A CELEBRATION OF GREEK WRITER ANTONIS SAMARAKIS: FEB 16th, 2007

The Press and Communication Office of the Consulate General of Greece in New York and the Hellenic Literature Society will host a celebration of the well known Greek writer, Antonis Samarakis on Friday Feb 16th, at 6:30 pm, at the Greek Press and Communication Office, 55 East 59th Street, 24th floor (between Madison and Park Avenues).

Mrs Eleni Samarakis, the widow of the author, will be present at this presentation of a collection of short stories by Antonis Samarakis, published by Cosmos Publishing under the title The Passport and Other Short Stories and translated by Andrew Horton.

Drs. Theodore Kourembanas and Andrew Horton will discuss Mr. Samarakis's works and Dr. Horton will read selected sections from the book. Dr. Vangelis Calotychos will introduce the panel and moderate the discussion.

ANTONIS SAMARAKIS (1919-2003)

Antonis Samarakis was born in Athens, where he studied law. From 1935 to 1963 he worked at the Department of Labor of the government of Greece. During the Metaxas dictatorship he quit his position where he returned in 1945. He represented Greece in international conferences on labor and immigration.

His first literary works, a collection of poems was published in the early 1930s in the periodicals "Paidikos Kosmos" and "Diaplasis ton Paidon" and he continued by publishing articles in various periodicals. Mr. Samarakis published his first collection of short stories, Ziteitai Elpis, in 1954. He followed with 5 more books, which were repeatedly reprinted and translated into other languages. He was awarded the 1962 National Award for Short Stories for his book Arnoumai, the 1966 Kosta Ourani Award and the 1970 French Award for a Detective Story for his work To Lathos. He was also honored for his overall contribution to literature by Europalia (1982) and with the Knight's Cross of Arts and Letters (1995). After the Metapolitafsi he published political and social articles in various newspapers.

DR. ANDREW HORTON

Dr. Horton is an award-winning screenwriter and author of fifteen books on film, screenwriting and culture. He is the Jeanne H. Smith Professor of Film and Video Studies at the University of Oklahoma and the author of Writing the Character Centered Screenplay (1994), The Films of Theo Angelopoulos (1999), and Laughing Out Loud: Writing the Comedy Centered Screenplay (2000). He has also translated Selected Short Plays by Costas Mourselas.

DR. VANGELIS CALOTYCHOS

Dr. Calotychos was born in London and studied at Birmingham University. He received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Harvard University, where he remained as Lecturer in Modern Greek Studies after graduation. He was Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature and Hellenic Studies at New York University and is currently Kyriakos Tsakopoulos Assistant Professor of Hellenic Studies, at Columbia University. He has edited two interdisciplinary books on Cyprus: Cyprus and its People (1998) and Divisive Cities, Divided Cities (1999); and authored the critical work Modern Greece: A Cultural Poetics (2003).
