  • [01] TANER, MINISTER OF STATE: ''DESPITE THE ECONOMIC CRISIS WHICH SHOOK WORLD MARKETS, TURKEY IS AMONG THE COUNTRIES PRESERVING ITS RESERVES''

    NEW YORK, Oct 10 (A.A) - Gunes Taner, Minister of State responsible for economy said on Friday that despite the economic crisis which shook the world markets, Turkey is among the countries which preserve its reserves.

    Addressing a meeting arranged by Egebank within the framework of the activities planned in the US to integrate Turkish and the world economies, Taner said inflation is inclined to decrease in Turkey yet also complainted that interests were two times the inflation.

    Mentioning about the importance of tax reform Taner said 80 percent of energy reserves of the world were in the Caucasus and the Middle East and that Turkey was the only gate opening to this place. Taner pointed out that Iskenderun, southern province, will become a new oil thermal in the near future adding that oils of Caspian and the Middle East will flow here.

    [02] ANKARA TO HOST 12TH PETROLEUM CONGRESS AND EXHIBITION

    ANKARA, Oct 10 (A.A) - The 12th International Petroleum Congress and Exhibition will be organized in the Middle East Technical University in Ankara between 12 and 15 October it was reported on Saturday.

    President Suleyman Demirel is expected to join the opening of the congress where the latest technical developments and problems in the petroleum sector will be taken up.

    A total 106 papers will be presented at the congress organized by the Turkey Petroleum Geologist Association and the Oil Engineering Chamber, by foreign and domestic experts.

    Representatives of the political parties will participate at the panel discussion named ''Importance of Oil in Formation of World Policies'' in 12 October.

    Several foreign and domestic firms including TPAO, BOTAS, AMACO, BP, TEPCO, ARCO, AME, Schmuberger, CGG and GII, will display their latest products in the exhibition.

    [03] CULTURE MINISTER TALAY IN FRANKFURT - INVITATION FROM CROATIAN CULTURE MINISTER TO TALAY

    FRANKFURT, Oct 10 (A.A) - Istemihan Talay, the Culture Minister who is currently in Germany in order to attend at the 50th Frankfurt Book Fair which is known as one of the largest book fairs in the world, visited on Saturday the Turkish stand in the fair.

    A total of 75 Turkish publishing houses, organizations, associations and foundations participate at the fair with more than 3 thousand publications.

    Pointing out that the Turkish stand is very-well organized compared with the stands of last years, Talay reminded that stand was cost a total of 100 thousand German Mark.

    Meanwhile, Bozo Biskobic, the Croatian Culture Minister, has invited Talay to the Culture Ministers' Conference that will be organized by the UNESCO in Croatia in 1999.

    The meeting is expected to focus on the measures to be taken against historical works smuggling.

    Talay will proceed to Berlin in order to attend the ''Unlimited Berlin- Istanbul Festival'' on 13 October.

    He is scheduled to return to Turkey on 15 October.

    [04] GUREL, MINISTER OF STATE RETURNS TO TURKEY

    ISTANBUL, Oct 10 (A.A) - Sukru Sina Gurel, Minister of State returned to Turkey on Saturday after participating in Turkish-Moldovan Joint Economic Commision First Meeting.

    Addressing a statement in Ataturk Airport Gurel said the talks were held in mutual understanding and friendship adding that fields of cooperation and trade relations were reviewed during the meeting.

    Noting that they initiated studies to improve bilateral relations and to determine new cooperation facilities, Gurel said Turkish-Moldovon Joint Economic Commission First Term Protocol was signed on Friday in Kisinev.

    Gurel pointed out that with the signed protocol trade and economic relations between Turkey and Moldovo will be accelarated adding that they reached to a consensus of opinion to increase trade volume and diversify the products in trade.

    Gurel also said they decided to produce joint projects inwhich Turkish and Moldovon entrepreneurs will take place.

    [05] PRIME MINISTER YILMAZ: ''TURKEY SHOULD TAKE STEP IF SYRIA FAILS TO STEP BACK''

    BURSA, Oct 10 (A.A) - Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said on Saturday that Turkey wanted Syria to give up expending logistic support to the separatist terrorist organization adding that ''if Syria fails to step back on the issue, we will take a step.''

    Prime Minister Yilmaz participated in a ceremony in Gemlik county in Bursa province staged to lay the foundation of a hospital and was briefed about Ovaakcanatural gas transformation power plant.

    Yilmaz later responded to the questions of reporters about Turkish-Syrian relations.

    When asked if extradition of Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the separatist terrorist organization, will help the easing of tension between the two countries Yilmaz said ''this is one of our demands. We want all logistic support to be lifted. Syria should not let terrorists use this country as a passage to infiltrate Turkey. We want Syria to cooperate with us in struggle against the separatist terrorist PKK organization.''

    [06] OYMEN, TURKISH PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO NATO, MENTIONS ABOUT SYRIA'S SUPPORT TO SEPARATIST TERRORIST ORGANIZATION CLAIMING THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT LIVES, IN HIS SPEECH AT EMERGENCY NATO COUNCIL MEETING

    BRUSSELS, Oct 10 (A.A) - Onur Oymen, the Turkish Permanent Representative to the NATO, gave information about the escalating tension between Turkey and Syria in his speech at the NATO Council's emergency meeting where the issue of Kosovo crisis was discussed, it was reported on Friday.

    Oymen mentioned abut Syria's support to the separatist terrorist PKK organization, the past of the issue, latest developments in the region, Turkey's efforts to establish dialogues with Syria, the memorandum which was signed by the both states but has not been put into practice by Syria in his speech.

    Onur Oymen stressed that Turkey has many times warned Syria to stop supporting terrorism that claims thousands of innocent lives many times.

    Reminding that he earlier informed Javier Solana, the Secretary General of the NATO, on the issue, Oymen said that he can give information to the council whenever it is requested.

    [07] TRAFFIC ACCIDENT IN MILITARY CONVOY - EIGHT PRIVATES INJURED AT ACCIDENT

    AYDIN, Oct 10 (A.A) - A traffic accident occured in military convoy near Kosk County of Aydin Province, injuring eight privates, it was reported on Saturday.

    Officials told the A.A correspondent that a minibus under the control of Necati Akkaya, tried to pass the military convoy, but failed and crashed into one of the military vehicles. At the accident the trailer which is tied to the military vehicle, carrying soldiers, were overturned.

    Husnu Pekorder, Ayhan Kosu, Taskin Simsek, Mustafa Hoyuk, Fecri Ozturk, Ahmet Tan, Ali Sarlik and Mustafa Akgul were taken to the Aydin State Hospital.

    Necati Akkaya was taken into custody.

    Investigation regarded with the accident is underway.

    [08] FASSINO, ITALIAN DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER: ''ITALIAN GOVERNMENT DIDN'T ENCOURGE SO-CALLED KURDISH PARLIAMENT IN EXILE MEETING''

    ROME, Oct 10 (A.A) - Piero Fassino, Italian Deputy Foreign Minister said on Saturday that Italian government has never supported and encouraged relations with so-called Kurdish parliament in exile.

    Fassino, who preferred to remain silent so far about the meeting of the so- called Kurdish parliament in exile which took place in Italian Parliament with the initiatives of 14 Italian deputies, told A.A correspondent that ''this a meeting which was organized with the individual initiations of a group of Italian Parliamentarians. This can not be evaluated as initiatives of Italian Government and Parliament.''

    Fassino said Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini and Luciano Violante, Italian Parliament Speaker sent letters to their Turkish counterparts Ismail Cem and Hikmet Cetin and clarified that Italian Parliament and Government did not support or encourage any relations with the so-called Kurdish parliament in exile.

    Fassino also said Italy continýous to support Turkey's entrance to European Unýon (EU) and that close relations with the EU will strengthen Turkey's strategic role between Europe and Asia.

    [09] NINTH INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AND COOPERATION CONFERENCE IN ANTALYA - MARASLI, CHAIRMAN OF STRATEGICAL RESEARCHES INSTITUTE OF FOREIGN MINISTRY: - ''MANY COUNTRIES SPEND MORE MONEY TO DEFENCE RATHER THAN TO DEVELOPMENT''

    ANTALYA, Oct 10 (A.A) - Unal Marasli, the Chairman of Strategical Researches Institute of the Foreign Ministry, stressed on Saturday the dimension of the armament race, and said, ''many countries spend more money to defence rather than to development.''

    Addressing the Today's first session of the Ninth International Antalya Security and Cooperation Conference, Marasli emphasized that NATO should give priority to the issues of political violence, civil clashes, terrorism, drug smuggling and illegal migration in the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Prof. Dr. Ersin Onulduran from the International Relations Department of the Ankara University, said that NATO's inclusion of the Balkan countries into the alliance will bring peace and prosperity to the region.

    Prof. Dr. Huseyin Bagci from International Relations Department of the Middle East Technical University, stressed that Turkey lost her confidence in the Western countries following the decisions taken at the Luxembourg Summit.
