  • [01] SATISFACTION AND DISCONTENT

    Athens, 14 May 2004 (13:23 UTC+2)

The Greek government expressed satisfaction regarding the performance of the security measures, which are being discreetly implemented at the Olympic Games venues. However, it also expressed discontent over the unethical efforts, as they were characterized by Greek government spokesman Thodoris Rousopoulos, made by foreign media representatives in an effort to prove that there are shortcomings in the sector of security.

Minister of Public Order Giorgos Voulgarakis has issued a clear warning to foreign journalists that the Olympic Games security is not a game.

The London Times journalist, who was briefly held by the Greek police together with a photographer after being arrested because they were inside the main Olympic Stadium in Athens without a permit, maintains that she managed to spend two hours inside the Olympic Stadium facilities without being noticed by the special guards.

[02] KARAMANLIS VISITS THE UNITED STATES NEXT WEEK

    Athens, 14 May 2004 (12:55 UTC+2)

The visit of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis to the United States next week is regarded as very important for the course of the Greek-US relations. Among the issues to be discussed during the visit will be the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, the Olympic Games preparations, security and international terrorism as well as the US-Greek cooperation.

Mr. Karamanlis will meet on Tuesday with the UN Secretary General, while on Thursday he will be received by US President Bush at the White House.

Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos stated yesterday that Mr. Karamanlis' intention is to underline the need to keep the prospects open for a solution to the Cyprus problem, stressing that the efforts of the Greek government move toward this direction.

Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis and Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Valinakis will accompany Mr. Karamanlis in his US trip.

Mr. Koumoutsakos stated that among the goals of the Prime Minister's visit to the United States is going to be the strengthening of the traditionally good bilateral relations.

The US political leadership will be briefed on the priorities of the Greek foreign policy as well as on Athens' views and priorities regarding regional, European and international issues.

On the Olympic Games, it will be stressed the progress made in the preparations which have reached the final stage, while a reference will be made to the preparations concerning security. Mr. Karamanlis will also promote bilateral economic relations.

[03] THE SHIP "KERINIA II ELEFTHERIA" SAILED INTO THE PORT OF PIRAEUS

    Athens, 14 May 2004 (19:25 UTC+2)

The ship Kerinia II Eleftheria sailed into the port of Piraeus this afternoon. It is a ship of historic value as its original was built in the 4th century BC. Its crew will deliver the gifts of Cyprus and the islands it has visited along the way to the city of Athens, the host of the 2004 Olympic Games.

The ancient builders of the ship used timber from the Aegean island of Samos to build it and probably they also came from Samos. The ship was sunk in 370BC near the coasts of Kerinia in Cyprus. Andreas Kariolou, a diver from Kerinia, found the ship at the bottom of the sea and the operation for its recovery got underway in 1967 by two US universities, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas.

It was reassembled and now is being kept in Kerinia under the protection of UNICEF. It has a great archaeological and shipbuilding value because it is the only ancient ship that was found and recovered with its cargo intact, namely 404 amphoras from the islands of Rhodes and Samos and from the city of Korinth in central Greece.

In 1984, the Greek institute for the protection of naval heritage in Greece in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas attempted to build a replica of the ancient ship to be able to study the ancient shipbuilding art and shipping. And this way, the ship Kerinia II was built.

Kerinia II has traveled around the world and because of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the expulsion of the people of Kerinia from their city, the ship became a live ambassador making the world aware of the problems of Cyprus and especially, the Turkish occupied Keniria.
