invite you to attend a slide presentation followed by a lecture by Titina Loizidou LOIZIDOU v. TURKEY A Cypriot Woman's Struggle to Return Home
WHERE:
WHEN: Thursday, March 18, 1999
Titina Loizidou is a Greek Cypriot woman living on the island of Cyprus. On March 19th 1989 Ms. Loizidou attempted what many may consider the most natural thing on earth; going home. Ms. Loizidou was forbidden of doing so and was violently held back by Turkish forces from moving to her house in Kyrenia. What began as a domestic, local brawl came to be known as a successful European legal precedent: the Loizidou v. Turkey case. The determination of a refugee to go back to her house led her through a 9 -year battle against Turkey, the occupying force in Cyprus. Loizidou managed to have Turkey condemned and held responsible for her acts in Cyprus, and accountable for reversing them in The European Court of Human Rights Turkey must now answer to the call of the Court to pay Loizidou the pecuniary damages awarded and allow her to go home. Admission is free.
