    MILLIYET (LIBERAL) DISASTER CENTER
The tent headquarters was constructed near the Fleet Commandership in Golcuk which collapsed in the quake. A total of 128 persons were rescued alive from the debris but 42 people died under the Commandership building. There are still 66 persons under the debris; including one admiral, wives of two admirals and the daughter of an admiral.

FIRE IN TUPRAS NEARLY PUT OUT
The fire in the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corp. (TUPRAS) was rendered ineffective by the efforts of the German fire-extinguisher teams. One naftha tank is being burned intentionally to run out the fuel in it. Thus, the ''emergency situation'' was declared in the refinery. The people living in Izmit started to return to their city. A report concerning the losses in the refinery will be sent to the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB).

    SABAH (LIBERAL)

    STILL 35,000 PEOPLE UNDER DEBRIS
Turkey informed the United Nations (U.N.) about the balance sheet of the quake. Turkey said that thousands of dead people were removed under the debris and that 35,000 people are still under the debris. Sukru Sina Gurel, the State Minister, said that the losses exceeded the first estimations and that Turkey is fearing that the losses can reach a point which is not seen in Turkey's history before.

    PREMIER ECEVIT: ''DON'T DEMORALIZE''
Premier Bulent Ecevit harshly criticised the claims saying that the state is helpless about the search and rescue operations. Ecevit said that this disaster was the worst disaster that Turkey has ever faced and that nobody should demoralize the officials who are carrying out efforts in the disaster area.

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    TURKEY LOOKS FOR A REMEDY
Enormous help comes to quake region, yet coordination still can not be provided. Dead bodies under the debris, the sewer system which went off and the garbage prevent people to endure. There is lack of medicine and epidemics in disaster areas. It is said that the death toll is more than the expected. Hopes fade for the ones who are under the debris for four days.

POLITICS COULD ONLY SPEAK ABOUT THE QUAKE
The opposition complaint about the inadequacy of the state after the quake and brought draft resolutions. The ministers promised to heal the wounds of the quake and defended that the state was prepared against the quakes. Political leaders only visited the disaster region and expressed their sorrow.

    RADIKAL (LEFT)

    SHUT UP AND WORK
Suat Duranay, Health Ministry Information Department Chairman, accused AKUT, the volunteer rescue team, which rescued many lives, of making a show because AKUT called for medical aid. Duranay who was assigned to overcome the deficiencies in coordination, said there was no need for medicine in the disaster area. Meanwhile, the health personnel and the people called for help throughout the day on Friday.

MANY THIEVES COME TO DISASTER REGION
As many aid comes to the disaster area from all around the world, conscienceless burglars were captured as they were stealing the bread of the victims of the quake. Alaatin Arslan and Husrev Kilic were taken under custody as they were captured stealing the foodstuff aid. The aid equipment was distributed to the disaster region.

    TÜRKİYE (RIGHT)

REPORT GIVEN FROM TURKEY TO U.N. IS HORRIBLE
A total of 35,000 people are under the debris. Lack of organization increased the death toll. Piazzi, Chairman of Humanitarian Affairs Coordination Office European Desk, said Turkey has given them the information that 35,000 people are under the debris. The New York Times said lack of organization increased the death toll.

    NO NEED FOR PANIC
A total of 400 aftershocks which happened following the major quake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale were the ''quake storm''. Prof. Isikara said ''there is not so much possibility for a major earthquake from now on.''

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    QUARANTINE
The quarantine is being seen as the only remedy to prevent the epidemics. The experts think that the possibility of pulling the people alive under the debris is very weak. To prevent the epidemics to lead to a new disaster, the citizens who are in the disaster areas should be discharged from the region as soon as possible.

A TOTAL OF 1305 AFTERSHOCKS SHAKE DISASTER AREA
Prof. Dr. Isıkara, the Director of Kandilli Observatory Center and Seismology Institute, said that a total of 1305 aftershocks shook the disaster area after the major quake which happened on August 17, 1999. Isikara said that the number of the aftershocks measuring more than 2.5 exceeded 500 and that the number of the aftershocks measuring more than four reached 59. Isikara added that these aftershocks was effective in a wide area including Akyazi, Izmit, Golcuk and Yalova.
