  • [01] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH INTERVENTION

    Jerusalem, 9 May 2005 (13:13 UTC+2)

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has allegedly sent a letter to Patriarch Irenaeus of Jerusalem suggesting to him not to move hastily and call a minority Holy Synod meeting invoking the likelihood of serious consequences to the operation of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Serious incidents were recorded yesterday between hierarchs, supporters of the Patriarch of Jerusalem and Greek police after the information that Irenaeus had sent his own people to the economic department to destroy documents and remove sums of money.

Archimandrite Fotios and a Greek police officer were arrested while carrying bags full of money and tens of authentic letters of procuration.

Patriarch Irenaeus continues to threaten the hierarchs of the Holy Grave with sanctions.

A total of 75 hierarchs and priests have signed the statement denouncing Patriarch Irenaeus, among them, 15 of the 18 Holy Synod hierarchs.

The Jordanian government will decide today whether it supports the Holly Synod Act denouncing Patriarch Irenaeus, while the Palestinian Authority has already stated that it supports the hierarchs who are against Patriarch Irenaeus.

[04] KARAMANLIS: REFORMS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL

    Athens, 9 May 2005 (16:05 UTC+2)

The certainty that the government of New Democracy will meet the major challenge of reforms for the common benefit and for a better future with the support of the people and society, expressed Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis in the statement he made after the cabinet meeting on regional development held today.

He acknowledged that the government has a tough work to do but pointed out that is feasible. The government wants criticism, listens to every proposal that could contribute to the efforts for a better future, and respects the commitments it has undertaken before the Greek people, he said.

Mr. Karamanlis accused the PASOK governments of negligence and stressed that New Democracy has inherited huge secret debts and deficits while he assured that in two years the economic situation for every citizen will improve, while reforms will be promoted with the greatest possible consensus, boldness and prudence with a sense of realism and social sensitivity.

He made a special reference to the issues of regional development and pointed out that among the government's priorities is the drawing up and implementation of a national strategy for regional development.
