POST-DOCTORAL POSITION FOR STUDIES ON MOSQUITO OLFACTION

A post-doctoral position to study the molecular and functional properties of odorant receptors in the malaria mosquito vector Anopheles gambiae is available in the laboratory of “Insect Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology”, Institute of Biology, National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”.

The research is conducted under the framework of a 4-year European research project entitled “ENAROMaTIC: European Network for Advanced Research on Olfaction for Malaria Transmitting Insect Control”. The project aims at a reduction in the frequency of malaria transmission through interference with the mosquito’s capacity to detect in its environment the presence of odors of human origin, the chemical cues that guide it to its host to whom it may transmit the malaria parasite. For the laboratory “Insect Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology”, the major goal is the development of insect cell-based high-throughput screening platforms for in vitro detection of the presence of bioactive ligands for selected odorant receptors in complex mixtures of compounds obtained from collections of natural products and in synthetic compound libraries.

The successful candidate will have documented research expertise in areas related to the functional characterization of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), particularly the regulation of their expression in terms of downstream signalling effected upon ligand-mediated activation. He/she will also have adequate working experience in mammalian or insect cell culture methodologies. Experience in methodologies related to heterologous gene expression in eukaryotic expression systems and recombinant protein detection and purification is also desirable but not obligatory.

Financial support for this position is available for a period of four (4) years and will be implemented through renewable yearly contracts. The amount of support will be determined based on qualifications and expertise.

Interested candidates should send electronically the following documentation to Prof. Kostas Iatrou (iatrou at bio.demokritos.gr): (i) a detailed curriculum vitae; (ii) copies of university transcripts; (iii) a short statement (3 pages maximum) describing briefly their research interests, expertise and accomplishments; (iv) copies of their two best publications; and (v) names of two referees who will be asked for recommendations.

Deadline for submission of applications: 24/6/2008.
