CALL FOR PAPERS

EUROCONFERENCE Democracy Beyond the Nation-State: Perspectives on a Post-National Order

Athens, Greece Thursday 5 - Saturday 7 October 2000

Supported by the European Commission, Research DG, Human Potential Programme High-Level Scientific Conferences (HPCF-CT-1999-00168)

The Hellenic Political Science Assocation (HPSA) will host the second EuroConference of the cycle «Politics and the State: Prospects for Democracy in Contemporary Europe», entitled «Democracy Beyond the Nation-State: Perspectives on a Post-national Order». The organisers invite academics to submit proposals to be delivered at the conference. Contributions from young researchers and doctoral students will be welcomed. HPSA would also like to encourage the active participation of colleagues from other Balkan countries.

Paper proposals (up to 500 words) should address questions falling into the thematic units and/or area studies listed below. It is expected that panels will be enhanced by interdisciplinary contributions and comparative case-studies.

- National and European citizenship: dilemmas of integration - Redefining the international legal order: sovereignty and beyond - Multiculturalism and the nation-state. «International» multiculturalism? - Universal human rights and national sovereignty - The Balkans and European integration - The new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe - The EU and the USA - Russia and China in the international community

A number of grants for travel and accommodation are available. Since paper proposals are reviewed anonymously, the author?s name, affiliation and address should be separate from the text. Please note that participants requesting subsidies should also attach a budget, indicating -if applicable- the amount to be raised by other sources.

Proposals (3 copies) should reach the EuroConference secretariat by 31 March 2000. Deadline for submission of accepted papers: 15 June 2000. Venue: Sakis Karagiorgas Hall, Panteion University, Athens
