EUROPEAN UNION FILM SHOWCASE '97

American Film Institute Theater
Kennedy Center

November 1 - 16

All fifteen member countries of the European Union will be represented in this year's European Union Film Showcase. Greece is again participating with two films by two of its most promising directors, Olga Malea and Nikos Grammatikos. These two critically acclaimed films which have been shown both in Athens and in New York are:

"The Cow's Orgasm"
by Olga Malea
(1977)
Saturday, November 8, 1997, 6:00 p.m.
Monday, November 10, 1997, 6:30 p.m.

This comedy has been a major commercial success in Greece. It was described by "Variety" as "a charmingly daring story" with an "optimistic liberating ending" and has as its subject the coming-of-age of two young girls in the Greek countryside.

"The Truants"
by Nikos Grammatikos
(1996)
Sunday, November 9, 1997, 8:30 p.m.
Monday, November 10, 1997, 8:15 p.m.

The Truants is Nikos Grammatikos' third film. It is the story of the friendship of six young men. Each time they go back to their small island, each carries with him different aspects of the changes going on in contemporary Greece. These changes corrupt their former innocence, loosen their ties, and erase their old ease of communication. The era of collective experiences and shared views has ended. The group scatters into a new era that will be characterized by personal pursuits.
