    The governmental committee decides today on the final settlements concerning the bank employees' auxiliary social security fund, while the bank strike mobilization continues today for a sixth day with main demand the establishment of a single social security fund.

    The government maintains that the banks must undertake the funding and the state's contribution to the fund should be limited to the percentage corresponding to it in the state-run credit institutions.

    Minister of Finance Giorgos Alogoskoufis stated that the banks themselves exclusively will fund the new auxiliary fund and therefore, there is no issue of unfair competition and no complications with the EU.

    The structural changes hurt for a second time in a few weeks the government's profile, stated Evangelos Venizelos head of main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK Political Council Employment, Social Affairs and Health Sector.

    [02] PRESIDENT PAPOULIAS MET WITH HIS AUSTRIAN COUNTERPART

    Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias met with his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer within the framework of his visit to Vienna.

    They concluded, among others, that after the French and the Dutch No to the European Constitution Europe has to overcome the crisis.

    Mr. Fischer stressed that both countries believe that the Constitutional Treaty includes many points that will assist to the further development of Europe.

    President Papoulias reiterated the Greek positions on Turkey's EU accession. He said that it is up to Turkey itself to accept the EU principles and make the necessary domestic reforms.

    Mr. Papoulias also met with the Austrian Chancellor.

    [03] NEW POLITICAL PARTY IN CONGO ANNOUNCED IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, 14 June 2005 (14:16 UTC+2)

    A lawyer from Congo, who lives in Thessaloniki and has the Greek nationality, has founded a political party in Congo under the name Nouveau Congo and will run in the first free elections to take place in the country after 40 years of civil war and a military dictatorship.

    Antuan Muzela Kutentakana, 47, who is the party president studied in Congo and then at Thessaloniki's Aristotle University Law School and Sorbonne in Paris. In 1996 he got the Greek nationality and now he is a lawyer in Thessaloniki.

    He is the founder and president of the non-governmental organization Friends of Africa and has undertaken humanitarian activities in central African countries. He said that he chose Thessaloniki to found his party for symbolic reasons because democracy was born in Greece.

    He characterized his party as neo-liberal and its goal is the democratization of Congo, stressing that the situation there is dramatic and the country's future is uncertain. He said that Congo is on the list with the poorest countries in the world but in 1960 it was the richest country in Africa. The country was led to disaster as a result of the dictatorship, corruption, irresponsibility and the civil war. He stressed that unemployment in Congo is at 95%, there is no health system or education system and no water supply, electricity, transportation and telecommunications networks.

    [04] EARTHQUAKE OF 4.9 ROCKS SFAKIA IN CRETE

    Sfakia, 14 June 2005 (13:32 UTC+2)

    An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded in the sea region south of the prefecture of Chania in Crete alarming the people living in central and western Crete, south Aegean.

    According to Thessaloniki's Aristotle University Geophysics Laboratory and the Athens Observatory, the earthquake was recorded at 10:31 this morning and its epicenter was 320 km south of Athens at the sea region near the coasts of the province of Sfakia, Crete.

    The tremor was felt in the prefecture of Chania and the neighboring prefectures of Rethymno and Iraklion alarming the local residents. No damages were reported.

    [05] ONE HUNDRED YEARS ARE ENOUGH FOR CARBON DIOXIDE TO DESTROY THE PLANET

    If no serious action is taken, the greenhouse gas emissions could destroy planet Earth in a period of 100 years, stated University of Manchester professor Brian Launder who received an honorary doctor's degree from Thessaloniki's Aristotle University Polytechnic School Mechanical Engineering Department in an event held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the department and the school's 50th anniversary.

    Prof. Launder underlined that a 12% cut in emissions in Britain as provided by the Kyoto Protocol is not enough. He stressed that the goal for the future is to be able to use in Western Europe only 1/4 or 1/5 of the energy that releases carbon dioxide and predicted that the solution for the future will be nuclear energy adding that renewable sources of energy are an option.

    Professor Launder is the Tyndall Center for Climatic Change Research Regional Director since 2000, a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng).

    [06] ND LEADS PASOK BY 4.1 PERCENTAGE POINTS

    Athens, 14 June 2005 (16:19 UTC+2)

    The biannual opinion poll conducted by the polling company MRB shows that the ruling party of New Democracy leads main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK by 4.1 percentage points.

    To the question which party would vote for, 38.9% responded in favor of New Democracy, PASOK received 34.8%, the Communist Party 6.8%, Coalition 3.6% and LAOS 2.9%.

    Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is regarded more fit for the post with 43.9% compared to PASOK leader Giorgos Papandreou who received 34.3%.

    To the question which party would win in the case of elections, New Democracy leads PASOK by 38.1 percentage points with 61% and 22.9% respectively.

    [07] MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT CLASSROOMS INAUGURATED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BUCHAREST

    The renovated classrooms of the University of Bucharest Modern Greek Language and Literature Department are being inaugurated today in the presence of Greece's ambassador to Bucharest Athanasios Dendoulis and University of Bucharest dean Ioan Punzaru.

    The funds for the renovation of the classrooms and the department's technical equipment came from the Greek government.

    The Modern Greek Language and Literature Department in the University of Bucharest is the only one in operation in Romania and contributes to the spread of the Greek culture, while its graduates are being absorbed by the estimated 2,800 Greek companies active in the country which need Greek and Romanian speaking personnel.

    [08] THE 16TH ANNUAL CYPRUS CONFERENCE

    Over 100 Greek-American and Cypriot-American leaders from across the United States and Hellenes from around the world will be participating in the 16th Annual Cyprus Conference in Washington, D.C., June 15-17, 2005. This conference is hosted by PSEKA, SAE, UHAC and CEH.

    Conference participants will again be meeting with the highest-level administration officials in charge of U.S. policy toward Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. Participants will also be meeting with over 30 key U.S. Senators and Members of Congress, who serve on the pertinent committees and subcommittees and others who play a major role in the formulation of these matters.

    [09] GREEK-AUSTRALIAN COUNCIL ANNUAL CONFERENCE

    The Greek-Australians will raise again the issue of the signing of a bilateral inter-state agreement between Greece and Australia after years of negotiations. The issue will be brought again to the attention of Prime Minister John Howard and the responsible government minister during the annual conference of the Greek-Australian Council in Canberra on June 17-20.

    Among the issues to be raised in the meetings the representatives of the Greek-Australian Council will have with government ministers and the leadership of the opposition parties will be the Cyprus issue, the FYROM name, the Aegean, Halki, as well as cultural, education and social issues.
