Postdoc and PhD positions at IMBB-Crete, Greece

Jobs Directory

From: Tassos Economou <anastassios.economou@Dartmouth.EDU>

INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY and DEPT. OF BIOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, IRAKLIO-CRETE, GREECE

AVAILABLE POSITIONS: one postdoctoral fellow and one graduate student

STARTING DATE: October 1996

RESEARCH PROJECT:

Molecular characterization of secretory protein translocation across biological membranes using E.coli as a model system. E.coli preprotein translocase,a complex membrane protein, has been purified and the reaction has been fully reconstituted in vitro (Economou and Wickner, 1994 Cell 78:835-43; Economou et al., 1995 Cell, 83:1171-81). The project will make use of molecular biology and biochemical techniques to explore further the energetics, catalytic mechanism and structure of preprotein translocase. Structural studies of translocase subunits will be carried out in collaboration with Prof. Michalis Kokkinidis (IMBB Structural Biology group; for recent work see Athanasiadis et al., 1994, Nature Struct Biol,1:469-75; Vlassi et al., 1994, Nature Struct Biol, 1:706-16; Kokkinidis et al., 1993 Proteins 16:214-6).

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

For postdocs: strong molecular biology and/or protein biochemistry skills. A background in X-ray crystallography and computer modelling on graphics stations is essential for the structure project.

For graduate students: honours degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related discipline. Previous research experience is a plus. Students can join the Graduate programme in Molecular and Cellular biology of the University.

OTHER INFO:

Funding for the project is provided by European Union and Hellenic Research Secretariat sources. Active collaborations exist with several other European labs (as part of EU-funded networks) and exchange visits to carry out experiments using specialized equipment are encouraged. The work will be carried out in the brand new Biology labs (Voutes Campus, outside Iraklio). The official language of the lab is English.

Interested applicants should send a CV and three letters of recommendation to:
