[02] TURKEY-IRAQ-UN - HUMANITARIAN AID COMMITTEE TO CONVENE ON MONDAY

ANKARA, Feb 8 (A.A) - The government, which thinks that the possibility of war in the Gulf is high within the framework of the recent crisis between Iraq and the United Nations (UN), deepened its efforts regarding the measures that will be taken, it is reported on Saturday.

''Humanitarian Aid Committee,'' which was set up during the Council of Ministers meeting the same day, will convene under the leadership of State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel for the first time on Monday.

Government sources said that the committee will take up two main mission, the first of them is to evaluate and minimise the risks which Turkish people can face with during a possible war and one of these risks is the danger of chemical weapons.

The second mission of the committee is to prevent a possible migration from Iraq to Turkey and Red Crescent will play a significant role to this end.

[03] TURKEY-EUROPE - ITALIAN DEFENSE MINISTER ANDREATTA: ''TURKEY'S PLACE IS IN EU''

MUNIH, Feb 8 (A.A) - Italian Defense Minister Beniamine Andreatta said on Saturday that the place of Turkey is in European Union (EU).

Addressing the ''34th European Security Policy Conference,'' Italian Defense Minister Andreatta stated that the importance of Mediterranean region in security policies of Europe and the world increases day by day.

Noting that Turkish-EU relations should be improved, Andreatta pointed out that the decisions taken during Luxembourg Summit did not close the entrance path of Turkey to EU.

[04] TURKEY-TRNC-EU - TRNC PARLIAMENT SPEAKER ATUN: ''AN AGREEMENT WHICH DOES NOT PROVIDE SOVEREIGNTY OF TRNC, MEANS START OF DANGER FOR US''

ISTANBUL/KADIKOY, Feb 8 (A.A) - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament Speaker Hakkı Atun said on Saturday that the Cyprus question can only be solved if it is accepted that the two communities in the island are two separate states.

Addressing a panel in Istanbul, TRNC Parliament Speaker Atun stated that the decision of equality, which was taken during 1965 Luxembourg Summit, has recently been violated and Turkey and TRNC are kept outside the Cyprus question.

Noting that Cyprus issue is mainly between Turkey and Greece, Atun added that ''even if the Cyprus question is solved while making discussions with EU, we can not think of a Turkish state outside European Union (EU) and a fair balance should be set up between Turkey and Greece as being guarantor states. Turkey and TRNC should not be led to a dangerous position because of the status of Greece and the Greek Cypriot side in EU. An agreement which does not provide the sovereignty of TRNC, means the start of danger for us.''

''The Cyprus question can only be solved by negotiations between states and by recognition of political equality between two sides at the state level. If the fact that the two communities are two separate states is not accepted, netiher the EU process nor a lasting solution can be found in Cyprus. If TRNC does not involve in EU process, this will not be the end of the world,'' said Atun.

Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Inal Batu in his part said that joining of Cyprus to EU without Turkey is impossible within the framework of rights stemming from the agreements signed regarding the Cyprus issue, even if a political solution is found in the island.
