A STAGE FOR DIONYSOS: THEATRICAL SPACE & ANCIENT DRAMA exclusive Canadian showing at Gallery Stratford

Gallery Stratford will present the only Canadian showing of the major international exhibition A Stage for Dionysos: Theatrical Space & Ancient Drama from May 26 through August 19, 2001 at 603 Romeo Street during Stratford's celebrated theatre summer season. The exhibition comprehensively presents the architecture and location of ancient Greek theatres as well as the modern revival of ancient drama and its decisive contribution to contemporary culture.

Curated by Spyros Mercouris, the exhibition is organized and circulated through the Melina Mercouri Foundation, with presentations in Italy, England, Bulgaria, the United States, Germany, France, and Turkey during a seven-year international tour, before returning to Greece in time for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

The magic and poetry of Greek theatre are dramatically displayed through architectural models, artifacts, costumes, masks, large-format photographs of the work of leading 20th century theatre designers and directors, video and multimedia presentations. Occupying approximately 10,000 square feet, the exhibition has been described as both in-depth history and a feast for the imagination.

The exhibition will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Admission will be $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. Major public and private sponsors include the Greek Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund, ABB, N.A. Engineering, the Steve Atanas Stavro Foundation, Cinespace Studios-Mirkopoulos Brothers, R. Ritz-architect, the City of Stratford, The Victorian Inn on the Park, Cullitons Security Limited, Hellenic Heritage Foundation, Fairway Canadian Express-Angelos Demangos and Olympic Airways.
