HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

FIRST FLAG RAISED AGAINST ERBAKAN
Revolution in the Virtue Party (FP). Although Abdullah Gul, FP deputy from Istanbul, did not get permission from Necmettin Erbakan, the leader of the banned Welfare Party (RP), and he ran his candidacy for the FP leadership. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former Istanbul Mayor who was also banned from politics, fully supports Gul's candidacy. Bulent Arinc and Abdullatif Sener, the FP deputies who had earlier run their candidacies for leadership, said that they withdraw from being a candidate and support Gul.

PRIVATIZATION INITIATIVES LAUNCHED FOR NINE INSTITUTIONS
Yuksel Yalova, the State Minister for privatization, said that they launched privatization initiatives for nine enterprises. Yalova noted that the privatization package which was announced on Wednesday was the first large-scale privatization implementation. Staging a press conference with Privatization Administration Board Chairman Ugur Bayar, Yalova said they were also planning to offer companies and enterprises of many sectors from textiles to fertilizer, from tourism to port and marina management and from agricultural machines to paper sector, to the interests of investors in May 2000.

NO TIME TO TAKE BRIBES
Upon increasing complaints, Kadir Boy, head of the financial department of Istanbul, started a war against bribery. They determined the time needed for tax procedures at tax offices. The lists showing which procedure will take how many minutes will be hung in the entrances of tax offices. If a tax officer exceeds the time given to him during tax collecting procedures, there will be an investigation to find out what caused the delay. According what is found out, the tax officer will be given disciplinary punishment or he could even lose his job. Tax officers are uncomfortable with the new model aimed to prevent bribery.

PRODUCTION TO CONTINUE
The industrial production increased 4.2 percent in January 2000 when compared with the figures of the same period in January 1999. The textile production climbed 20.5 percent in January while the annual increase in the ready-made cloth sector was 39.3 percent. The textile and automotive production increased the most in the mentioned period.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT SUBMITTED TO PARLIAMENT
A total of 327 deputies, including 135 deputies of the Democratic Left Party (DSP), 123 deputies of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and 69 deputies of the Motherland Party (ANAP), signed the proposal for an amendment in the Article 101 of the Constitution regarding the term in office of the president. 253 deputies, including 110 DSP deputies, 89 MHP deputies, and 54 ANAP deputies, signed the proposal which foresees an amendment in the Article 69 of the Constitution that arranges the principles that the political parties should abide by. 243 deputies, including 110 DSP deputies, 89 MHP deputies, and 44 ANAP deputies, signed the proposal which envisages an amendment in the Article 86 of the Constitution regarding the personnel rights of the deputies.

WOMEN'S VOICE
More than 2,000 women convened in front of Perpa of Istanbul and walked till Sisli Abide-i Hurriyet Square. The women, who were shouting slogans as saying, ''no to poverty, violence, pressure'', opened banners writing, ''life is meaningful with women.'' The security forces dispersed nearly 50 women who convened in central Konya province while the Diyarbakir police did not permit women to stage a demonstration. The Gaziantep police took into custody Serpil Dagdemir, the spokesman of the Gaziantep Democratic Women Platform, as she wanted to release a press statement. Women from nearly 30 organizations, walked in Sincan township of Ankara. The women carried banners writing, ''equality in education and administration'', ''hand in hand for democracy'', ''we want equality at home, work and education'', and ''our women should not hide their faces with veil. Thus, they can see the world-Ataturk.''

KING ABDULLAH OF JORDAN INVITES TURKISH INVESTORS TO HIS COUNTRY
President Suleyman Demirel and King Abdullah of Jordan participated in the Foreign Economic Relations Council (DEIK) meeting. King Abdullah said that they will rapidly launch privatization initiatives in various sectors in Jordan, especially in water and high technology. King Abdullah invited the Turkish investors to his country.

EMERGENCY HOSPITAL TO DUZCE
The Duzce Emergency Aid Hospital which was constructed by the German Technical Cooperation Agency was opened. The Duzce Emergency Aid Hospital has 71 beds. The hospital costed 750,000 German Marks. This amount was met from the 1.5 million German mark assistance which was allocated to the German Technical Cooperation Agency by the German Foreign Ministry and German Economic Cooperation Ministry to buy medical equipment, tents, and basic needs.

''INFLATION WILL DECREASE''
Ersin Ozince, the Chairman of the Union of Turkish Banks, said that the inflation in Turkey will decrease to 20-30 percent. Ozince, who is in Cairo to participate in the ''Third Mediterranean Development Conference'', noted that the inflation rate will start to decrease. ''International economists and I believe that the inflation will decrease even if Turkey faces with bad economic conditions,'' said Ozince. Ozince stated that it is easy to decrease the inflation to 20-30 percent. Ozince added, ''but it has not been that easy to further decrease the inflation from that rate in other parts of the world.''

WOMEN GATHER IN SQUARES
Turkish women celebrated World Women's Day in open air meetings in four corners of Turkey where they protested sexual violence and poverty. However, the most creative protest of March 3 came from a man. A government worker employed at Canakkale Municipality protested male supremacy and sexual violence against women by wearing a skirt.

HIGH COST FOR OIL
Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) caused the oil prices to increase 400 percent in one year by limiting the production of crude oil. If OPEC doesn't drop prices, Turkey will have to pay an additional cost of 2,5 billion U.S. dollars in 2000. OPEC's decision will become clear at the meeting which will be held in Vienna on March 27.
