  • [01] FOREIGN MINISTER CEM DUE IN BOSNIA

    ANKARA, April 10 (A.A) - Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will pay an official visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina between April 14 and 16, it was reported on Friday.

    Foreign Ministry statement said during the visit bilateral relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina and implementation of Dayton Peace Agreement will be taken up.

    The statement said Cem will also exchange views on important regional and international issues like the Kosovo problem and cooperation in the Balkans.

    [02] INTERIOR MINISTER SAYS: ''OUR AIM IS TO ERASE FRIGHT OF TERRORISM FROM THE HEARTS OF OUR PEOPLE''

    MUS, April 10 (A.A) - Murat Basesgioglu, Interior Minister said on Thursday that the aim of the government and the state was to erase fright of terrorism from the heart of people.

    Basesgioglu arrived in Southeastern Mus province together with Aydin Arslan, Emergency Rule Regional Governor, Ertugrul Cakir, Chief of Security Department and Edip Safter Gaydali, the Motherland Party (ANAP) Bitlis Deputy.

    Basesgioglu said the government was in an effort to solve the problems of eastern and southeastern provinces one by one and that it was determined to do this.

    Interior Minister said security forces were about to put an end to terrorism adding that ''now, they are trying to help people to erase fright of terrorism from the hearts of people.''

    Basesgioglu said Turkey has been struggling against the separatist terrorist PKK organization for 14 years and expressed pleasure over the point where they came.

    [03] 71 PEOPLE INJURED IN TRAIN COLLISION

    ISPARTA, April 10 (A.A) - A train slammed into the back of a waiting train in a station in Gumusgun Train Station in Western Isparta province injuring at least 71 people. One of the injured was in serious condition, it was reported on Friday.

    The accident occurred late Thursday in Isparta when a train carrying 55 passengers from the southern city of Burdur collided with a stationary train with 130 people on board.

    A technical delegation started studies to specify the reason of the accident.

    Ahmet Cobanoglu, Director of Turkish Railroad Company (TCDD) of 7th region said 71 of the 185 passangers were wounded and that the accident may happen due to a technical failure.

    [04] PRIME MINISTER YILMAZ'S SCHEDULED VISIT TO UZBEKISTAN

    TASHKENT, April 10 (A.A) - Umur Apaydin, Turkey's Ambassador to Tashkent speaking about Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz's scheduled official visit to Uzbekistan which will take place between April 12 and 14, said ''Yilmaz is coming together with a lot of ministers, bureaucrats, businessmen and journalists, this is an indication of the importance Turkey attaches to the region and Uzbekistan, this visit will add a new momentum to relations between the two countries.''

    Addressing a news conference Apaydin said Yilmaz will come as the official guest of Islam Kerimov, Uzbek President and that this will be the first visit of Yilmaz to this country.

    Mentioning about bilateral relations between the two countries Apaydin said there was approximately 400 million dollar trade volume between Turkey and Uzbekistan and that the total of the business volume which Turkish constructors and businessmen took over in Uzbekistan were nearly 1.5 million dollars.

    Apaydin said in the first years when Uzbekistan gained its independence, relations with Turkey was depended upon the base of ''aid'' yet, he added Uzbekistan managed to stand still with the wise politicies it implemented in time and now a policy based on cooperation was adopted.

    [05] FOREST FIRE - 90 HECTARES OF FIELD BURNED IN FOREST FIRE IN HOPA AND OF

    HOPA/OF, April 10 (A.A) - A total of 90 hectares field burnt in fire which broke out in two separate areas. The first fire broke out in foresty field in Hopa township in the Black Sea Artvin province and the second broke out in Of township in the Black Sea Trabzon province, it was reported on Friday.

    Officials said the fire in Hopa township spread to the foresty area with the affect of the wind during when the rubbish gathered around was set into fire.

    Villagers informed gendarmerie forces and foresty administration and efforts are underway to extinguish the fire and prevent its spreading to other fields.

    Meanwhile, another fire broke out in foresty area in Dumlusu village in Of township and spread the surrounding area with the effect of the wind. The reason of the fire could not be specified yet.

    The fire can not be taken under control yet.

    [06] LETTER FROM DENKTAS TO ANNAN

    NEW YORK, April 10 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) sent a letter to Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General, and stressed that Greek Cypriot administration was seriously making plans to set up an air force.

    Greek Cypriot press earlier said the air force in question would be set up of Greek planes yet, the sign of Greek Cypriot government will be written on these planes to prevent international reactions.

    Greek Cypriots a while ago constructed an air base in Baf and disclosed that Greek planes would be deployed here.

    The letter Denktas sent to the UN Secretary General was issued as the UN document and which pointed out that ''all these developments formed a provocation forwarded to TRNC.''

    In the letter Denktas stressed that such initiatives of the Greek Cypriot Side aimed at spoiling existing strategic balance and creating crisis and called on the UN Secretary General to take necessary measures to make Greek Cypriots give up this adventurous attitude in this critical stage.

    [07] DEFENSE MINISTER SEZGIN: ''WE WILL NOT SIT AT NEGOTIATION TABLE WITH THE TERRORISTS''

    ANTALYA, April 10 (A.A) - Ismet Sezgin, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister said the allegations that Apo, chief of the separatist terrorist organization, sent a ''ceasefire letter'' to Chief of General Staff and Prime Minister were baseless and stressed that they would not sit at negotiation table with the terrorists.

    Addressing a dinner hosted by Husnu Tuglu, Antalya Governor, in the honor of Ismail Hakki Karadayi, Chief of General Staff and several force commanders Sezgin responded to questions of reporters that Apo sent a ceasefire letter.

    Sezgin noted that this act of the separatist terrorist organization was a tactic and refuted the allegations. Sezgin said security forces will overcome this problem within one or two years.

    Pointing out that separatist terrorist organization was supported by several neighboring countries, Sezgin said ''this terrorist organization would have been eradicated by now if it was not supported by sevral countries.''

    [08] INTENSE AGENDA IN PARLIAMENT

    ANKARA, April 10 (A.A) - A very intense agenda waits for the Parliament after Feast of Sacrifice holiday. Parliamentary General Assembly will convene on April 14 and take up Parliamentary Investigation motion related with the personal wealth of Tansu Ciller, True Path Party leader.

    The motion requests investigation of the acquisitions of Ciller and her businessmen husband allegedly made while she was Prime Minister. The couple denied any wrongdoing.

    Tax reform, several draft resolutions related with economy, residence permit of foreigners living in Turkey, and a draft resolution foreseeing a change in the foundation and broadcasting of Radio and TV would be taken up primarily.

    Draft laws prepared in an aim to ''struggle against fundamentalism'' will be taken up by Parliamentary Commissions. These draft resolutions will immediately take effect after being negotiated.

    Meanwhile, the coalition parties will take up 14 files related with the stripping of immunities of six deputies.

    [09] TURKISH-AMERICAN BUSINESSMEN FORUM IMPROVES RAPIDLY

    NEW YORK, April 10 (A.A) - The first anniversary of the Turkish-American Businessmen Forum, based in New York, was celebrated on Friday. The Forum was set up in an aim to establish a Turkish lobby in the US.

    Forum administrators said they began to accept members from 50 other states of the US in order to further strengthen the forum. They expect the number of members to increase to 600.

    The forum members will participate in the World Turkish Businessmen Convention which will take place in Aegean Izmir province on April 30.

    [10] INCIDENT IN PYLA - TURKEY HARSLY CONDEMNS NEW PROVOCATION INCIDENT IN PYLA

    ANKARA, April 10 (A.A) - Turkey on Friday condemned the attack made on bust of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Turkey's secularist founder in Pyla village. The bust of Ataturk was sprayed with blue paint and a Turkish flag was stolen from a school in the village of Pyla.

    Foreign Ministry statement said ''we harsly condemn the new provocation act which happened in Pyla village in the buffer zone on April 8.''

    The statement said Turkey condemns such agressive acts which are primitive enmity feelings and which had also happened earlier to further escalate unconfidence atmosphere between the two peoples in the island.

    Foreign Ministry statement said ''we expect the UN Peacekeeping Force officials to do their best against this ugly act which had been protested and take effective measures to prevent the repetition of such similar provocative acts.''

    [11] EXPLOSION IN SULTANAHMET DISTRICT WOUNDS TWO TURKISH CITIZENS

    ISTANBUL, April 10 (A.A) - An explosion in a park in the Sultanahmet district Friday injured nine people, three of them foreigners and two of them were soldiers.

    The injured had been taken to local hospitals for treatment. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

    Two of the wounded ones were Indians, one person from New Zealand and four of them were Turkish citizens. Seven of the wounded ones are in good conditions.

    Kutlu Aktas, Istanbul Governor, visited the wounded ones in the hospital and pointed out that necessary studies were initiated to capture the assailants.

    Meanwhile, eye witnesses said two unidentified assailants fled with motorcycles after leaving the bomb on the spot

    Police sealed off the area and bomb squads were inspecting a package at the park for possible explosives.

    [12] DENKTAS RETURNS FROM EGYPT

    LEFKOSA, April 10 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Friday mentioned about the incidents which happened in Pyla and called the attitude of Greek Cypriots who want to take revenge even from a bust as ''impudence.''

    Denktas who returned to the Island after concluding a visit to Egypt said such ugly acts forwarded to Ataturk who contributed a lot to Turkish-Greek friendship was in fact directed to his masterpieces.

    ''I hope that other Greek Cypriot citizens living in Pyla will not confirm this ugly act. I wish Clerides to say it should not be done to Turks and to Ataturk'' he added.

    Denktas said there was no reason to be afraid of Ataturk as he aimed at strengthening Turkish-Greek friendship by saying ''Peace in the country, peace in the world.''

    The bust of Ataturk was sprayed with blue paint and a Turkish flag was stolen from a school in the village of Pyla.

    [13] NINE TURKISH CITIZENS DIE IN CHAOS IN MINA

    MECCA, April 10 (A.A) - Mehmet Nuri Yilmaz, Head of the Relgious Affairs said on Friday that nine Turkish citizens were killed during the chaos Thursday in Mina, about five kilometers (three miles) from Mecca

    Yilmaz said the ones who died were people who came to this country several months ago.

    Names of the Turkish citizens who died so far are: Seref Kotan, (Ankara) Yahya &Ccedil;itil (Germany Turkish Federation), Omer Turk (Kahramanmaras), Veli Culfa (Kahramanmaras), Hasan Dogan , Esma Sukes (Ankara), Zakire Koc , Makbule Bostan (Ankara), Muhittin Goz.
