Modern Greek Studies to Hold Second Annual Hellenic Artists' Exhibit

The Second Annual Hellenic Artists' Exhibit, sponsored by the Modern Greek Studies Foundation at California State University at San Francisco, will again be held at Fort Mason Art Center, Marina Boulevard and Buchanan Street, in Landmark Building A-1 on Friday through Sunday, September 27 to 29.

The exhibit will feature new paintings and sculptures by artists of Hellenic ancestry not previously exhibited. Twenty artists have been invited to participate in the showing under the auspices of the Hellenic International Artists' Foundation (tm).

Noted landscape artist Gregory Kondos will be the Honored Guest at the exhibit.

Mr. Kondos was recently elected to the National Academy of Design and will be featured this fall in a PBS Special Program. Recognized as one of the world's most prominent California landscape artists, he has won numerous prizes and has works in permanent collections of many museums, including the Yosemite Museum, where he has been a member of the Artist-in-Residence Program since 1989. Among his solo exhibitions is a recent retrospective at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. His paintings, drawings and prints have been described by Art Harlow, Director of the Hearst Art Gallery at St.Mary's College, as "a visual feast for those who love landscape art and the unique beauty of California's diverse terrain."

Raised in Sacramento by Greek immigrant parents, Kanela and Steve Kondos, Mr. Kondos studied at Sacramento City College and later received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Art at the California State University at Sacramento.

He taught at Sacramento City College for 27 years and was the founder and director of the campus gallery. With fellow artist and friend, Wayne Thiebaud, Mr. Kondos founded the Artists Cooperative Gallery (now the Artists Contemporary Gallery), one of the earliest showcases for aspiring artists in northern California.

According to Victoria Dalkey, art correspondent for the Sacramento Bee,

" ...it was a trip to Greece, his ancestral home, in 1963, that changed the course of his work
... His protracted observation of the Greek landscape, sitting alone and watching the sun glint off the ruins of Sounion, waiting for changes in the color, profoundly affected his painting. Coming home with suitcases full of drawings, he began to paint what he had seen with the simplicity and clarity that have become hallmarks of his work."
Describing his work, Mr. Kondos said,
"If you look at my work, you will find qualities like quietness and cleanliness, but, above all, you'll find that I'm a loner
... I think it reflects in my work this lonely quality."

Committee members of the Ft. Mason Exhibit are Caterina Peterson, Dr. Thanasis Maskaleris, Dr. Peter Haikalis, Pat Aleck, Ann Condas, Linda Gibbons, Titika Koplos, Violet Nicholas, Catherine Banks, Annette Patsuris and Michael Genung.

Dolly Vasil is honorary chair.

Opening ceremonies and reception will be held on Friday, September 27, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., with entertainment, hors d'oeuvres, dessert and libations. The reception will afford the opportunity meet the Honored Guest, Mr. Kondos, and the featured artists and sculptors. Admission is $35.00.

General viewing, with free admission, will take place from
10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, September 28, and from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 29.

All proceeds will be for the benefit of the Center for Modern Greek Studies at California State University at San Francisco.
