1. A two-year postdoctoral or three-year predoctoral position in environmental bioengineering is available at the University of Louvain in Belgium. The research involves the kinetic characterization of psychrophilic (cold-loving) bacteria isolated from sites in the Antarctica, together with an assessment of their capacities in wastewater treatment in colder temperate regions based on their capacity to produce low-temperature adapted hydrolytic enzymes. Issues of catalytic activity and stability as well as design considerations for bioreactor-based applications will also be explored. A background in chemical, biochemical or civil engineering or in a quantitative biological or chemical discipline is required, together with computer literacy. A generous stipend will be accorded, based on qualifications. The position is available immediately.

Please send your CV and names of 3 references (with a phone / fax number or e-mail) to:

Prof. Dr. Spiros N. Agathos, Head, Unit of Bioengineering, University of Louvain, Place Croix du Sud 2/19, B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Phone: (32 10) 47 36 44 or 47 36 55. Fax: (32 10) 47 30 62. E-mail: agathos@gebi.ucl.ac.be

2. A two-year postdoctoral position in environmental bioengineering is available at the University of Louvain in Belgium. The research involves the isolation, purification and application of fungal oxidative enzymes from novel fungal isolates to the treatment (decoloration and detoxification) of mixtures of azo- or anthraquinonic dyes. In addition to an experimental evaluation and modelling of the decoloration performance of these enzymes, their implementation in bioreactors will be sought. A background in chemical, biochemical or civil engineering or in a quantitative biological or chemical discipline is required, together with computer literacy. Prior experience in research involving the use of white-rot fungi, peroxidases or decoloration systems will be an asset. A competitive stipend will be accorded, based on qualifications. Starting date is May 1, 2000.
