    Patriarch Irenaeus of Jerusalem was able to return to the throne chamber of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem yesterday, while the Pan-Orthodox Synod of the heads of the Christian Orthodox Churches called by the Ecumenical Patriarch to take place in the Fener, Istanbul on Monday will discuss developments in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

    Police in the Old City of Jerusalem made it clear to Patriarch Irenaeus that if he takes advantage of the fact that he has entered the throne chamber to make changes in the Holy Synod, Israel will declare the act as void and will order police officers to leave his residence. However, Irenaeus refuses to offer a written statement confirming that he will undertake no such action.

    The Ecumenical Patriarch and Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria have called on Mr. Irenaeus to resign.

    Meanwhile, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece meets on Friday to decide who will be the two hierarchs to accompany the Archbishop to the Ecumenical Patriarchate Synod.

    The heads of the Christian Orthodox Churches will be accompanied by two hierarchs. In the Fener Synod will participate the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Georgia, and the Autocephalous Churches of Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Czech-Slovakia and Poland. The Churches that fall under the authority of the Ecumenical Patriachate will not attend the Synod.

    [02] THE 1ST MEETING OF PEOPLE FROM SIATISTA LIVING ABROAD

    The Municipality of Siatista and Urban and Regional Development Society Siatista organize the 1st meeting of people from Siatista who live abroad to take place on August 11-16. The meeting is an effort to strengthen the ties between the people coming from the city of Siatista situated in the Prefecture of Kozani in western Macedonia, northwestern Greece, and the common goal is to benefit the city itself while, on the other hand, offer the opportunity to relatives to meet again after being apart for a few or even many years.

    A one-day conference dedicated to Siatista's past, present and future with speakers people who have ties with Siatista and are distinguished in literature, arts and science, will take place within the framework of the events that coincide with the holiday of August 15. Also, the visitors will be able to visit the city's old mansions and churches.

    Merchants from Siatista amassed great wealth when they became active abroad and especially, in Central Europe and the Danube countries in the 17th and 18th centuries. They never forgot about their birthplace and helped Siatista in every way they could. Many people from Siatista later immigrated to America and Australia looking for a better future. But the love for their homeland never ceased. It was preserved strong and was passed down to their children born in foreign countries.

    [03] THE ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED IN THE KARAMANLIS-BUSH MEETING

    The Greek-US relations, the Cyprus issue, the issue of the relations with FYROM, the Greek-Turkish relations, and Turkey's European course will be the issues under discussion in the meeting of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis with US President George Bush in Washington, stated government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos.

    Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis and Minister of State Thodoris Rousopoulos will accompany the Prime Minister in his visit to the United States.

    [04] ALIVE AND DYNAMIC MUSEUMS

    Visitors will have the opportunity to enter all museums and archaeological sites in Greece for free today on the occasion of the International Museum Day. This year's theme is "Museums: Bridges of Civilizations".

    Minister of Education Marietta Giannakou referred to the challenge to turn the museums into live and dynamic places.

    Maria Damanaki, responsible for education and culture issues in the main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK Political Council, stressed in her message the need to implement a comprehensive museum policy and secure the funds for the museums' promotion in Greece and abroad.

    [05] PUBLIC EMPLOYEES IN GREECE ARE ON STRIKE

    The public sector in Greece is on a 24-hour strike today with demands concerning the collective work contracts.

    In the strike participate the public service employees, as well as government ministries, internal revenue services, municipalities, prefectures and hospitals.

    Teachers held work stoppages, while universities are closed due to the three-day strike of the teaching personnel.

    The air traffic controllers held a 4-hour work stoppage this afternoon.

    The public employees union demands a minimum wage of 1,200 euros.

    [06] THE UNIVERSITY OF KINGSTON APOLOGIZES FOR THE EVENT HELD ON FYROM

    The strong protest by the Macedonian Society of Great Britain to the University of Kingston for using the term Macedonia in an event held for FYROM made the academic institution to apologize.

    Specifically, professor Gwyneth J. Pitt in a letter to the society referring to the event under the title Macedonia Invest 2005 stated that the institution regrets any offence, which may have been given unintentionally.

    For the record, the university removed the presentation of the event from its official site on the Internet after the intervention and the coordinated efforts by the Macedonian Society of Great Britain.

    [07] PATRIARCH IRENAEUS IN THE PAN-ORTHODOX SYNOD

    Jesusalem, 18 May 2005 (14:42 UTC+2)

    Patriarch Irenaeus stated that he is ready to go to the Ecumenical Patriarchate on Monday to attend the Pan-Orthodox Synod on the developments in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Yesterday, Irenaeus was able to enter again the throne chamber in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

    Patriarch Irenaeus denied that he will remove dissident hierarchs, while police in the Old City of Jerusalem has made it clear to him that in case he uses the fact that he was able to re-enter the throne chamber to make changes in the Holy Synod, Israel will declare the action void and police officers will leave his residence.

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria have called on Patriarch Irenaeus to resign.

    The Church of Greece Holy Synod meets on Friday to decide on the two hierarchs who will accompany the Archbishop to the Ecumenical Patriarchate Synod.
