  • [01] NORTH WINDS ARE COMING

    Thessaloniki, 4 August 2005 (12:57 UTC+2)

Temperature is expected to drop today and therefore, the unpleasant weather conditions of the past few days, as a result of the high temperatures that rose to 40 degrees Celsius, will improve.

According to the weather forecast, heavy rains are expected in the Greek mainland today accompanied by a temperature drop and strong gusty north winds.

The extreme heat resulted to a record high electricity consumption breaking last Tuesday's record of 9,510 megawatt.

The Public Electricity Company, DEH, called on the people to cut electricity consumption between 11am and 3pm mainly by not using many home appliances simultaneously.

[02] GREECE IS AN ABSOLUTELY SAFE DESTINATION

    Athens, 4 August 2005 (13:13 UTC+2)

Greece is an absolutely safe destination, stressed Minister of Public Order Giorgos Voulgarakis in an interview with the New York Greek-American daily Ethnikos Kirikas.

Mr. Voulgarakis stated that Greece is not a target of international terrorism a fact confirmed by all relevant studies, and pointed out that Greece occupies one of the last positions regarding the risk of being attacked by terrorists. However, he clarified that this does not mean anything because there is no logic in terrorism.

He said that terrorist action has no borders and affects the entire world either directly or indirectly.

Mr. Voulgarakis underlined that Greece makes use of all security systems and experience it acquired during the Athens Olympic Games last year and cooperates with the United States and other countries in the effort to combat terrorism.

[03] THE PATRIARCH OF ALEXANDRIA IN AMORGOS AND CRETE

    Amorgos, 4 August 2005 (13:45 UTC+2)

Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa visited the Aegean island of Amorgos on July 25 and was received by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece, Metropolitan Bishop Epifanios of Thera, Amorgos, and Islands, the mayor of Amorgos, local authorities and a large crowd.

On July 28, the Patriarch and his entourage arrived in Iraklion, Crete, his birthplace, on board a Greek Navy warship.

Patriarch Theodoros will stay in Iraklion and in the next few days will visit Chania, Rethimno, Spili and Kisamos accepting the invitations of the local Metropolitan Bishops.

[04] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 4.8 BETWEEN EVIA AND SKIATHOS

    Thessaloniki, 4 August 2005 (13:28 UTC+2)

The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale that was recorded at 8:47am today between northern Evia and the island of Skiathos central Greece, 120 kilometers north of Athens and 180 kilometers south of Thessaloniki, was characterized as an isolated incident by Thessaloniki's Aristotle University Geophysics Laboratory seismologist Dimitris Panagiotopoulos.

He added that the tremor is not alarming and stressed that seismologists will wait and see how the phenomenon develops in the next 24 hours.

The tremor was also felt in Athens.
