[06] A "DESCENDANT" OF THE HIPPOCRATES SYCAMORE TREE IN AUSTRALIA

    Melbourne, 1 September 2005 (15:20 UTC+2)

The University of Sydney School of Rural Health, based in the city of Dubbo in western New South Wales, Australia, announced that it was able to get a "descendant" of the sycamore tree under which Hippocrates, the "Father of Medicine", used to teach and practice the art of medicine in the Aegean island of Cos.

The school's program coordinator assoc. professor Bruce Harris stated that with the intervention of Greek-Australian doctor John Bulas the university managed to get an offset of a "descendant" of the historic plane tree.

The symbolic planting of the tree at the school's gardens will take place on September 9 by former deputy prime minister in the commonwealth government John Anderson in the presence of the consul general, other dignitaries and members of the Greek community in Dubbo. The Hippocratic Oath will be read in English and Greek before the sycamore tree is planted.

The Australian academician stated characteristically that with the planting of the tree both the School of Rural Health and the study of medicine will grow roots in western New South Wales because very soon the school's students will study the principles of medicine under the branches of essentially the same tree under which Hippocrates himself was teaching medicine.
