    Ruling party of New Democracy has a lead of 2.4 points over main opposition party of PASOK, compared to 1.5 last April, according to an opinion poll conducted by Metron Analysis polling company on June 16-27.

    New Democracy got 36.1%, PASOK 33.7%, the Communist Party 7.6%, Coalition 4.3% and LAOS 4%.

    In an opinion poll conducted by the same polling company in April, New Democracy had 36.1% followed by PASOK with 34.7%

    Costas Karamanlis is still regarded as most fit for the post of the Prime Minister with 41.9% compared to Giorgos Papandreou with 27.9%.

    [02] ALL SIX DEFENDANTS IN THE ELA CASE WERE ACQUITTED

    The six defendants in the Revolutionary People's Struggle, ELA, terrorist group case were found innocent by an Athens court today. The court ruled on the second case involving ELA concerning 10 bomb attacks on public service organizations.

    The judges unanimously acquitted Yiannis Serifis who was accused of killing police deputy director Apostolos Vellios in Perissos and lifted permanently all charges against him concerning his participation in ELA.

    Michalis Kassimis was unanimously acquitted and the judges ruled on the remaining four defendants that the evidence was not enough to prove that they actually committed the acts they were accused of.

    [03] HEATWAVE TEMPERATURES IN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 1 July 2005 (13:42 UTC+2)

    The very high temperatures will be the main weather characteristic today reaching 39 degrees centigrade in certain parts of the Greek mainland.

    In Thessaloniki, temperature will be between 22 and 36 degrees Celsius while cooler temperatures are expected on Sunday.

    The Civil Protection General Secretariat warns that sensitive groups of population like the elderly, children and people with health problems should avoid sun exposure during the hot hours of the day.
