The need to focus on the future and the UN to maintain as a main priority the reunification of Cyprus, as well as the prospect for the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots to be able to enjoy together the benefits from the EU accession, was underlined by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis in the meeting he had with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York.

In an interview with the US and the Greek mass media at the UN headquarters, Mr. Karamanlis stated that he thanked the UN Secretary General and his assistants for the efforts they made for many months aimed at reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem and at the same time, he stressed the need to focus on the future and not the past.

In an interview with the CNN, Mr. Karamanlis stressed that everything is ready in Greece to host safe Olympic Games. He stated that Greece offers the greatest possible security to everybody and will host the best Olympic Games ever held.

Mr. Karamanlis also attended a reception given in his honor by the Council for Greeks Abroad, SAE, at the hotel of the Greek mission.

Mr. Karamanlis had the opportunity to meet with leading members of the Greek American community and exchange views on issues concerning the Greek Americans.

    [02] KARAMANLIS-ARCHBISHOP DIMITRIOS MEETING

    New York, 19 May 2004 (13:33 UTC+2)

Issues concerning the Greek-Americans, who make up 1/5 of the Greek population, were raised by Archbishop Dimitrios of America in the meeting he had with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis in New York.

Mr. Karamanlis characterized the Church as powerful connecting link between Greece and the Greeks living and working in the United States.

We had the opportunity to exchange thoughts and views concerning the current needs of the Greeks living abroad and Greece in general, stated Archbishop Dimitrios.

The Prime Minister's wife, Natasha, visited Greek-American schools.

    Θεσσαλονίκη, 19 May 2004 (18:34 UTC+2)
