    Athens, 5 January 2004 (12:44 UTC+2)

A week of rapid political developments is beginning today, as on Wednesday Prime Minister and President of PASOK Costas Simitis will announce his initiatives for developments in the leadership of PASOK as well as those for the renewal of Greece's political life, in a message to the people. Victory will be ours in the elections, said Mr. Simitis. A dialogue with the people was promised by Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou. President of New Democracy Costas Karamanlis asked for elections in February, characterizing the possible change of leadership in the governing party as a firework.

Developments in the Cyprus issue, following the letters sent by US President George W. Bush to the Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Costas Simitis and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will be looked into today by the National Council of the Cypriot Republic.
