[01] ENTHRONEMENT OF THEOPHILOS

The enthronement ceremony of the new Patriarch Theophilos I of Jerusalem takes place in Jerusalem in the presence of Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmud Abas, while also present is a representative of the King of Jordan and Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece.

Mr. Papoulias will have a private meeting with Theophilos and afterwards he will meet with his Israeli counterpart who has not recognized yet the Patriarch's election.

The Greek government will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Panagiotis Skandalakis, main opposition Socialist Party PASOK will be represented by its Foreign Affairs and Defense Issues coordinator Michalis Chrisochoidis, while also present will be World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, President Andrew Athens and 13 leaders of different religious dogmas.

Mr. Skandalakis stated to ANA-MPA that the up till now non recognition of the new Patriarch by Israel is no reason for concern. He reminded that the Israeli authorities had recognized the previous Patriarchs after at least 2 or 3 years.

[02] PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES AND SELF-PROTECTION

The Civil Protection General Secretariat called on the public to take all necessary measures for their protection after the Weather Bureau forecast according to which, low temperatures across the country dropping below zero in many parts of northern Greece, as well as storms and gale force winds, will be the weather characteristics until Thursday.

Minister of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization Prokopis Pavlopoulos briefed the Prime Minister on the measures taken on behalf of the state mechanism, while a meeting took place in the Interior Ministry.

[03] BREAST CANCER IS THE 2ND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR GREEK WOMEN

The most frequently detected form of cancer is breast cancer and corresponds to 25% of all cancer types diagnosed among women.

An estimated 1,200 women die each year in Greece from breast cancer which is the second leading cause of death after traffic accidents.

Also, about 3,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year while cancer cases show an annual increase of 3-4%.

The above were mentioned by 3rd Surgery Clinic - Breast Surgery Director in Thessaloniki's Theagenio Hospital Aris Bousoulegas during a presentation of a study on breast cancer. He also pointed out that the specific cancer type cases are likely to double in the next 20 years.

Women are defenseless against this type of cancer due to inadequate information reaching 76%. Being informed and engaging in self-examination of the breasts between the 8th and the 10th day of menstruation beginning from the age of 20 as well as mammography tests after the age of 35 for women belonging to high risk groups and after the age of 40 for the rest of the women can contribute to early detection and cure.

[04] NATO CONFERENCE IN THESSALONIKI

The commanders of forty NATO Training Centers for the Support of Peace are in Thessaloniki to attend their annual conference.

The conference participants come from Austria, Albania, France, Denmark, Greece, United States, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, Finland, etc and they will examine ways to coordinate different education institutes within the framework of NATO.

The conference is held in the Greek Education Center for the Support of Peace in Kilkis, north Greece.

[05] THE SAE LEADERSHIP MET WITH THE PRESIDENT AND THE PRIME MINISTER

World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, President Andrew Athens and the SAE Board met yesterday with Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. Present in the meetings were Deputy Foreign Minister Panagiotis Skandalakis and Special Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Issues of Hellenism Abroad President Evgenios Haitidis.

President Papoulias following an update on SAE's activities and the new Enabling Law prepared by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs praised the work of the world organization and especially the support of the Greeks abroad to the Greek National Issues.

Mr. Papoulias noted that Hellenism abroad is a great power and that maybe all those who say that Hellenes Abroad are much more Hellenes than we are, are right. The President also mentioned that we should solve the important problems of Hellenism Abroad, and especially those related to Education and the Greek Language.

In the meeting with Prime Minister Karamanlis that took place at Megaron Maximou, Mr. Athens and the SAE Board expressed their views on issues regarding SAE's strengthening.

The Prime Minister stressed the fact that the new Enabling Law for SAE is of great importance for the Omogeneia and should be passed now that the long discussion with the wide base of the Omogeneia has been completed. At the same time, the Prime Minister expressed his support to SAE's Medical Program in the Black Sea countries and Albania.

On behalf of the Board, the SAE President thanked Mr. Karamanlis for the excellent cooperation with the Greek government and especially Deputy Foreign Minister Skandalakis, as well as with the Special Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Issues of Hellenism Abroad. Mr. Athens also thanked the Prime Minister for the hospitality programs for Hellenes abroad of all ages and requested their expansion in order to increase the number of participants. The meeting focused on issues of Education and Culture. Within this framework the Prime Minister was informed of the programs run by SAE for the promotion and preservation of the Greek Language in the countries of the former Soviet Union, Africa and Asia, partly implemented in cooperation with the Onassis Foundation.

The SAE Board members participating in the meeting were, SAE Alternate President, Stefanos P. Tamvakis, SAE Vice President, Coordinator for N. & S. America Mr. Chris Tomaras, SAE Vice President, Coordinator for Europe Mr. Angelo Aslanidis, SAE Vice President, Coordinator for Oceania Mr. Kostas Vertzayias, SAE Vice President, Coordinator for Asia-Africa Mr. Vasilis Magdalinos, SAE Treasurer, Mr. Cos Georganas and SAE Secretaries, Mr. Elias Rallis and Ms. Olga Sarantopoulou. Also, present was the President of the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Georgia, Mr. Kyriakos Iordanidis.

[06] WORLD TELEVISION DAY

Government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos stressed the need to assess calmly and responsibly the contribution of television to democracy, communication and cooperation of people, nations and cultures and to the efforts made to face the challenges emerging in the new digital era. Mr. Rousopoulos made the comment on the occasion of the World Television Day yesterday.

These challenges concern the protection of the quality of the system of government, while safeguarding the terms and preconditions for television to fulfill its role provided by the constitution namely, to provide reliable and pluralistic information and quality entertainment unaffected by dependencies and interests, said Mr. Rousopoulos.

[07] THEOPHILOS WAS ENTHRONED PATRIARCH OF JERUSALEM

The enthronement of the new Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos took place in a humble ceremony in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem today held in the presence of Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias, Deputy Foreign Minister Panagiotis Skandalakis, representatives of ruling party of New Democracy and main opposition Socialist Party PASOK, Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece as well as representatives of all Churches and Patriarchates. Also present were representatives of Palestinian and Jordanian authorities.

In his enthronement speech, the new Patriarch referred to the recent ordeal the Patriarchate went through, pointing out the weight of the mission he undertakes.

Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias stated that this is a historic day for the Patriarchate signaling the beginning of a new course. He said that the ceremony was humble and at the same time glorious, reflecting the personality and noble goals of the Patriarch.

He pointed out the role of the Patriarchate characterizing it as a factor of peace and stability in the region and concluded by stressing that Greece will always offer its assistance.

Deputy Foreign Minister Panagiotis Skandalakis stated that with the enthronement ceremony of the Patriarch of Jerusalem a long and difficult period of unsettlement is being closed.

President Papoulias also met with his Israeli counterpart.

Irenaeus, the previous Patriarch of Jerusalem, remains inside his chambers in the Patriarchate and stated today in the newspaper Jerusalem Post that he is the canonical Patriarch and that he remains dedicated to the Holy Sepulcher and Greece. He expressed support to Israel and stressed that all those who brought to the Patriarchal throne the new Patriarch are unlawful, concluding that he did not sell anything.

The Greek delegation returns to Athens later this evening.
