PANGALOS, HOLBROOKE AND DUKAKIS TOP LIST OF KEY PARTICIPANTS IN 14TH ANNUAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos, President Bill Clinton's Special Emissary for Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke, and former nominee for President of the United States, Michael Dukakis, are some of those key people participating in next week's 14th Annual Hellenic Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, September 23 - Friday, September 25, 1998). A major, renewed U.S.-led peace initiative centered on Cyprus and the Aegean is the focus of these meetings next week between America's top policy-makers and Hellenic leaders from across the country and around the world.

On Wednesday, September 23 conference participants will hold a strategy session and a working dinner with Foreign Minister Pangalos. Many of the major Greek-American organizations as well as world Greek and Cypriot organizations will be represented in these meetings by their leaders.

On Thursday, September 24, participants will spend most of the day on Capitol Hill meeting with committee and subcommittee chairmen and other key policy-makers in the U.S. Congress. In the U.S. Senate, participants will meet with, among others: the chairman and top Democrat on the European Affairs Subcommittee, Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE), respectively, as well as Greek-American Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) (of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) and Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) (of the Senate Armed Services Committee).

In the House of Representatives, some of those with whom participants will meet include: House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-MO); the chairman and next ranking Democrat of the House International Relations Committee, Congressmen Ben Gilman (R-NY) and Sam Gejdenson (D-CT), respectively; the chairman and ranking Democrat of the House Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, Congressman Sonny Callahan (R-AL) and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), respectively; the former chairman and current ranking Democrat of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Congressman David Obey (D-WI); as well as Greek-American Congressmen Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) (co-chair of the Hellenic Caucus) and Mike Pappas (R-NJ) (of the House National Security Committee).

Participants will also be meeting with Ambassador Holbrooke and Special Cyprus Coordinator Thomas Miller for over an hour in the White House complex. The Frizis Award, presented each year to a member of the Jewish community who has greatly contributed to important Hellenic issues, will be presented to Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Livanos Award will be presented to former Governor Michael Dukakis.

Those interested in participating in this conference should call the office of the conference coordinators, Manatos & Manatos, to register at (202) 393-7790.
