The book which is written by Kamal Guran, a retired member of the Religious Affairs Higher Council of the Foundation, also says that monogamy sometimes leads people to immoral practices and claims that getting married to more than one woman creates relief on individuals as well as the society. The book also includes statements againsts family planning and bans Muslim women from getting married to Jewish or Christian men. TURKISH AND ISRAELI FORCES START JOINT MILITARY TRAINING MILLIYET (LIBERAL)SEZER ASKS FOR APPOINTMENT FROM CLINTONAfter ''warming up'' to foreign politics with his trips to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Azerbaijan, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer will adress to the world leaders at the U.N. Millennium Summit in New York on September 4-8. Sezer who will represent Turkey at the summit asked for an appointment from U.S. President Bill Clinton who will also join the meeting. Sezer is expected to hold meetings also with the leaders of western countries and Turkish republics. PISKINSUT TO SEEK FOR HUMAN RIGHT IN AUSTRALIA SABAH (LIBERAL)ANKARA WARNED ABOUT SPIESJalal Talabani who visited Ankara on July 25, presented government officials a list of Saddam's women spies who are in Ankara to collect information. Saddam's spies are former belly dancers and their mission is to kill leaders of anti-Saddam groups. National Intelligence Agency (MIT) has intensified measures in Ankara and Istanbul. The Foreign Ministry also warned London and Washington, D.C.. CONSTRUCTION OF NATURAL GAS PIPELINES CONTINUES CUMHURIYET (LEFT)EROGLU GIVES INThe Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) government is going to resign after the clear negative position of Ankara which agreed with TRNC President Rauf Denktas on the ''presidency system''. After the campaigns against him increased, TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu sent a comprehensive letter to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit. Eroglu who explained the economic measures that the TRNC government is planning to take and requested an appointment which has not received a response from the Prime Minister yet. When the negative position of Ankara towards the governing coalition in the TRNC became clear, partners of the coalition decided that their government came to an end. The Communal Liberation Party (TKP), a partner of the coalition, thinks that resignation after August 1 is inevitable. PRESIDENCY SYSTEM CAN COME ONLY WITH COUP RADIKAL (LEFT)GRATUITY TO CUT ARMHuseyin Mujdeci who is living in southeastern Siverek township hit a high- voltage cable while he was riding a horse when he was fifteen years old. In the hospital, his left arm was cut. His family brought a suit against the Turkish Electricity Distribution Corp (TEDAS). After twelve years, the court decided to punish TEDAS with only 30 million TL compensation to the family. THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT TURKEYS YENI BINYIL (LIBERAL)TEN PERCENT TENSIONThe tension which started when Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit scolded the Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions (DISK) Chairman is escalating. Labor and Social Security Minister Yasar Okuyan became very angry with former DISK Chairman and Democratic Left Party (DYP) deputy Ridvan Budak who had said that Okuyan was pissing at the ''wall of a mosque'' when he annuled the collective agreement right of ten labor unions. Okuyan said that Budak was behaving rudely, and that more than ten labor unions would be closed if they were investigated. In accordance with the laws, the labor union does not have the right of collective agreement if the number of its members is less than ten percent of the workers in its labor branch. GALATASARAY TO BE AWARDED WITH FIVE MILLION U.S. DOLLARS TURKIYE (RIGHT)SECRET RICH PEOPLENine people including a woman declined to be identified in the top 100 income tax payers. The amount of income tax those people will pay reaches 4.5 trillion Turkish lira (TL). One of these people who came eighth in the list with 1 trillion 831.6 billion TL income tax left behind businessmen Halis Toprak and Sakip Sabanci. JUSTICE MINISTER'S CONFESSION ABOUT PRISON TARGET FOR TOURISM IS 20 BILLION U.S. DOLLARS ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)STATE MINISTER CAY FROM MHP:''NO CHANGES SHOULD BE MADE FORERBAKAN'' State Minister Abdulhaluk Cay from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) said that the one year prison sentence of Necmettin Erbakan, the leader of the outlawed Welfare Party (RP), should not be altered. Speaking in favour of Article 312, Cay said Erbakan's punishment should not be made any lighter due to his age. ''People's age is not considered when they become leaders or ministers. Therefore, someone who was given the responsibility to become a prime minister should be aware of his responsibility and speak accordingly,'' he said. [02] FIRE DESTROYES 30 HECTARES OF FOREST IN KONYAKONYA - The fire which broke out in Konya's Seydisehir township was brought under control on Sunday evening.Konya governor Ahmet Kayhan told A.A correstpondent that 30 hectares of forest land was completely destroyed in the fire. Two helicopters and one plane were sent from Antalya to join the efforts to put out the fire. The fire is thought to have been caused by picnicers. [03] 53 ACRES OF FORESTED LAND BURNT IN DERBENTDERBENT - The forest fire which broke out near Degis village in Derbent township of central Konya province was put out late on Sunday.Sources said that the reason for the forest fire had not been known yet. Fire-fighting teams and residents took the fire under control in two hours. Officials said that a total of 53 acres of forested land had been burnt down to ashes, and cooling efforts were under way. [04] HOUR BY HOUR TURKISH ECONOMYANKARA - In one hour, Turkey is producing 48 cars, 931 televisions, 64,000 liters of raki and beer, and 13.8 tons of cigarettes.According to the data compiled from the State Statistics Institute (DIE) and State Planning Institute, in the first six months, the state spent 131 trillion 450 billion TL and 5 trillion 477 billion TL in one hour. On the other hand, the state's daily and hourly income was 86 trillion 250 billion TL and 3 trillion 593 billion TL respectively. The state spent an average of 3 trillion 15 billion TL for interests, 1 trillion 9 billion TL for its personnel and 426 billion TL for social security. Its hourly tax income was 2 trillion 850 billion TL. Turkish people spent 1 trillion 32 billion TL using their credit cards in one hour which totalled up to 24 trillion 772 billion TL in one day. In the first five months, Turkey's export was worth of 3.1 million U.S. dollars in one hour and import was worth of 5.6 million U.S. dollars. Every hour, an average of 786 tourists entered Turkey in the first five months. Turkey produced 341 tons of coal, 13.8 tons of cigarettes, 64,000 liters of raki and beer, 3,196 tons of cement and 1,515 tons of liquid steel in one hour. Every hour, 33 cars, 283 refrigerators, 126 washing machines, and 979 televisions were produced and people bought 48 cars, 249 refrigerators, 156 washing machines and 931 televisions. In one hour, Turkey produced 274 tons of gas and 674 tons of motor oil and an average of nine dwellings were built in the country. [05] PROFILE OF EXPORTS FROM GAP REGIONGAZIANTEP - The Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) region exported 272 million 822 thousand U.S. dollars of agricultural, animal and industrial products to 91 countries in first half of 2000.The GAP region had exported 264 million 792 thousand U.S. dollars goods to 90 countries in the period of 1999. Speaking to the A.A correspondent, Southeastern Anatolia Exporters' Unions Chairman Abdulkadir Cikmaz said that exports of textiles increased 10 percent to 154 million 373 thousand U.S. dollars and exports of fresh fruits and vegetables and industrial products rose 15 percent to 51 million 109 thousand U.S. dollars while exports of grain-creals decreased 4 percent to 45 million 229 thousand U.S. dollars, exports of dried fruits and vegetables dropped 10 percent to 21 million 12 thousand U.S. dollars and exports of animal products reduced 89 percent to 1 million 99 thousand U.S. dollars. Cikmaz said Irag, Italy and Syria became the countries where the goods were mostly exported, and synthetic thread, carpets and cotton thread became the mostly exported products. Cikmaz said that they exported 96 million 318 thousand U.S. dollars goods to Europe, 67 million 832 thousand U.S. dollars products to Middle East, 15 million 134 thousand U.S. dollars goods to American continent countries, 17 million 760 thousand U.S. dollars goods to turkish Republics, 3 million 904 thousand U.S. dollars products to Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, 6 million 308 thousand U.S. dollars products to Africa, 2 million 122 thousand U.S. dollars goods to Asia, and 63 million 444 thousand U.S. dollars products to other countries and free areas in first half of 2000. Cikmaz said they couldn't export products to Kenya, Ireland, Oman, Belarus, Benin, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ivory Coasts, Gambia, Guinea, Sierre Leone, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka in first six months of the year. Cikmaz added thay they entered the markets of Sudan, Iceland, Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia, Gabon, Ghana, Congo, Libya, Senegal, Brazil, El Salvador, Venezuela, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and that they exported 916 thousand U.S. dollars goods to these markets in the first half of 2000. [06] FIRE BURNS DOWN 20 HOUSES ON VALLEY IN ARTVINARTVIN - The fire which broke out in Kiravat valley of Artvin's Yusufeli township on Sunday night completely destroyed 20 houses on the valley.Artvin governor Selahattin Akyurt said no people or animal died in the fire but the houses were completely burnt down. He said the cause of the fire is not yet known. The fire which lasted for three and a half hours was put out by the joint efforst of Forest Directorate's teams and gendarme forces before it spreaded to the forest area. [07] NEW GENERATION TANKS SUPPLY PROJECTANKARA - After selection of the companies for strike helicopter tender, the countdown for the one thousand tanks joint supply project starts.In accordance with the bids of the five companies submitted to the Defense Industry Undersecretariat (SSM), the firing trials which started in Sereflikochisar township of Tokat on May 30 ended on July 28. After the three different trial stages, evaluation of the bids which were submitted on January 31, 2000 will be made at the SSM which will later convey its decision to the SSM Executive Committee. The decision for final selection of the company for the 250-pieces first part of new generation tanks will be taken by the SSM Executive Committe that is expected to convene in August. The joint production of tanks will be financed by the SSM fund sources. Names of companies and the model of tanks they are offering are as follows: 1. Iveco-Oto Brieda (Italy) Model: CI Ariete 2. General Dynamic (U.S.) Model: MA2 Abrams [08] EXCAVATIONS IN IKIZTEPE RUINS TO RESUME ON TUESDAYSAMSUN - This year's excavation stage at the Ikiztepe ruins in Bafra township of Black Sea Samsun province will start on Tuesday.Sources said on Monday that Ikiztepe ruins had been discovered by archaeologists who were carrying out excavations at Dundartepe ruins in Samsun in 1940. The excavations at the Ikiztepe ruins started in 1974, and this year's excavations would last almost 1.5 months, sources said. A total of 8,500 historical and ethnographic artifacts have been unearthed during excavations at Ikiztepe until today. Among them, there is the skull of a person who had underwent a brain surgery almost 4.500 years ago. These findings are being exhibited at the Samsun Archaeology Museum. [09] TEMPERATURES TO DROP 10 TO 15 DEGREES ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAYANKARA - Temperatures will decrease 10 to 15 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday and it will drop to seasonal averages by next weekend.State Meteorology Works announced that showers which will start in Marmara region will later shift to Black Sea and northern parts of Central Anatolia. Latest measurements show that the temperatures will start dropping in Marmara region on Monday and it will be felt in all regions on Tuesday. Below is the expected temperatures in Celcius in some main cities on Tuesday and Wednesday. CITY 01.08.2000 02.08.2000 Experts said that the extreme heat which has been affecting Turkey since July 13 was of North African origin. The temperatures further increased due to another hot weather wave which came from Central Mediterranean. [10] U.N. MISSION FOR KOSOVO CHAIRMAN KOUCHNER IN ANKARAANKARA - Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister said on Monday that the happiness of Kosovo is the concern and the aim of Turkey.Issuing a statement during his meeting with the U.N. Mission for Kosovo Chairman Bernard Kouchner, Cem said that ''Kosovo is the history and today of Turkey. The prosperity of all peoples living in Kosovo is very important for Turkey. As a result of this importance, Turkey brought its economic and military contribution to Kosovo by the support of its people.'' Cem noted that the Turkish minority living in Kosovo has some problems, adding they will take up these problems with Kouchner and the possible contributions of Turkey to these problems. Kouchner thanked Turkey for the support it extended to the reconstruction of Kosovo. Kouchner stated that their basic mission is to implement the U.N. Security Council Resolution No. 1244, adding a great progress was recorded in Kosovo; however, there are still some difficulties. Kouchner noted that in his meeting with Cem, they will take up the problems of the Turkish society and the perspective of the coming local elections. [11] ANTIQUE BIBLE HANDED OVER TO HAGIA SOFIA MUSEUMANKARA - Antique Bible which was confiscated by Iskenderun security forces in 1999, was handed over to Istanbul's Hagia Sofia Museum on Monday.Culture Minister Istemihan Talay thanked the Interior Ministry for its initiatives to prevent the smuggling of cultural heritage abroad and Iskenderun security forces for their efforts in confiscating the antique bible. The manuscript bible was writting in former Abyssinian language and included the prayers of Prophet David. [12] GENDARME FORCES CAPTURE 99 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN EDIRNEEDIRNE - Gendarme forces captured 99 illegal immigrants in northwestern Edirne province in two days.Sources said on Monday that gendarme forces captured 99 illegal immigrants, including Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans, Palestinians, Syrians, and Tunisians in Bucakdoganca village and Ipsala and Meric townships. The sources noted that the captured people wanted to illegally go to European countries. The illegal immigrants were handed over to Edirne Police Organization to be deported, the sources added. [13] PROXIMITY TALKS ON CYPRUS -TRNC PRESIDENT DENKTAS: ''WE EXPECT U.N. TO PRESENT ITS VIEWS''GENEVA - Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Monday that they expected the U.N. to present its views to the concerned sides.Denktas said that contacts continue within the framework of the third round of proximity talks held in Geneva city of Switzerland. The sides responded to the views presented by Alvaro de Soto, the Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary General to Cyprus in the previous stage, said Denktas. ''Both sides presented their views about the latest situation and defended themselves. Now, they work on the points that could be brought together. I suppose they will put forward their own views today or tomorrow,'' said Denktas. Denktas pointed out that the TRNC team worked very well in Geneva and told everything that could be said, adding he hoped all the realities of Cyprus would be taken into consideration. Responding to questions about the efforts of the U.S. to speed up the process, Denktas said that ''Cyprus issue is not indexed to 'others.' They were saying that the U.S. President Bill Clinton would solve the issue before the elections. We wish the solution of the issue without letting one side to claim that it is the government of the Cyprus government. We expect a change in the Greek Cypriot side's approach.'' The Greek Cypriot side always keeps the membership to the European Union (EU) on its agenda, said Denktas and noted that TRNC thinks that this issue should come to the agenda after the solution of the Cyprus question. TRNC does not delay the solution, said Denktas and noted that ''we explain our own position. They think we are right. But they also want us to be rapid. We want a solution, but this does not mean that we can accept the unilateral Greek Cypriot demands. Greece encourages the Greek Cypriot side about this issue.'' When journalists asked him whether the Americans want to set up a parallelism between Bosnia and Cyprus or not, Denktas said that ''if the military force withdraws from Bosnia today, blood will shed there. I hope they will take lessons from Bosnia. After a possible solution, Turkish and Greek soldiers will remain on the island. This basic principle was accepted. Guarantors and soldiers should be on Cyprus. Turkey can't give up Cyprus which is geopolitically important for itself and for its southern coasts.'' De Soto is expected to come together with the sides this afternoon or Tuesday. [14] SEZER APPOINTS RECTORS TO 22 UNIVERSITIESANKARA - President Ahmet Necdet Sezer appointed rectors to 22 universities on Monday.Prof. Dr. Emin Alıcı, who won the highest number of votes in the election held in Dokuz Eylul University, was appointed as the Rector.
