The Hellenic Resources Institute Convenes International
Experts to Explore Educational Reform in Greece

CAMBRIDGE - May 23-24, 1996. The Hellenic Resources Institute is sponsoring a 2-day workshop to be held at the Gutman conference center of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education on "Greek Higher Education: Prospects of Reform." This two-day workshop is the result of over 6-months of work by the Hellenic Resources Institute's HR-Education Project.

The goal of these two days is to bring Greek experts with disparate views on Greek education closer, in order to identify common ground on educational reform in Greece. Additionally, they will benefit from the experience of international education experts on both the issue of national education policy and the conceptual frameworks within current education theory and analysis as we approach the 21st century.

The proceedings of these sessions will be published by the working group of the Hellenic Resources Institute Education Project.

Throughout these two days, participants will present papers on specific topics, and the issues will be discussed in a panel forum. In addition to the Greek Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Honorable George Papandreou the following experts are also members of this workshop: Prof. Spyros Amourgis, California State Polytechnic University; Dr. John Bailey, President of the American College, Athens; Prof. Albert Beaton, Boston College; Prof. Dionysis Bonikos, Provost, The University of Patras; Prof. David Breneman, The University of Virginia; Dr. Alexis Dimaras, Director, The Moraitis School, Athens; Prof. Bruce Fuller, Harvard University; Prof. James Honan, Harvard University; Prof. Andreas Kazamias, University of Wisconsin and University of Athens; Prof. Eva Konstantellou, Hellenic College, Boston; Prof. David Kuechle, Harvard University; Prof. Haris Lambropoulos, University of Patras, Greece; Prof. Noel McGinn, Harvard University; Prof. Judith McLaughlin, Harvard University; Prof. John Panaretos, Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Education; Dr. George Papadopoulos, Former OECD Deputy-Director of Education; Prof. Stephanos Pesmazoglou, Pantion University, Athens; Prof. Julie Reuben, Harvard University.

The topics to be covered over the course of this workshop span a wide range of issues such as "The Politics of Higher Education," "Educational Systems in Transition," "The Greek University in Crisis," and "Greek Higher Education Reform: A Leadership Challenge." There will be two presentations open to the public: Thursday, May 23, 1996 at 1:00 p.m. the Hon. Michael S. Dukakis, Former Governor of Massachusetts will speak on "Higher Education in Massachusetts: The Vision and the Reality." Friday, May 24, 1996 at 6:00 p.m. the proceedings will close with a lecture by the Hon. George Papandreou, Minister of Education, The Hellenic Republic. Both presentations will be held at Longfellow Hall 100, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and are open to the public.

This two-day session has been sponsored by The National Bank of Greece, The Atlantic Bank, NY, the Greek Ministry of Education, Harvard University; The Fried Foundation, The Alpha-Omega Council, Mr. M. Gianakakos, Dr. G. Hatsopoulos and the Hellenic Resources Institute.

The Hellenic Resources Institute was founded by a group of young Greek academics and professionals in May, 1993. HRI is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has offices in New York City, NY and Athens, Greece. It is an independent, non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization whose goal is to create a link between the Greek public policy maker and academics, professionals, entrepreneurs and scientists of the Greek diaspora and the international community. At the moment, HRI is the only non-profit organization solely dedicated to mobilizing a broad base of knowledge and expertise for the benefit of public policy making in Greece.
