Pretoria, July 19: Protest march for CyprusPublic Events Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: "N.Paraskevas" <nicop@global.co.za> July 19, 1998 will see a wide representation of the South African Greek community and other fellow South Africans, presenting a memorandum to the South African Turkish Ambassador on the 24th anniversary of the illegal and world condemned occupation of Cyprus by Turkey. The demands will be presented to the most senior representative of Turkey in South Africa and demands that Turkey withdraws it's illegal occupation of the Republic of Cyprus and immediately ceases it's gross human rights violations. The handing over of the memorandum will be proceeded by a march organized by the Hellenes for Human Rights, Equity and Justice(HHEJ), a representative organization of the Greek community and will include personal representatives of other communities and political parties, including the ANC, SACP, UDM and SAHEFA. The march will commence from the Greek Orthodox Church in 31 Lynwood Road, Pretoria at 12pm and proceed to the Turkish Embassy there after. In this period of peace and reconciliation, where the age – old Irish dispute is in the process of being resolved, where most former Soviet Block states are regaining their independence and sovereignty and South Africa has been liberated of the shackles of apartheid, it is surely a human atrocity that one nation still remains divided and subjugated The Republic of Cyprus is subjected to the humility of having one third of its land illegally occupied by a hostile foreign force namely Turkey. Turkey being one of the most frequent and gross violators of human rights, both in Cyprus and within its own borders, is still defying international demands for a plausible solution. Their blatant disregard for world opinion, freedom and democracy, which we hold so dearly in South Africa must be checked immediately and effectively if we are to continue as a global player who contributes to world peace, security and stability.
