"Architecture on the Acropolis" at National Library of Canada

On Tuesday, February 29, 2000, Professor Harrison Eiteljorg II will present an illustrated lecture in English on "Architecture on the Acropolis." The event, at 8:00 p.m. at the National Library of Canada (395 Wellington Street), is sponsored by the Ottawa-Hull Society of the Archaeological Institute of America - Canada and the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies, as part of its lecture series on "The Mediterranean: Cradle of Western Civilization."

In the presence of the Ambassador of Greece, H.E. John Alexander Thomoglou, the lecture is undertaken in collaboration with the National Library of Canada, the Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society of Ottawa and the Greek Embassy. Vin d'honneur is courtesy of the Embassy of Greece.

The structures on the Athenian Acropolis are among the best known in the world. However, beguiled by their beauty, we often miss the importance of their use, says Prof. Eiteljorg. Focusing especially on the Propylaea, he will talk about the buildings on the Acropolis in terms of function, placement, and architectural development.

Prof. Harrison Eiteljorg II is Director of the Center for the Study of Architecture at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. His areas of specialization include classical architecture and computers in archaelogy, while his field work has taken him throughout southeastern Europe. Among other publications, he is the author of The Entrance to the Acropolis Before Mnesicles (1994).
