ARCHBISHOP SPYRIDON TO PRESIDE OVER
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR YOUNG MISSING CYPRIOT KASSAPIS

"His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon will preside over a very special memorial service on Capitol Hill next week for young Greek-Cypriot Andrew Kassapis," said Philip Christopher, president of the International Coordinating Committee -- Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA). On March 5 the U.S. State Department notified the Kassapis family of Detroit, Michigan that they found in Cyprus the remains of their son and brother, Andrew -- one of the five "missing" Americans captured alive by Turkish troops during the 1974 invasion and occupation of Cyprus and never accounted for. When Andrew was taken from the Kassapis home in Cyprus he was 17 years old.

On Thursday, May 14, 1998, Andrew's father, Gus Kassapis, will join His Eminence, Congressional leaders who introduced the Missing in Cyprus Bill, Greek Orthodox clergy from the Washington, D.C. area, as well as over 100 of the most prominent and active Greek- and Cypriot-American leaders and Cypriots from around the world in a procession and a memorial service for Andrew on Capitol Hill.

The procession will begin (on May 14) at 2:15 p.m. in front of the Rayburn House Office Building on Independence Avenue. The group will walk toward and end up at the center steps of the U.S. Capitol Building on the East front. There a short memorial service will take place.

Greek-Americans in the Washington metropolitan area, as well as friends of Greece and Cyprus on Capitol Hill, are urged to participate in this important service. For more information, please contact Mike Manatos at (202) 393-7790.
