''We think that the attitute of Mr Denktas is very right and our statements were also issued within this framework. A progress can only be recorded in Cyprus if one approaches this issue upon these fundamental realities,'' said Gurel.

[07] TURKEY-IRAQ-US - MEETING HEADED BY PRIME MINISTER YILMAZ ENDS - PRIME MINISTRY STATEMENT: ''FOREIGN MINISTER CEM IS FORESEEN TO VISIT BAGHDAD IN THE COMING DAYS''

ANKARA, Feb 1 (A.A) - The meeting headed by Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz which evaluated the recent tension between US and Iraq and the attitute of Turkey ended on Sunday.

Prime Ministry said in a written statement after the meeting that Turkey hopes the tension between Iraq and the United Nations (UN) to diffuse and it is worried about the developments. Noting that Turkey will continue to hold contacts with the concerned sides and neighbouring states which will be negatively effected by the escalation of the crisis, the statement added that as a first step Foreign Minister Ismail Cem is foreseen to visit Baghdad in the coming days.

The statement went on saying that:

''As it is known, Turkey suffered a lot from the developments after the Gulf Crisis including the escalation of separatist terrorism. Turkey, which opposses to widening of mass destructive weapons in our region, extends support to United Nations (UN) Special Commission's mission and targets which are foreseen by UN Security Council.

Turkey, which supports the view that the problems between Iraq and UN Special Commission should be solved by peaceful methods, believes that the efforts launched to solve the crisis by diplomatic ways should continue and reiterates its call to Iraq that it should fully implement the resolutions of UN Security Council as soon as possible. We believe that the participation of Iraq's other neighbours in this peaceful initiation which is also supported by UN Secretary General will also be beneficial.''
