[04] HURRIYET (LIBERAL) - ------------------ DISRESPECTFULNESS TO 20,000
DEAD PEOPLE The students wearing headscarves who convened at tha Marmara
University of Istanbul, opened a banner writing ''Wasn't 7.4 Enough?'',
behaving disrespectfully to 20,000 people who died in the devastating quake
in August. The students interpreted the quake as ''those who are not
Moslems were punished'' in the banners.
[05] ERSUMER, ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES MINISTER, IN ASKABAD Cumhur
Ersumer, the Energy and Natural Resources Minister, said that the
consortium for the Turkmenistan Natural Gas project passing through Caspian
Sea said that the finance works will be completed in 2000, the construction
will start in 2001, and the pipeline can reach Turkish border no later than
2002. Stressing that the consortium is composed of General Electric Capital,
Bechtel Construction Group and Shell, Ersumer stated that the efforts
regarding the production, are carried out by the Shell company.
[06] MILLIYET (LIBERAL) - ----------------- MEDISH:''TURKEY IS THE KEY
COUNTRY OF THE REGION IN RESPECT OF ECONOMY AND POLITICS'' Mark Medish, the
U.S. Assistant Secretary of Treasury, said that Turkey is the key country
of Eurosia in respect of economy and politics. Speaking in the Second
Eurosia Economy Summit held in Istanbul, Medish referred to the importance
of Turkey in Eurosia and noted that she is in the middle of a significant
energy path and economic region. Noting that they support Turkish
government's working together with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in
struggling against inflation, Medish stated that the new government has a
positive image by its determined attitudes.
[07] A TOTAL OF 36 TERRORISTS KILLED WHILE 15 OTHERS SURRENDER A total of
36 terrorists were killed in the clashes between the security forces and
the terrorist in eastern Bitlis, Tunceli, and Van provinces and
southeastern Batman province. A total of 15 terrorists surrendered to the
security forces in Catak county of Van province while two terrorists were
captured in Gevas county of Van. Meanwhile, a Turkish soldier died during
the operations.
[08] SABAH (LIBERAL) - -------------- ONAL: ''ANOTHER AGREEMENT OTHER THAN
THE STAND-BY AGREEMENT, CAN BE SIGNED WITH IMF'' Recep Onal, the State
Minister Responsible for Treasury, said that another agreement other than
the Stand-By agreement can be signed with the International Monetary Fund
(IMF). Onal recalled that there were four types of agreements with the IMF
in accordance with the status of the Fund, and added that Turkey did not
need a direct monetary support from the IMF.
[09] 34TH WORLD FREE-STYLE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS START The 34th World
Free-Style Wrestling Championships started in Ankara. A total of 302
wrestlers from 54 countries participate in the championships. Turkish
wrestlers won two of the five matches held in the first day of the
championships. Mevlana Kulac, Adem Bereket, and Kasif Sakiroglu beat their
opponents while Mehmet Yozgat was defeated.
[10] CUMHURIYET (LEFT) - ---------------- FRENCH COURT REJECTS CAKICI'S
REQUEST FOR HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON The Aix-En Provence Court of Appeals
rejected notorious mafia boss Alaattin Cakici's request for his conditional-
release from prison ''till the completion of the process concerning the
extradition procedure.'' Speaking to reporters following the hearing, Can
Dogancan, the Turkish lawyer of Cakici, said the process of extradition
took long, and the Court couldn't reject the next request for Cakici's
release from prison.
[11] DEMIR, CHAIRMAN OF RED CRESCENT, RESIGNS FROM HIS OFFICE Kemal Demir,
the Chairman of the Red Crescent, resigned from his post on Thursday.
Staging a press conference, Demir said that he resigned from his post with
the aim to no longer damage the reputation of the Red Crescent. Prof. Dr.
Yuksel Bozer, member of the Central Administrative Council, was appointed
as the new Chairman of the Red Crescent.
[12] RADIKAL (LEFT) - --------------- OFFICIAL SHIELD TO GULEN It was
revealed that Fethullah Gulen, against whom an interrogation for
fundamentalist activities was launched, was taken under the protection of
the state in 1996. The protection is also valid in the U.S. where Gulen is
receiving medical treatment by the consent of the Interior Ministry.
[13] SCHOOLS IN KOCAELI TO BE OPENED ON OCTOBER 11, 1999 The schools in
Kocaeli province will be opened on October 11, 1999. Metin Bostancioglu,
the National Education Minister, said that they examined the schools and
that the students of the schools which cannot be used, will be transfered
to other schools. Bostancioglu added that some students will be educated in
the tents.
[14] TÜRKİYE (RIGHT) - ---------------- ECEVIT: ''FULL MEMBERSHIP TO THE EU
IS OUR NATURAL RIGHT, BUT WE CANNOT JEOPARDIZE OUR NATIONAL UNITY'' Prime
Minister Bulent Ecevit said, ''full membership to the European Union (EU)
is our natural right, but we cannot jeopardize our national unity for the
sake of the EU membership.'' Addressing the group meeting of the DSP, Prime
Minister Ecevit referred to his visit to the U.S., and noted that the U.S.
Senate and the House of Representatives have assumed a positive attitude
towards Turkey except for two senators who are active members of the Greek
Cypriot lobby.
[15] CAKICI'S REQUEST FOR HIS RELEASE FROM PRISON, REJECTED The Aix-En
Provence Court of Appeals rejected notorious mafia boss Alaattin Cakici's
request for his conditional-release from prison ''till the completion of
the process concerning the extradition procedure''. Requesting his
extradition to Turkey in the hearing, Cakici said he thanked to the court
even if it accepted or rejected his request.
[16] ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE) - -------------------- PLEASING RESIGNATION Kemal
Demir, the Chairman of the Red Crescent, resigned from his post 52 days
after the earthquake disaster. Prof. Dr. Yuksel Bozer, member of the
Central Administrative Council, was appointed as the new Chairman of the
Red Crescent. Pro. Dr. Bozer said that they hope to improve the reputation
of the Red Crescent.
[17] AKTAS SEQUESTRATED The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources
sequestrated management of Aktas Electricity Trade Inc. as of Wednesday
midnight. A 16-member commission appointed by the Ministry, started works
at the Aktas's General Directorate. Osman Ilhan from the Ministry of Energy
told reporters that they did not take over the company's management, but
only were inspecting it.
[18] TOURISTIC BED CAPACITY OF SOUTHERN ANTALYA PROVINCE INCREASED BY 15
TIMES IN 15 YEARS
[19] ANTALYA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The touristic bed capacity of southern Antalya
province increased by 15 times in 15 years; it was reported on Friday. The
Antalya Provincial Tourism Directorate officials told A.A correspondent
that the touristic bed capacity of the region exceeded 145,849 as of
September 30, 1999. Recalling that this figure was nearly 8,000 in 1985,
the officials said that only Kemer county of Antalya have a bed capacity of
40,000. Emphasizing that there are more than 37,000 beds in 58 holiday
resorts in Antalya and its counties, the officials noted that the number of
five-star hotels exceeded 50 and the bed capacity of these hotels are
nearly 32,000. Stressing that a total of 808 people became tourist guides
by the Professional Tourist Guide courses given in Antalya, the officials
stated that 303 of them speak German, 228 of them speak British, 57 of them
speak French, and 220 of them speak other languages. The officials added
that the demand for the tourist guides speaking Scandinavian languages,
Russian, and Hebraic increased in the recent years. Noting that the number
of the travelling agencies in Antalya and its counties reached 688, the
statement said that 220 of these travelling agencies are based in Antalya
and the rest serves in Alanya, Kas, Kemer, and Manavgat counties.
[20] THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EXCAVATIONS OF CENTURY IN PATARA
[21] ANTALYA, Oct 8 (A.A) - Excavations in ancient Patara city near Kas
county of southern Antalya province, continued, it was reported on
Thursday. Prof. Dr. Fahri Isik, the Chairman of the Archaelogoy Department
of the University of Mediterranean, who leads the excavations in Patara,
said that the road guidance monument showing the map of Lycia, was composed
of blocks of Stadiasmos, but 10 blocks were under water. Noting that swamp
filled the city center of Patara in the 16th century when Esen Stream
overflew, Prof. Dr. Isik said, ''5.5-metre-high road guidance monument was
located in the square in the harbour in Patara which was one of the most
active trade centers of the time. Foreigners visiting Patara, would use
Stadiasmos as a map of Lycia. We could not unearth whole of Stadiasmos as a
result of the swamp.'' Stressing that the city of Trimmili which was
mentioned in the monument, was an unknown city to them, Isik quoted
Herodotus, prominent Greek historian, as saying that Lycians were
introducing themselves as Trimmilians. Prof. Dr. Isik said, ''People who
had come to Trimmili from Crete in B.C. 3rd century, settled in the region,
and established Patara. With the harbour, Patara became a trade center.''
Recalling that especially the city center of Patara remained under water,
Prof. Dr. Isik said, ''We have launched the necessary initiatives regarded
with the issue. But the method which will be used to empty water, is very
expensive.'' Describing Stadiasmos as the find of the century, Prof. Dr.
Isik noted, ''We are continuing exacavations in a dry hill. I think that we
have discovered the early settlement period's traces in the hill. We have
unearthed a piece of handle. Prof. Dr. Refik Duru from the University of
Istanbul, examined the piece, and said that it belonged to the very early
periods. Our excavations will continue next year.'' Noting that they were
carrying out the cleaning works at the ancient Patara theatre in
cooperation with the Obakoy Municipality, Prof. Dr. Isik said that the
stage door of the three-story theatre was the most magnificent stage door
in Anatolia.
[22] PRIME MINISTRY CRISIS MANAGEMENT CENTER ANNOUNCES DEATH TOLL AS 15,845
[23] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The Prime Ministry Crisis Management Center
announced death toll as 15,845 as of 11:00 local time on Friday in the wake
of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake which devastated Marmara Region on August
17. A total of 43,953 people were injured in the quake. Officials at the
Prime Ministry Crisis Management Center told the A.A correspondent that a
total of 112,268 tents have been erected in 121 tent-sites so far. Works to
haul away rubble of 4,099 collapsed buildings were finalized, and 1,114
buildings which were seriously damaged in the quake, were demolished. A
total of 66,441 dwellings and 10,901 business places were seriously damaged,
and a total of 80,160 dwellings and 9,712 business places were slightly
damaged while a total of 67,242 dwellings and 9,927 business places were
moderately damaged. Construction of prefabricated houses is continuing in
the disaster zone. Meanwhile, a total of 68 trillion 274 billion 843
million Turkish Liras in the bank account opened at the Ziraat Bank. A
total of 18 trillion Turkish Liras were allocated to the Natural Disaster
Fund, and 5 trillion 100 billion Turkish Liras were allocated to the
Kocaeli Logistics Base.
[24] TURKISH-GREEK BUSINESS COUNCIL TO RESTART ACTIVITIES
[25] ISTANBUL, October 8 (A.A) - Business relations between Turkish and
Greek businessmen which were frozen during the Ocalan crisis are being
restored. Turkish-Greek Business Council's Executive Committee will gather
in Athens on October 12. The move was initiated by the Greek side. Turkey
will have a high level representation in the two day meeting. Turkish
delegation headed by Sarik Tara will be consisted of the Executive Council
members; Yavuz Zeytinoglu, Meral Gezgin Eris, Aldo Kaslowki, Selim Egeli,
Asaf Guneri, Tevfik Bilgen, Leyla Cagatay Ustel, Burhan Karacam, and Mehmet
Ali Neyzi. The Executive Council is expected to form working groups on
banking and tourism at the meeting. The Black Sea Economic Cooperation
Conference will also be organized by Athens Trade and Industry Chamber in
the same days. Turkish businessmen will also express their opinions at the
conference. Meral Gezgin Eris will speak about Black Sea Economic
Cooperation and EU relations. Sarik Tara, the President of Turkish-Greek
Business Council will explain foreign investments while Aldo Kaslowski will
focus on business circles in the world. Sarik Tara told A.A they they were
optimistic about developing business relations with Greece. Turkish-Greek
Business Council froze its activities after the head of the terrorist
organization, Ocalan was found in the Greek Embassy in Kenya. Following the
incident, Rahmi Koc, the President of the Council had resigned. Taking
strength from the recovering Turkish-Greek relations following the quake
disaster, business circles in both Turkey and Greece expressed their
willingness to revive business relations which will be for the benefit of
both sides.
[26] TURKISH BUSINESSMEN TO GO TO ATHENS
[27] ISTANBUL, October 8 (A.A) - Nihat Gokyigit, member of Foreign Economic
Relations Council and Black Sea Economic Cooperation, said on Friday that
Turkish Greek Business Council's Executive Board will gather on October 12
and 13 in Athens. Gokyigit said they were optimistic about restoring frozen
relations between Turkey and Greece. For the first time political relations
are recovering between Turkey and Greece, Gokyigit noted and said that
economic cooperation would speed up the recovery in political relations.
''Turkey is right in the center of Black Sea Economic Cooperation and is
the biggest market in the region. Greece is in the EU. Considering this
geography, development of relations is good for both sides,'' he explained.
''There will be business contacts between Turkish and Greek businessmen
during the visit in Athens. There are business opportunities in industry,
tourism, energy, and sea transport. We will discuss all these,'' Gokyigit
said.
[28] TURKEY'S EXPORTS IN FIRST THREE QUARTERS
[29] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The negative effect of economic crisis in Russia
on Turkey's exports was removed in September, it was reported on Friday.
The Foreign Trade Undersecretariat (DTM) issued a report evaluating the
exports in the first nine months of the year. According to the report,
especially the steel-iron sector was affected by the Asia crisis, and
generally all of the sectors were affected by the Russia crisis. Although
the negative effect of the Russia crisis on the exports of steel-iron has
been reducing since April 1999, this negative effect continued in August
1999. Besides, the earthquake also badly affected the exports in August.
According to the figures recorded by the Exporters' Unions, the exports to
Russia increased 27.7 percent to 221 million U.S. dollars in September. The
DTM report mentioned that the negative effects of the crises on exports
also continued in the first seven months of 1999. When the steel-iron and
Russia are not considered, the State Institute of Statistics (DIE) data
shows that despite the 9.5 percent decrease in exports in January 1999,
there was a 16.3 percent increase. The exports reduced 0.5 percent in March
while they increased 4.6 percent in April. The declining trend in exports
continued in the following months but it was below the rate in early 1999.
After the high-rate decreases in February and March, the exports of steel-
iron are now at the level of 1998. Except January, May, and June 1999, the
exports to the European Union (EU) countries and the European Free Trade
Area (EFTA) countries increased while the exports to North African
countries entered into decreasing trend, but increased in July. The exports
to the U.S. entered into a general decreasing trend while the decreasing
process over 50 percent to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)
continued. Although there were increases in February and March, the exports
to the Middle Eastern countries have just reached last year's level as of
the first seven months. According to the Exporters' Unions figures for
August, although there were high-rate decreases in exports of olive oil,
automotive products, and fruits and vegetables, these decreases were caused
temporarily mostly due to the earthquake except Russia. The exports of
hazelnuts, grain, cereals were seriously reduced in September.
[30] TURKISH MINORITY IN WESTERN THRACE SEND DONATIONS TO QUAKE SURVIVORS
IN ATHENS
[31] KOMOTINI, October 8 (A.A) - Representatives of the Turkish minority
living in Western Thrace submitted Greek authorities on Friday a portion of
the aid they collected for the quake victims in Athens. About 7.8 billion
Turkish Liras (TL) collected in Xanthi and 1.1 billion TL. collected in
Komotini was given to Vaso Papandreu, the Interior Minister and Stavros
Kampelis, the Secretary General of East Macedonia and Thrace region. In the
meantime, Turkish and Greek private radio stations in the region are
broadcasting a joint programme in their stations for one day to help quake
survivors in Athens.
[32] 5TH ANKIROS '99 TO BE ORGANIZED IN ISTANBUL
[33] ANKARA, October 8 (A.A) - The Fifth International Iron-Steel and
Moulding Technologies, Machinery, and Productions Fair (ANKIROS '99) will
be organized at TURYAP Fair and Congress Center in Istanbul between October
14 and 17. Officials from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and
Turkish Standards Institute are expected to speak at the opening. At the
fair, there will be a panel titled ''Under the experience of August 17
earthquake, quality of iron and steel products used in constructions''.
[34] INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION DECREASES 13.2 PERCENT IN AUGUST
[35] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The industrial production in Turkey in August
1999 decreased 13.2 percent compared to production in August 1998. The
State Institute of Statistics (DIE) said in a statement that the
manufacturing industry production reduced 14.4 percent. The power, gas, and
water sector production decreased 1 percent, and the mining sector
production fell 14.1 percent in August. The production of medical,
sensitive, and optical equipment, and watches decreased 46.8 percent, the
statement said, adding that production in chemical industry reduced 17.9
percent, and production of tobacco products fell 12.3 percent. It said the
production of wooden and mushroom products decreased 15.1 percent while
production of plastic rubber products dropped 31.4 percent. The production
of paper and paper products decreased 11.9 percent, and production of motor
vehicle bodies reduced 25 percent, it added. According to the eight-month
averages, the industrial production decreased 5.8 percent. The mining
industry production dropped 8.6 percent and the manufacturing industry
production decreased 6.5 percent between January and August 1999. In the
same period, the electricity, gas, and water sector production increased
2.8 percent.
[36] EIGHT TURKISH FIRMS TO PARTICIPATE IN 8TH WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION FAIR
IN GENEVA
[37] ISTANBUL, October 8 (A.A) - Eight Turkish firms will participate in
the Telecom 99+Interactive 99 Fair which is organized by International
Telecommunication Union every four years. Netas, Aselsan, Simko, Alcatel
Teletas, Kunt, Hesfibel and Interpro companies, under the coordination of
Turk Telekom, will display advanced telecommunication technologies and
their products at Turkey's national stand in the fair in Geneva between
October 10 and 17. The products of about 1,200 firms will be promoted to an
estimated number of 200,000 visitors. Also, 3,000 press members will work
in the fair. Turkey will share the no.7 exhibition hall with Canadian,
Australian, and Irish companies.
[38] TURKEY REACTS TO DECISION OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
[39] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - Sermet Atacanli, the Deputy Spokesman of the
Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday that the European Parliament's decision
concerning the relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) showed
that Turkey's sensitivities and the positive developments in Turkey
couldn't be evaluated sufficiently by the European Parliament. Noting that
the decision had positive aspects compared to several previous decisions,
Atacanli said, ''the decision about the relations between Turkey and the EU
which was taken by the European Parliament on October 6, 1999 in Strasbourg,
has been examined. The decision in question shows that Turkey's
sensitivities and the positive developments in Turkey couldn't be evaluated
sufficiently by the European Parliament although it has positive aspects
when compared to several previous decisions.'' ''The decision mentions that
Turkey's membership to the EU would positively contribute to development of
the EU in the future and also to peace and security in Europe. The decision
wishes the development of relations between Turkey and the European
Parliament and the other institutions of the EU,'' he said. ''Meanwhile,
the constructive positions in the statements of Gunther Verheugen, the EU
Commissioner for Enlargement, and Kimmo Sassi, the Minister of State of EU
Term President Finland, were pleasing,'' he said.
[40] AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTION DECREASES
[41] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The production and sale problem in the
automotive sector continues. The production by the sector decreased by 27
percent in first three quarters of the year. The Association of Automotive
Industry (OSD) issued a statement on Friday saying that a total of 30,121
motor vehicles were produced in September 1999, and the total motor vehicle
production in the first nine months of 1999 was 226,973. The motor vehicle
production in September 1998 had been 40,102, and the total production in
the first nine months of 1998 had been 309,027. The automobile production
decreased 5 percent to 22,288 in September 1999. A total of 23,358
automobiles had been produced in September 1998. The total automobile
production in the first nine months of 1999 decreased 17 percent to 151,
309. A total of 183,350 automobiles had been produced in the same period in
1998. The production of big lorries dropped by 78 percent, and the
production of small lorries decreased by 45 percent while the production of
buses reduced by 29 percent in the first nine months of the year, it said.
The statement added that the production of vans fell by 20 percent, and the
production of minibuses decreased by 8 percent, and the production of
midibuses dropped by 1 percent in the same period. According to the OSD
statistics, the imports of automobiles decreased 2 percent from 80,967 to
79,223 pieces in the first nine months of 1999. The imports of automobiles
from the European Union (EU) countries reduced by 6 percent and the imports
of automobiles from the Far Eastern countries decreased by 12 percent while
the imports from the former Eastern Block countries climbed by 249 percent.
In the January-September 1999 period, a total of 182,355 automobiles were
sold, but the sales decreased 21 percent compared to same period in 1998.
In the first nine months of 1999, a total of 103,132 domestic and 79,223
imported automobiles were sold. In the same period last year, a total of
150,144 domestic and 80,967 imported automobiles had been sold.
[42] COUNCIL OF MINISTERS' MEETING ENDS
[43] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The Council of Ministers' meeting ended on
Friday. The meeting which started at 10:00 local time at the Prime Ministry
building under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, ended at
15:30 local time. Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Sukru Sina
Gurel, the Minister of State and the Government Spokesman, said the 2000
year budget will be discussed by the Higher Planning Council at the
beginning of next week. Gurel said that Finance Minister Sumer Oral briefed
the cabinet members on the schedule for discussion of the 2000 year budget.
Sukru Sina Gurel stated that the Higher Planning Council will convene early
next week to discuss the budget draft which will be submitted to the
Parliament on October 17.
[44] MIRAS BLAMES INERT CENTRALIST SYSTEM FOR TURKEY'S ECONOMIC AND
POLITICAL PROBLEMS
[45] KOCAELI, October 8 (A.A) - ''Economic and political problems grow in
Turkey because of the political system which does not correct itself and
the statist economic understanding which nourishes this system,'' said Fuat
Miras, the Executive Board Chairman of the Union of Chambers and Commodity
Exchanged (TOBB) on Friday. Miras who spoke at Kocaeli Industry Chamber's
meeting said the politicians have been unstable about how to provide
temporary or permanent housing for quake survivors. He also asked the
government to be sensitive about the needs of businessmen and tradesmen who
lost their work places in the quake. ''Turkish nation showed the whole
world the best example of solidarity during the quake disaster. Turkish
people no longer have faith in the statist and centralist system,'' he
said. Despite all difficulties, the private sector integrated with the
world economy, Miras noted. ''However; the statist system in which politics
and economy are intermingled, limits the progress of Turkish private
sector. Turkey has the potential to become a modern state, but the current
system blocks it,'' Miras added. Speaking about a constitutional change,
Miras stated that Turkish Republic needed more democratization. ''All legal
institutions take their strength from a Constitution, good or bad. We will
not hesitate to criticize the bad sides of our Constitution,'' he
continued. ''We want a Constitution which gives priority to people.
Political parties and election laws must be changed as soon as possible. We
must revise our justice system and make it independent. We must do a local
administration reform to activate the inert centralist state system. We
must shrink the government in order to expand the nation. To do this, the
government must withdraw from economic activities and privatization
activities must be completed starting from public banks,'' Miras said.
[46] AID CAMPAIGN CONTINUES IN AUSTRALIA
[47] ANKARA, October 8 (A.A) - The aid campaign for quake victims continue
in Australia. Umut Arik, the Turkish Ambassador in Canberra said they
regularly transferred donations to the bank account of the Foreign
Ministry. Australia sent more than 386,000 Australian Dollars to the
Turkish Foreign Ministry as of Friday.
[48] SABANCI'S OTTOMAN CALLIOGRAPHY COLLECTION AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY
[49] BOSTON/ISTANBUL, October 8 (A.A) - The ''Golden Letters'', an Ottoman
calliography and art collection from Sakip Sabanci Museum opened at Harvard

Metropolitan Museum and Los Angeles Art Museum. Sakip Sabanci who spoke at
the opening of the exhibition drew attention to the role of art and culture
as a bridge among countries. James Cuno, the Museum Director said Sabanci
was a leader in education, culture, and art as much as he is in industry
and thanked Sabanci for sharing his exhibition with them. Sabanci's
exhibition is the largest Ottoman calliography exhibition displayed in the
U.S. Gold Letters will stay at Harvard University's Arthur M. Sackler Art
Museum until January 2, 2000 before it is transported to Europe. Later it
will be exhibited at Louvre Museum in Paris between March 17 and 29, 2000.

[51] ANTALYA, October 8 (A.A) - Akdeniz University's Economy and
Administrative Sciences Faculty is working to strengthen the recovering
relations between Turkey and Greece. Prof. Yavuz Tekelioglu from Economy
and Administrative Sciences Faculty told A.A that he invited Prof. Mihalis
Papayanakis, the Greek member of the European Parliament. Prof. Papayanakis
had won Abdi Ipekci Peace Award in 1998. Papayanakis who happily accepted
Turkey's invitation will speak at a conference titled ''Turkey, Greece, and
the EU'' on November 12. ''Governments cannot be sufficient on this matter
on their own. All segments of the society, non-governmental organizations,
and universities must also take an action. It is people who will maintain
peace. We want to do our share as a university. Therefore, we invited
Papayanakis who is a well known personality and a scientist. Besides, our
scientific cooperation with the Greek Volos University continues,'' Prof.
Tekelioglu said.

[53] ANKARA, Oct 8 (A.A) - The Turkish wrestlers won five out of their six
matches in Friday's morning session of the 34th World Free-Style Wrestling
Championships while two of them qualified to quarter final. Harun Dogan
competing in 58 kg category beat Okctavian Cuciuc of Moldova 6-1 in his
first match in the group. Dogan will take on Kowalski of Poland in his
second group match. Yuksel Sanli defeated Serguey Demtchenko of Belarus in
the 69 kg qualifier. Ali Ozen competing in 85 kg category beat Plamen Penev
of Bulgaria in this first match. Adem Bereket, in 76 kg second round, won
by fall against Mihai Stroia of Romania, and qualified to quarter final
which led the way for Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. Bereket will take on
Elshad Allahverdiyev of Azerbaijan in the quarter final. Kasif Sakiroglu
competing in 97 kg category beat his Mongolian opponent Gantogtokh in the
second round and qualified to quarter final. Sakiroglu will wrestle with
his Greek opponent Santhopoulos in quarter final.
