Mr. George Chryssis, President of the Pan Cretan Association of America will be introducing the speaker. This presentation has particular relevance, as it is soon to be the 75 year anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Mr. Koumakis' trip to the United States is on his own initiative. The purpose of this trip is to speak throughout the U.S. on the writing of his book, which outlines Turkey's policy towards Hellenism (and others) through his own personal experiences, and what history has recorded over the past 100 years. "The Miracle" has received rave reviews from clergy members, such as Archbishop Iakovos of North & South America; Metropolitan Bishop Panteleimon of Thira, Amorgos & Islands; and Archbishop Timotheos of Crete; from politicians such as Constantinos Stephanopoulos, President of the Greek Republic; Dimitris Avramopoulos, Mayor of Athens; journalists, and Greek ambassadors and academics. As stated by Metropolitan Bishop Meletios of Nikopolis, "This is a work written with immense compassion. It is a message, an offering that should become a Gospel for the nation. The book must be read as widely as possible, not only by our generation, but by everyone." "The Miracle" has been distributed to and read by thousands in Greece, and was approved by the Greek Ministry of Education to be distributed to over 8,000 primary school libraries. It has already been translated into English and is due to be printed in German in 1997. Mr. Koumakis' visit is part of a speaking tour throughout the U.S. Mr. Koumakis, a native of Constantinople, was forced to flee with his family as a result of the 1964 riots. After leaving Constantinople, he attained his degree from Athens University Law School. He is currently a successful businessman in Athens. This presentation will be held at M.I.T., 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, in the small amphitheater room 10-250. Parking is available behind Kresge Auditorium. Enter from Massachusetts Avenue. There will be refreshments served, and copies of Mr. Koumakis' book will be available both in Greek and in English. The event is open to the public.
