  • [01] TACKLING UNEMPLOYMENT IS THE MAIN GOAL

    Athens, 20 February 2006 (13:02 UTC+2)

Tackling unemployment and dealing with the everyday problems of the Greek people remains the main goal, stated Minister of Employment and Social Protection Savvas Tsitouridis after the meeting he had with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis to discuss issues concerning the ministry.

The Minister of Employment stated that there is a need for broad consultations and understanding. Responding to the question if he supports the Greek General Confederation of Labor (GSEE), he said that it is not necessary to agree on everything in this country but a need to reach an understanding.

Responding to the question if the government fears social tensions and strike mobilizations, he stated that the government does not fear because everyone has a great sense of responsibility.

Yesterday, Mr. Tsitouridis sent a clear message to the Federation of Greek Industries (SEV) and the bankers. We appeal to everybody in order to tell them that the room for understanding is not exhausted yet. Those who were well-off in previous years will have to contribute more and make more sacrifices. And, of course, these are not the workers, said the Minister of Employment.

[02] TENSION IN THE SEAPORTS BECAUSE OF THE STRIKE

    Athens, 20 February 2006 (13:31 UTC+2)

The Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) decided yesterday to continue the strike of the Greek sailors until the early morning hours of Wednesday insisting that all its demands be met.

Hundreds of trucks with perishable goods destined for the Aegean islands, Crete and the Dodecanese islands are stuck in the country's seaports because of the strike.

[03] RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CONGRATULATES GREEK COUNTERPART

    Athens, 20 February 2006 (16:59 UTC+2)

Russian ambassador to Athens Andrei Vdovin delivered a congratulatory letter by Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to newly appointed Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis.

The visit was a ceremonial one and was held at the request of the Russian diplomat.

[04] ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY - CUBAN UNIVERSITIES COOPERATION

    Thessaloniki, 20 February 2006 (16:01 UTC+2)

Thessaloniki's Aristotle University and Cuban universities inaugurate cooperation in the areas of science and education and particularly in the sectors of fine arts, energy, management, environment, biotechnology, computer science and medicine.

Cuban ambassador to Athens Hermes Herrera Hernandez and Aristotle University deputy dean Ekaterini Douka Kampitoglou, responsible for academic affairs and personnel, discussed the details of the cooperation in a meeting they had today.

We give a special emphasis on Greek-Cuban cooperation, particularly in the sector of university education, said the Cuban ambassador, adding that the Greek civilization is greatly appreciated in Cuba and the Greek History is being taught in schools.

The Greek-Cuban relations were the main topic discussed in the visits made by the Cuban ambassador to the Prefecture, the City Hall and the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki. The cooperation and solidarity atmosphere existing between the two peoples was confirmed in all the meetings held by the Cuban ambassador.

Greek-Cuban Association president Fotis Georgiadis told ANA-MPA that the contacts made by the ambassador are placed within the framework of the preparations for the events organized each year by the Greek-Cuban Association on the occasion of the anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The events will take place in Thessaloniki on May 15-20.
