New York, October 14 - November 19: Socrates on Trial by the Educational Theater of New YorkPublic Events Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: NESTOR RODRIGUEZ <NESTKING@email.msn.com> Educational Theater of New York 140 East 46 Street Suite 10 New York, NY 10017 212-972-0672 SOCRATES ON TRIAL is the first adaptation for the theater of Plato's dialogues, Euthyphro, Apology, Crito and Phaedo. There are many issues of interest: the indictment in Euthyphro; Socrates' defense in the Apology, which has provoked much controversy among scholars and readers as to Socrates' motives, desires and reasoning; the first account of the social contract between the laws of the state and its citizens in Crito; and the possible meanings of life after death in Phaedo. David Elyha as Socrates brings the philosopher's personality, character and ideas to the stage. The audience not only hears Plato's words, but how Socrates might have seemed to the Athenians in the year 399 B.C. Ultimately, why he was found guilty, then condemned to death is the basis for much discussion which takes place with the audience, the actors and the director after each performance. This unusual play, distilled from the four dialogues, remains faithful to Plato's text. There is no modernization, nothing added. It opens in Greece in 399 B.C., the day before Socrates trial. The situation itself creates the dramatic impact of the play. SOCRATES ON TRIAL will be performed for six weeks only, from October 14 through November 19; Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at Theater 22, 54 West 22nd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in New York City. All tickets are $12 and reservations are necessary. Bookings at your school or organization can be arranged and background material is available upon request. If you would like further information or would like to make reservations, please call 212-972-0672. I look forward to hearing from you. Barbara Bregstein Managing Director.
