Research associate positions in Computer Science at U. of CyprusJob Opportunities Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: George Angelos Papadopoulos <george@cs.ucy.ac.cy> UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE JOB ANNOUNCEMENT -- DEADLINE: 15th JUNE 2001 VACANCIES FOR TWO RESEARCH ASSOCIATES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING FOR DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS & DATABASES AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOOLS The Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus announces two (2) new positions for Research Associates within the research project "MEDICATE: The Control, Identification, and Delivery of Prescribed Medication", funded by the E.U.'s IST Programme of FP5. The positions are initially for one (1) year renewable up to three (3) years. The annual salary for a Research Associate is in the range of the A8-A10 scale combined (about CY # 9,000 - 16,000, depending on qualifications and prior experience). [At present CY #1 = 1.1 sterlings and CY #1 = 1.6 US dollars, approximately.] Project MEDICATE aims to develop an innovative care model to assist with compliance to a medication regimen and address problems of non-compliance to prescribed medication regimes. As part of the project, an Internet-based control server will be developed, providing two major functionalities: (1) remote monitoring and control of home-installed devices for dispensing medication to patients; and (2) organization of patient's data in a database and processing of them using a medical expert and decision support system. The above mentioned two positions reflect the needs for these two tasks respectively. The tasks to be undertaken by the first successful applicant (RA-1) will focus on the design, development and implementation of the software infrastructure required for the control server to communicate with the remote home-based units for exchanging information. S/He will also be responsible for developing a web-based interface to the database developed by the other applicant (see below) and design an XML-based medical records exchange system. The tasks to be undertaken by the other successful applicant (RA-2) will be focused on designing and implementing a database for storing patients' data and medical records, and an expert and decision support system for analysing these data. A suitable candidate for either of the two positions should have a first degree in Computer Science or related subject and, preferably, also a sufficiently specialised postgraduare degree. S/He should also be at ease with programming in large scale software projects. For the first position (RA-1) the specialisation areas are one of the following: Internet Technologies, Software Engineering, and Distributed Systems. Additional work experience or knowledge on Middleware Platforms, Mobile Computing or Computer Networking, will be considered as an advantage. For the second position (RA-2) the specialisation areas are one of the following: Databases, Expert Systems, Decision Support Systems, Artificial Intelligence. Applicants need not be citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Knowledge of the Greek language, although considered a practical advantage, is by no means a requirement. The research activities pursued by both RA-1 and RA-2 successful applicants can lead to the earning of a Ph.D. if they so wish (in this case, any academic fees for enroling to the Department's Ph.D. programme are waived).
