  • [01] OPENING FOR TRANSPARENCY

    Athens, 22 July 2003 (09:04 UTC+2)

A letter asking all PASOK MPs to state their stock market transactions from 1997 to 2002, was sent by the Prime Minister yesterday, calling them to willingly accept the lifting of privacy and the audit of the data they will submit to the stock market committee. The letter was accompanied by a six page form which must be submitted to the property auditing committee by September 15. The Prime Minister pointed out the efforts to scorn politics, and characterized the statement to be turned in an obligation to the party. The government called ND to do the same. The stock market committee was characterized as unreliable.

    [02] TIME FOR KOUFONTINAS' STATEMENT

    Athens, 22 July 2003 (09:05 UTC+2)

The statements of the 19 individuals charged with the crimes allegedly carried out by members of the 17N terrorist group will begin with the statement of Dimitris Koufontinas. Koufontinas has accepted responsibility for the actions of the organization but will not mention the names of the organization members that participated in each action. There is also a special interest in the defendants who repealed their preliminary testimonies, in which they gave information on the actions they are accused of.

    [03] SKANDALIDIS ON ELECTORAL LAW

    Athens, 22 July 2003 (12:24 UTC+2)

If New Democracy does not consent to the discussion for the change of the electoral law, then it will be put into effect immediately following the upcoming elections, stated Minister of the Interior Costas Scandalidis in statements to Flash radio this morning.

The Minister of the Interior pointed out that the only way the law will be put in effect after 2005, is if it voted for by 2/3 of the Parliament.

Meanwhile, Mr. Scandalidis is beginning a round of meetings with opposition party leaders, in order to brief them on the content of the electoral law. At 2pm tomorrow afternoon, he will meet with the Secretary General of the KKE, Aleka Papariga, in the party offices.

On Thursday, at 1pm, Mr. Scandalidis will meet with the relevant sector head in ND, Vyron Polydoras, in the Ministry of the Presidency. On Friday, at 10:30am, the Minister will meet Dimitris Tsovolas at the offices of DIKKI. Finally, next Monday, Mr. Scandalidis will meet with Nikos Constantopoulos in the offices of the Coalition.

    [04] CERTIFICATE OR DEMOTION

    Athens, 22 July 2003 (12:25 UTC+2)

His categorical reassurance that any FCs that do not submit the necessary documents will not receive certificates for participation in the upcoming championship, was given by professor Giorgos Chatziconstantinou on behalf of the Professional Sports Committee. The deadline has been set for the afternoon of July 23, while from the files that have been submitted so far, it seems that very few of the FCs meet the requirements. All other FCs will automatically be demoted to the 4th division.

[05] NEW ALL DAY SCHOOLS AND APPOINTMENTS

    Athens, 22 July 2003 (09:14 UTC+2)

The functioning of 5,400 all day schools and the appointment of 7,200 full time teachers in primary and secondary education was announced by Minister of Education Petros Efthymiou, after his meeting with the Prime Minister. Mr. Efthymiou announced that in the new school year, English will begin being taught in the third grade, while he categorically denied that there will be any change in the exams' system.
