortyol main oil line.

    The report said the 20,000 barrels of oil, that was produced in Adiyaman per day, formed 50 percent of TPAO's production in Turkey.
