POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION AVAILABLE

Bio Energy from Micro Algae (BEMA)

A 2-year research position, is available at the Unit of Bioengineering, University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (http://www.uclouvain.be/gebi) for a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist or engineer.

The project seeks to optimize the capture of light energy and maximize the production of microalgal biomass in order to achieve maximal sequestration of CO2 with concomitant production of lipids and other high added value metabolites. After an initial analysis of photobioreactor (PBR) systems in terms of critical factors affecting their performances, a prototype pilot PBR will be designed and implemented, capable of capturing enriched CO2 streams with efficient production of lipids. An evaluation of the physiological response of the algae cultivated in this pilot under transient conditions will supply data for a field operation designed to lead to an industrial PBR demonstration unit. The research will be carried out within a major consortium of industry and university partners.

Candidate profile

Bio-engineer, microbiologist or chemical engineer with a strong background in bioprocess engineering, modelling or photobiology; good technical skills in microbial fermentation and process design are highly desirable, while prior experience with algal cultivation will be considered an asset; hands-on experience with analytical techniques (GC, MS, HPLC, wet chemistry) are required. Must be academically competitive, self-motivated, rigorous, with good oral and writing skills in English, initiative, responsibility and team spirit.

Language

English. Some knowledge of French would be beneficial for the candidate to fully enjoy the social life and culture of the region.

Other requirements

Complete CV, academic transcripts and two letters of recommendation. Deadline for submission of application (preferably by e-mail): 15 February 2011
