[01] IN DEPTH INVESTIGATIONAthens, 18 August 2005 (12:47 UTC+2)Cypriot Republic President Tassos Papadopoulos stated that foreign specialists will be called if necessary to reach a conclusion on the level of procedures and security measures taken. He made the statement after the meeting he had in Athens with Minister of Interior Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Minister of Transportation Michalis Liapis and Civil Protection General Secretary Panagiotis Fourlas on the Cypriot airline Helios Airways passenger plane crash near Athens last Sunday that caused the death of all 121 people on board. The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation confirmed that all inspection procedures were fully implemented on the specific flight. If the airplane did not have the necessary approval it would not be allowed by the organization's member states to use their airspace at an altitude greater than 29,000 ft, stated the Cypriot Civil Aviation. Olympic Airlines denied it had any cooperation with Helios Airways. Meanwhile, the coroner's office continues the autopsies on the air crash victims. DNA samples are expected in Athens from the relatives of the unidentified victims. [02] CONSULTATIONS BEFORE THE EU STANCEAthens, 18 August 2005 (13:01 UTC+2)Cypriot Republic President Tassos Papadopoulos is in Athens for consultations aimed at coordinating the stance of Athens and Nicosia in view of the discussion in the EU permanent representatives' council on the Turkish refusal to recognize the Cypriot Republic. Cypriot Foreign Minister Giorgos Iakovou stated that there is continuous and regular cooperation between Athens and Nicosia. [03] LAST GOODBYE TO VICKY MOSCHOLIOUAthens, 18 August 2005 (13:35 UTC+2)People in Greece bid farewell to popular singer Vicky Moscholiou whose funeral will be held today. Her body lay in state yesterday and her funeral will be held at public expense. Vicky Moscholiou, who suffered from cancer, died in an Athens private hospital where she was hospitalized since June 25. She started her career in the early 60s and worked with leading music composers. [04] KARAMANLIS-PAPADOPOULOS MEETINGAthens, 18 August 2005 (17:45 UTC+2)Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos met in Athens today with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. The date of the meeting was announced 10 days ago and was held to examine developments in the Cyprus issue and define the future actions by Greece and Cyprus concerning the issue that arose after Turkey's refusal to recognize the Cyprus Republic. Mr. Karamanlis stated that they coordinated the next steps and actions. The Cypriot President stated regarding developments in Cyprus that both countries have defined the tactic and strategy they will follow. Also, Mr. Karamanlis expressed the grief of the Greek people for the tragic accident and stressed that the government wants the causes of the accident to be found. Mr. Papadopoulos stated that additional actions aimed at speeding up investigation have been decided mainly concerning the identification of the victims and the investigation on what caused the accident. [05] GREEK STUDIES PROGRAM IN THE CHINESE ARMYThessaloniki, 18 August 2005 (15:41 UTC+2)A Greek Studies Program is operating since the beginning of 2004 in the People's Liberation Army of China Foreign Language University with the economic support of the Greek Ministry of Defense. The initiative belongs to Chinese Hellenist Shiu Khai, also known as the Greek of Shanghai, who teaches passionately the Greek language and civilization to the Chinese. A total of twenty Chinese army officers have enrolled in the Greek Studies Department Thucydides. In statements she made to the Melbourne newspaper Neos Kosmos, Shiu Khai stressed that the army officers attending the courses are destined to hold top ranking positions in the Chinese army and aspire to visit Greece to practice the language.
