  • [01] GILBERTO GIL TO GIVE TWO CONCERTS IN GREECE

    Famous composer and Culture Minister of Brazil Gilberto Gil will give two concerts in Thessaloniki and Athens, on July 19 and 20 respectively, within the framework of his European tour.

    The Greek audience had the opportunity to listen to exotic rhythms, reggae, rock and samba as well as, his own hits and remakes of popular songs in the artist's concert last year in Athens.

    Gil is the most famous representative and ambassador of the Brazilian music scene and together with Caetano Veloso they created tropicalia or the tropicalissimo musical movement that mixed rock with Brazilian music.

    [02] EXAMINER ANTONIA ILIA NO LONGER A MEMBER OF THE JUDICIARY

    The Supreme Court plenary session ruled today in favor of the dismissal of former examiner Antonia Ilia on the grounds of professional inadequacy and found her guilty of unethical conduct.

    The Supreme Court also ruled that the former examiner will not be allowed to work for any public agency.

    Mrs. Ilia characterized the process as void and left the court accompanied by her lawyer and former Euro-deputy Yiannis Stamoulis.

    [03] THE GREEK NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM WANTS A VICTORY

    Thessaloniki, 22 June 2005 (16:03 UTC+2)

    The Greek national football team will try to show its good face today in its third, and without interest, game against the national football team of Mexico in the first phase of the Confederations Cup.

    The Greek team has suffered a second defeat during the event in the game with Japan and was unable to qualify to the next phase, while Mexico managed to qualify after a second unexpected victory over Brazil and in the semifinals will play against Argentina, which occupied the second place in the other group of national football teams.

    Greek national football team coach Otto Rehhagel has offered full support to his players.

    Germany which occupies the top place in the other group will face Brazil in case Japan is defeated this evening by the world champions.

    [04] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 4.8 NEAR ZAKYNTHOS

    A weak tremor of 4.8 magnitude was recorded 280 km southwest of Athens.

    Seismologists located the quake's epicenter at the sea region southwest of the Ionian Sea island of Zakynthos.

    Banks in Greece will remain closed until the end of the week given the fact that the bank employees' labor union, OTOE, has announced a strike today and tomorrow, while the General Confederation of Labor Unions and the public employees unions will hold a 24-hour strike on Friday demanding the withdrawal of the clauses concerning the bank employees' social security.

    Minister of Finance Giorgos Alogoskoufis stated that the solution offered by the government is a balanced one, while on the bank employees' strike action he stated that the government has made all efforts for an effective dialogue that lasted six months.

    [06] GLOBAL CONCERN

    The average unleaded gasoline price in Greece remains over the 90 cents mark a litre, while international oil prices are on the rise already at the highest point of all times being close to 60 dollars a barrel.

    The Ministry of Development has taken all necessary measures to ensure that market will operate smoothly, stated ministry officials commenting on information that in certain cases unleaded is sold as high as 1 euro per litre.

    Deputy Minister of Development Giorgos Salagoudis denied information that starting next fall the special sales tax will be adjusted to the European framework.
