    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, who is already in Thessaloniki, inaugurates the 70th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair at 8 pm this evening with a speech to be delivered at Ioannis Vellidis Conference Center.

    Mr. Karamanlis visited this morning the Science Center, the Museum of Technology and the National Center of Research and Technological Development where he stressed that the goal is to make Thessaloniki a center of attraction for scientists.

    Mr. Karamanlis will also visit the Music Megaron Building where he will inspect the construction site of the second building of the Music Megaron complex.

    Tomorrow morning, Mr. Karamanlis will visit the ITF grounds and later at noon he will preside over a meeting with the participation of local production forces representatives, while in the evening he will present the government economic policy priorities in the dinner to be given in his honor by the International Trade Fair management.

    [02] PUTIN: MOUNT ATHOS IS A SPECIAL PLACE FOR THE CHRISTIAN WORLD

    The leadership of the monastic community of Mount Athos reserved a royal reception for Russian President Vladimir Putin today when he visited Karyes, the capital of the monastic community in Chalkidiki, northern Greece.

    In the main square of Karyes, Mr. Putin was received by head of the holy assembly Pavlos and together they walked toward the Protatos church entrance where the Russian President was awaited by the Priors of the Athos monasteries, the representatives of the monasteries in the holy community and the members of the Ecumenical Patriarchate exarchate.

    President Putin after greeting the monks one by one entered the church and lit a candle, worshiped the Axion Esti icon and attended a doxology.

    The Russian President characterized Mount Athos as a special place for the Christian Orthodox people and the Christians in general and referred to the respect this place enjoys in Russia.

    Later in the afternoon, Mr. Putin was scheduled to visit the Panteleimon Monastery, a Russian-Orthodox monastery with Russian and Ukrainian monks.

    [03] PRESIDENT PAPOULIAS MET WITH THE ARCHBISHOP OF TIRANA

    Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias had a friendly meeting with Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana at the Presidential Building today.

    Greek-Albanian friendship issues and issues concerning the Christian Orthodox Church in Albania dominated in the talks the two men had.

    The Archbishop of Tirana characterized President Papoulias as an architect of the Greek-Albanian friendship who laid its foundations by dissolving the clouds of initial distrust.

    On his part, President Papoulias underscored the Archbishop's efforts, stressing that he has contributed greatly to today's good Greek-Albanian relations.

    [04] FYROM EXPORTS SHOULD BE LABELED AS SUCH

    The products exported by FYROM must bear the label product of FYROM, according to a European Commission decision.

    European Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs, responsible for Taxation and Customs Union issues, responding to a relevant question by Greek Euro-deputy Panagiotis Beglitis stressed that the export products from the country in question must bear the internationally recognized name FYROM and not the country's constitutional name.

    [05] FOREIGN MINISTRY AND ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY SIGNED CONTRACT ON ROAD AXIS 10

    Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stilianidis and Aristotle University rector Yiannis Antonopoulos signed a contract in Thessaloniki today for the speedier promotion of the pan-European road axis 10. It is the first purely practical step made toward the materialization of this ambitious project that will link the city's sea port with Belgrade and central Europe.

    Based on the 18-month, 183,260-euro contract, Thessaloniki's Aristotle University will evaluate the technical reports on road axis 10 which the Serb side has pledged to submit by the end of 2005 before the necessary projects are assigned to contractors.

    The part of the road axis linking Thessaloniki with Belgrade is 210kms-long and will be constructed based on Egnatia Odos motorway standards. The construction budget is estimated at 300 million euros and the Greek contribution is estimated at 100 million euros. If everything runs on schedule then the 210 kms part of the road axis could be ready as early as 2010, said Mr. Stilianidis.

    The issue of the pan-European road axis 10 will be under discussion tomorrow in the meeting Mr. Stilianidis will have with the Serb Minister of Finance on the grounds of the 70th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair.

    [06] LEADING SCIENTISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD MEET IN NYMPHEO

    Leading scientists representing advanced sectors of technology, like New Mathematics and biomedicine, will hold a three-day meeting in Nympheo, Florina northwestern Greece beginning today.

    Eighty world-famous leading university professors and researchers participate in the international meeting.

    The event was organized by the University of Ioannina in cooperation with the Universities of Western Macedonia, Patras and Cambridge, as well as National Metsovio Polytechnic School, the Greek Open University and the Institute of Chemical Engineering and High Temperatures. The scientific conference takes place in English and is dedicated to the late professor Stelios Orphanoudakis.

    [07] PRIME MINISTER KARAMANLIS VISITED THE INNOVATION ZONE

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, who visited the National Center of Research and Technological Development, EKETA, the Sciences Center and the Museum of Technology (Planetarium), stressed that the government supports the development of the eastern Thessaloniki Innovation Zone, based in the region of Thermi.

    Mr. Karamanlis, who is in Thessaloniki on the occasion of the 70th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, visited the EKETA laboratories and was briefed on the activities, achievements and future of its institutions as well as on the incubator of businesses which is under development in the region.

    The Prime Minister pointed out that these institutions, the wider Innovation Zone and, of course, the founding and operation of the International University are very important steps toward meeting the goal of making the region of Thessaloniki a center of attraction for southeastern European scientists and, at the same time, a region for new businesses in the sector of new technologies.

    [08] ANA AND MPA TO BROADCAST ITF EVENTS VIA INTERNET

    The most important events held within the framework of the 70th Thessaloniki International Trade Fair will be broadcast live via Internet by the two national news agencies, Athens News Agency and Macedonian Press Agency.

    This endeavor undertaken by the two news agencies will enable Internet users to watch live all major events to take place during this year's ITF.

    The events to be broadcast are:

    -The 70th ITF inauguration ceremony and the Prime Minister's speech on Friday, September 09, 2005 at 20:00.

    -The Prime Minister's speech in the formal dinner given by the HELEXPO-ITF on Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 20:00.

    -The Prime Minister's press conference on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at 13:00.

    -The visit of Coalition President Alekos Alavanos to the ITF on Tuesday, September 13, 2005.

    -The visit of Communist Party General Secretary Aleka Papariga to the ITF on Wednesday, September 14, 2005.

    -The speech of main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou at the HELEXPO-ITF dinner on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 20:30.

    -The press conference of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou on Sunday, September 18, 2005.
