    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis sent a congratulatory letter to Angela Merkel for becoming the new chancellor of Germany.

    In the letter, the Prime Minister refers to the already excellent bilateral relations and to the fact that there is still room for even closer cooperation aimed at further promoting European integration.

    [02] TWO CONCERTS BY a-ha IN ATHENS AND THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 12 October 2005 (18:02 UTC+2)

    Legendary Norwegian pop music band a-ha will give two concerts in Athens and Thessaloniki in their first time ever to appear live in Greece. The trio formed in 1983 and in 1987 they provided the title song for the James Bond film The Living Daylights.

    Some of their hit songs are: Take on Me, The Sun Always Shines on TV, Hunting High and Low, The Living Daylights, Stay on These Roads.

    The a-ha concert in Thessaloniki will take place on November 5 while the Athens concert is scheduled for November 3.

    [03] PAPANDREOU TO VISIT TURKEY

    Athens, 12 October 2005 (17:15 UTC+2)

    Main opposition Socialist Party PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou heading a European Socialist Party high-level advisory team together with former Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Liponen will visit Turkey today and tomorrow, October 12 and 13.

    Today, the advisory team will meet in Istanbul with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew while it will also have meetings with labor union associations and non governmental organizations active in human rights and women's rights issues.

    Later this evening, the delegation will visit Ankara to attend a dinner given by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

    Tomorrow, the delegation will meet with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul while they will also meet with the leaderships of the Socialist Parties CHP and DEHAP.

    The European Socialist Party advisory team will wrap up its visit to Turkey with a presentation of its conclusions in a press conference.

    [04] WORK STOPPAGE IN THE GREEK MASS MEDIA

    Thessaloniki, 12 October 2005 (16:56 UTC+2)

    A four-hour work stoppage was held in all the Greek mass media today within the framework of the mobilizations organized by the Greek Federation of Journalists' Associations.

    The work stoppage was held from 12 pm until 4 pm this afternoon with the participation of all journalists in newspapers, radio and television stations and news agencies to promote the sector's demands.
