[01] FAVORABLE MEASURES

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis will announce a number of favorable measures for wage earners, pensioners and businesses, while special measures will by adopted for regional development. Also, one billion euro projects will be constructed that will change the way the city of Thessaloniki looks and northern Greece in general.

Mr. Karamanlis will announce the measures speaking in the formal opening of Thessaloniki's 69th International Trade Fair.

The decision on the contents of Mr. Karamanlis' address was finalized in the governmental committee meeting yesterday.

After the meeting, Minister of Environment, Land Planning and Public Works Giorgos Souflias referred to the announcements to be made by the Prime Minister stating that Mr. Karamanlis will describe in the most realistic way the state of the economy. Mr. Souflias also stated that the measures to be announced will be implemented in a period of four years.

[02] GREEK MEDICINES TO NORTH OSSETIA

Pharmaceutical aid will be sent to Moscow to help the victims of the tragedy in the North Ossetia city of Beslan. The decision was announced by Deputy Foreign Minister Evripidis Stilianidis and in cooperation with Solidarity, the non-governmental organization of the Church of Greece.

The medicines will depart today on board a C-130 Greek Air Force transport plane and constitute a tangible expression of solidarity to the suffering Russian society on behalf of the Greek government and the Greek people.

[03] THE GREEK NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM IS READY TO FACE TURKEY

The Greek National Football Team is more than ready for this evening's match with Turkey's team in Athens even though defense player Traianos Dellas will be absent again.

Roma's main defense player was unable to train on Monday and Greek team coach Otto Rehhagel will not include him in his plans for this evening's match with Turkey.

The Greek football players are optimistic about the final score just like their Turkish rivals.

[04] THESSALONIKI HAS THE LARGEST AUTOMATED UNDERGROUND PARKING IN EUROPE

The largest automated underground parking in Europe will be open for the visitors of Thessaloniki's 69th International Trade Fair with highly competitive prices, according to the company that constructed the project.

In a press conference today, it was announced that the automated parking area will have a capacity of 1,100 cars and operate on a 24 hour basis seven days a week. The cost for the construction of the whole project, including a Sports Center and a building complex for cultural and other activities, is estimated at 27 million euros.

The new parking area is made up of four underground levels covering a total space of 24,272 square meters. It will operate mainly using a mechanical parking system that will receive, carry, store and deliver the cars to their owners without human intervention through eight elevators at the first level of the parking.

[05] LOSSES IN THE ASE

Losses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index dropped to -1.15% at 2308.47 points, while the volume of transactions was at 134.619 million euros.

Of the stocks trading today, 62 had gains and 200 had losses, while the value of 81 stocks remained unchanged.

[06] THE DRAFT LAW ON SPORTS

The government will proceed with the proposals and amendments it has submitted in Parliament concerning the Greek Olympic Committee and the way the Greek Football Federation board of directors is elected, stated deputy government spokesman Vangelis Antonaros when asked to comment on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the UEFA objections on the issue.

Mr. Antonaros stated that the proposed amendments will change certain clauses that had turned the football federations into closed clubs for the few.

Responding to a relevant question, he said that he does not know if there is a letter by IOC President Jacques Rogge on the specific issue and underlined that the Greek state respects and honors its obligations and functions in an organized manner.
